Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Lodekkas first appeared in service during a period when the passenger-transport industry was enjoying a peak in popularity. Passenger numbers were among their highest ever in the provinces, and most members of society relied on public transport for journeys to and from work or school, or for leisure activities. The Lodekka was supplied only to state-owned transport operators, as a result of sales restrictions imposed on the manufacturer, yet some 5,217 examples were built between 1949 and 1968, making it one of the most familiar British double-deck bus types throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s. This book, which features a huge variety of photographs, including a number of official views which will be of great interest to modellers and enthusiasts alike, recalls a period when Bristol Lodekkas not only formed the mainstay of many provincial bus fleets but also one in which company liveries were closely associated with specific areas of the country. It gives a colourful look at the life and times of the Bristol Lodekka, portraying it in different liveries and locations as it worked the country with a variety of operators. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. As traditional locomotive haulage declined in the UK and many enthusiasts' favourite classes were withdrawn or taken off passenger work, British Rail fans began to broaden their horizons in the 1980s and look at the railway networks of other countries. For many, their first ports of call were the nearer continental European countries, with Germany proving particularly popular as it still featured locomotive haulage over much of its network, even on the smaller branch lines. Ireland also proved popular as their services were almost exclusively loco-hauled. As more enthusiasts traveled abroad and information and number lists became more available, foreign rail holidays became ever more popular, with worldwide favorites including the USA, with its long history of diesel traction and iconic locomotives, and India, with its extensive system and thousands of locomotives. As locomotive haulage declines in the rest of the world, British 'bashers' are becoming ever more adventurous with most countries, even North Korea, regularly featuring organised visits for enthusiasts. Today, British enthusiasts are found participating in their hobby all over the world and this book, featuring over 160 colour photographs, summarises some of the more popular destinations and locomotives that they travel abroad for. 160 colour illustrations As traditional locomotive haulage declined in the UK and many enthusiast's favourite classes were withdrawn or taken off passenger work, British Rail fans began to broaden their horizons in the 1980s and look at the railway networks of other countries Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The changes to rail freight in Wales and the Borders since the 1980s have been dramatic in many ways and have often been a knock-on effect of huge transformations in the industries that the railway serves, most notably, the coal-mining sector. These have led to a railway with a slimmed-down infrastructure and renewed traction and rolling-stock fleets.Until the 1980s, coal was still the lifeblood of many railway lines in South Wales. However, one by one, the pits closed, leaving just a handful of surface operations still active in 2020. The sight and sound of a Class 37 winding its way up a steep-sided valley is now a distant memory. Industrial decline has affected other traffics too, with the loss of the heavy iron ore trains to Llanwern and many other flows. However, Welsh rail freight is far from dead. Class 60-hauled oil and steel trains still ply the South Wales main line, and there have even been small revivals such as cement from Penyffordd.Illustrated with over 150 stunning photographs, many of which are previously unpublished, this volume looks at the changing face of rail freight in Wales and the Borders, detailing the changes in traction, rolling stock and railway infrastructure over four decades. 160 illustrations This volume looks at the changing face of rail freight in Wales and the Borders, detailing the changes in traction, rolling stock and railway infrastructure over four decades. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Merseyside can claim, with some justification, to have provided the transport enthusiast with a greater variety of transport modes than anywhere else in Britain. By the 1950s, with many long-standing scenes about to disappear, photographers began faithfully to record what they saw in colour. It is these images, including road, rail, sea and other modes of transport, that illustrate this nostalgic pictorial portrait of key aspects of the richly varied scene. Taking the reader on a journey from Liverpool and its suburbs to Birkenhead and Wallasey, with one small detour to include views of the remarkable Runcorn Transporter Bridge, this book gives a full-colour view of the historic transport that was part of the Merseyside townscape from the 1950s to the 1970s. The last 15 years have seen many changes in Scotland's rail network, including the replacement of old rolling stock, an explosion of colourful liveries, the opening of routes, the demise of coal trains and a boom in container freight traffic. These changes have led to new electric units ousting the diesels and the introduction of HSTs on services between the Scottish cities. Illustrated with over 180 images, this book details the huge variety of trains, ranging from the everyday to the unusual, that have been seen on Scotland's rails in the last 15 years. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Go-Ahead began life as the Gateshead-based Go-Ahead Northern bus company after the privatisation of the National Bus Company in 1987. Early expansion saw the acquisition of a number of smaller bus operators in the North East. During the 1990s, it entered London, where it rapidly became the largest provider of bus services in the UK capital. It has subsequently acquired operations across England. Rail privatisation has presented another opportunity for the group and it currently operates Govia Thameslink Railway, comprising Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern as well as South Eastern. More recently, it has established an overseas presence and runs buses in Singapore and Dublin along with rail services in Germany and Norway. All of these are franchised operations. The Group continues to believe that public transport is best managed locally and its operating companies all retain local management and identities. Illustrated with over 150 colour illustrations, this book looks at its first 25 years in detail with a brief update of developments since then. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. London Transport was formed in 1933 to bring together all the public transport operations (except national railways) that served the capital, the suburbs and the surrounding countryside. Previously, these had been in the hands of a myriad of operators, some more dependable than others. Containing some 120 colour photographs, including rare images from the postwar period, and detailed captions, this album shows the transition from prewar standards, which initially continued after the Second World War, to the modernisation that was essential to encourage continued use of London's transport systems by the public in the face of increasing car ownership. Rekindling memories of the postwar period, this nostalgic colour portrait looks at London Transport's buses, trolleybuses, trams and underground trains (both surface and tube stock) operating between 1949 and 1974. With a fleet of war-surplus Dakotas, the airline took to the sky. At first, only domestic and regional destinations were served, forcing the airline to build makeshift airstrips. However, in 1957, Douglas DC-6s and a Lockheed Constellation were obtained and flights to Europe commenced. In the 1960s, Ethiopian entered the jet age with the purchase of Boeing 720s, later supplemented with 707s. Despite various political, economic, and social obstacles, Ethiopian Airlines continued to invest and grow, expanding to other African countries and further abroad. As passenger transport has declined, as a result of the global pandemic, it currently utilizes its cargo business to transport medical supplies. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. North Korea is often referred to as the "Hermit Kingdom" and not without reason. However, although tourism to this secretive country is rare, it does happen, albeit with limited numbers. In 2016, North Korea hosted its first ever airshow and invited a number of foreign visitors to watch. Unlike most airshows, this was not an international event, and all participants were from North Korea. There were a selection of aged Soviet-era airliners from the national flag carrier Air Koryo and fighters, helicopters, and light transport aircraft from the air force. None of the military aircraft are ever seen outside North Korea's borders, and even the airline only operates limited international services, making the opportunity to see them in action, and photograph them, a once in a lifetime event. This volume is the personal account of a rare visit to one of the most isolated counties in the world. Not only does the book give a fully illustrated look at North Korea's aircraft, both military and civilian, but it then goes on to give a pictorial look at the country itself from a tourist's point of view. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Multiple units are the unsung heroes of the modern railway system. Although they make up the main form of rolling stock for the majority of rail passenger services operated worldwide, particularly in high-density inner-city and urban traffic, they see much less media coverage than the more popular locomotive types. The many advantages of these units, as opposed to locomotive-hauled trains, include higher capacity, less track damage and lower operating costs, making them an ever more popular choice for modern, cost-conscious railway operators in Great Britain and around the world. Illustrated with more than 180 photographs, this book details the history of the major unit types that have operated on the UK's rail network, beginning with the earliest Victorian-era steam railcars and the first late-Victorian experiments with electric-powered traction, and going right up to the modern hybrid-powered multiple units currently under development. The story is told through a selection of photographs, class details and tables listing the major unit types classified by propulsion method and generation. 180 illustrations This book details the history of the major unit types that have operated on the UK's rail network. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Illustrated with over 180 photographs, this book presents two generations of railway photography of the southwest of Scotland. The two 20-year periods of 1960-80 and 2001-21 were chosen because the former covers the changeover years from steam to diesel, and the latter covers privatization, electrification, a range of very colorful trains and a reawakening of the rail network in the southwest after the downward trend during the last years of BR. The book amply illustrates the lines from Glasgow to Gretna down the Ayrshire and Inverclyde coast to Stranraer, along with the former Glasgow and South Western line through Kilmarnock and Dumfries. In addition, many of the branches and minor routes are also catered for. Exploring the region through the decades, this book is an invaluable source of reference for railway enthusiasts interested in the railways of the southwest of Scotland. AUTHORS: David Cross is the son of the late Derek Cross, who was well known as a great railway photographer. David has had an interesting career in the shipping and container industry and also lived and worked abroad at times in his career and life. He often accompanied his father on railway photographic trips when he was very young and caught the railway bug, which has led to a life long passion for trains and railways. He lives in Essex, where he still pursues his great passion for railways and photography. This volume largely taken from his fathers' work is his latest offering. Stuart has been a railway photographer for over 20 years and currently lives on the west coast of Scotland in Ayrshire. His photo library covers predominantly Scotland and northern England from around the year 2000. His photos appear regularly in monthly magazines, and he has written numerous articles on various subjects, all of which have appeared in the railway press. In addition, his photographs have been used for merchandise and on book covers. His previous book for Key Publishing looked at the railways of Scotland in the past 15 years. The Westland Whirlwind was used in the search and rescue (SAR) role before being replaced by the Westland Sea King. Highly visible in their bright yellow liveries, both these aircraft were often seen around the British coastline. The Westland Wessex was used in support helicopter and SAR roles. The Aerospatiale Puma, used both during combat and relief operations, was introduced to RAF service in 1968 and is still being flown today. The instantly recognisable Boeing Chinook came into service in 1981, just in time to take part in the Falklands War, and is also still being used today. With over 180 black and white and colour photographs, this book, the fifth in a series covering British combat aircraft of the 1970s and '80s, showcases the helicopters used by the RAF and their part in the latter stages of the Cold War. This book is a pictorial compendium of these iconic machines. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. This book follows the history of the Class 50s and their service on the UK's railways. During the mid-1960s, BR was looking to introduce a high-powered diesel loco to improve services on the West Coast Main Line. Although the new Class 47s would have perhaps been the first choice, these were already proving unreliable and suffered regular engine failures. Subsequently, BR opted to lease 50 locomotives from English Electric instead. Initially known as English Electric Type 4s, the locos were purchased outright by BR at the end of the lease and became known as Class 50s. When Class 50s were introduced onto Britain's railways, they were regarded as poor substitutes for the beloved Western Region diesel hydraulics they were sent to replace. However, as time went on, they impressed more and more. In fact, towards the end of their careers, they developed a following not unlike the last days of the hydraulics, with many enthusiasts clamoring to photograph or ride behind them. The interest in the class is still evident to this day, with as many as 18 still surviving in various states of repair. Including over 200 images, this volume shows the class at work around the UK, covering not only the BR era, but also subsequent years. This book looks at this iconic class of train in colourful detail. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The Dassault Super Etendard, which became the Super Etendard Modernise in due course, had a remarkable career. It was a humble aircraft that was often faced with thankless and difficult tasks. There was no excessive power in this aircraft, but simply a remarkable versatility that made it the backbone of French carrier aviation for 40 years. Solid, reliable, well-designed, and adaptable, the Super Etendard was an aircraft that France regularly upgraded, enabling it to maintain its rank with increasingly sophisticated equipment and armaments. It gained notoriety for its role in anti-ship missions flown by Argentinian pilots, but paradoxically, France never used it in combat in this role. On the other hand, the aircraft was extensively used as a bomber in numerous wars, in a variety of places, including Lebanon, Syria, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan. With over 160 images, this book looks at the history of the Super Etendard and the impact it had on aviation. In the mid-1980s, one of British Rail's major customers of heavy block trains, Foster Yeoman, suggested the unusual arrangement of running its services with locomotives owned by them, rather than BR. Disappointment in the Class 56s on its routes led Foster Yeoman to look elsewhere for locomotives. They eventually agreed a deal with the US firm General Motors to provide them with the locos designated as Class 59s. The Class 59s surpassed everyone's expectations and other customers unhappy with the Class 56s decided to purchase the Class 59s as well.
