Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Monograph.it is a unique contemporary magazine that combines monography and review. Each volume follows an original structure, although all devote several pages to the study of architecture. Accompanying these case studies are galleries flush with places, buildings, and landscapes; when combined with detailed studies focusing on cities in evolution, Monograph.it encourages its readers to conceive of urbanisation and landscape as mutually complementary. The aim of this is to provide a comprehensive overview that acknowledges differing development-speeds of architectural productions, across a variety of scales. An ongoing project, this survey will be summarised in 'Researches' (a chapter to be published in the next issue). This will stress the importance of encouraging innovation in students of architecture. Monograph.it acts as a platform for theoretical debate, conducting interviews and hosting essays from big-name figures in the architecture world for example, the woman featured in this issue: Odil Decq. Perhaps this celebrated French architect's most renowned project is the L'Opera Restaurant in Paris, France, whose softly sweeping lines and red and white decor create an atmosphere that is simultaneously majestic and cosy. A breath of fresh air among modern architects bewitched by the strength of a straight line, Decq's constructions are not afraid to be curvaceous. 800 colour Provides a glimpse of the genius behind such renowned constructions as the Parisian L'Opera Restaurant. Working together as a joint architectural and urban design studio, twenty six students from the three UNSW disciplines of architecture, built architecture and interior architecture, a group of twelve Italian students from the host University, IUAV of Venice, and three visiting students from the Future University of Khartoum (Sudan), were engaged in a critical discourse on contemporary problems of the built environment, grounded in the culture of Venice. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Contemporary large scale interventions, leading ongoing transformation processes of world cities, are often related to mobility systems. Developed around the reconversion or the implementation of infrastructural nodes, they deeply impact surrounding areas within a more general rethinking of urban conditions. However, the relation between urbanity and infrastructure appears at least ambiguous. On the one hand mobility flows represent key components and engines for transformations, on the other hand their physical presence progressively disappears from the urban scene itself, subtly declaring a figurative irreconcilability between the two. Starting from this observation the book, as a contribution for the architectural and urban discourse, reflects on the status of a conflicting relation, with a specific focus on the 20th century, retracing paradigmatic design positions to outline in which ways these hidden infrastructures are actually reshaping the contemporary city scape and which are the opportunities in the architectural research. 100 b/w images The book retraces paradigmatic design positions to outline in which ways hidden infrastructures are actually reshaping the contemporary city scape and which are the opportunities in the architectural research. Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. Replete with full-colour photographs, this reference work is as aesthetically cultivated as the architecture it promotes Addresses the complex issue of sustainability through a multitude of lenses, including social, environmental, economic, and aesthetic Sustainability may well determine the future of the human race. However, despite its importance, it often lacks one essential quality for success: seduction. An anthropic place must, as the name suggests, appeal to people. Sustainability has to find its own unique power of seduction if it is to compete with the established charms of the unsustainable city. A capitalistic city revolves around superficial allure. As such, beauty in the urban environment has come, somewhat paradoxically, to be associated with excess and exuberance, surplus production, conspicuous consumption, and waste. The research presented in this book encourages discourse on the importance of aesthetics; an exciting foray into the well-visited topic of sustainable production, viewed through a new lens. Ilaria Di Carlo is an architect, writer and researcher. After graduating with Honors at the Polytechnic of Milan in 2000, she obtained a Master's Degree in Landscape Urbanism at the Architectural Association in London. She has worked for different international offices and was Associate at Skidmore Owings and Merrill, London. 400 colour Addresses the complex issue of sustainability in architecture looking at social, environmental, economic and aesthetic factors. The book is the catalogue of the exhibition 'In Balance - Islands, Taiwan and Sicilia' promoted by Nicola Marinello together with Group.G, and curated by Alessandro Martinelli, Massimiliano Robino and Yen-Wen Fang. The exhibition showcased 9 artists from Taiwan and 8 from Sicily, the work of which elaborates on different aspects of their culture and landscape of reference. By the means of this operation, the exhibition aimed to spark social and cultural exchange between two different island cultures, and to raise a question concerning the island culture as such. Indeed, the exhibition understands island life as a form of resistance against the homogenization of globalisation, a resistance that must be understood in its positive aspects in order to improve and contribute to the life of contemporary societies across the world. 80 colour images The book is the catalogue of the exhibition 'In Balance - Islands, Taiwan and Sicilia' which showcased 9 artists from artists from Taiwan and 8 from Sicily, the work of which elaborates on different aspects of their culture and landscape of reference. From their very origin, gardens have always beared an ideal tension between knowledge and pleasure, resulting in the archetypes of the botanical garden and the garden of pleasure. Botanical Garden was born, specifically, as an actual eristic instrument to order, classify and preserve living beings by means of spatial separation. Even if humanity had underwent a journey of dematerialization of knowledge, still space is the most powerful instrument for the comprehension of reality. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Dacia Maraini is today's most prominent Italian writer. She's won, among others, both Campiello and Strega prizes, which are the most prestigious Italian literature awards. Her books have been translated into 22 languages and some of her bestsellers - such as Storia di Piera [Piera's Story], L'eta del malessere [The Age of Malaise], La lunga vita di Marianna Ucria [The Silent Duchess], Voci [Voices], and Memorie di una ladra [Memories of a Thief] - were turned into successful movies. Writing like Breathing is a unique collection comprising some of her most important works, the majority of which have never been translated into English. The series is divided into four major volumes that are meant to give a full picture of Maraini's production from 1962 to the present: I. Autobiography, novels, short stories and poems; II. Plays; III. Articles; IV. Essays, talks and interviews. Writing like Breathing shows how the finest Italian woman writer alive today has embraced and fought for a vast number of issues: women's rights, abuse of women and children, emigration, discrimination, politics, the Holocaust, among many others. Moreover, this collection of Maraini's autobiographies, novels, short stories, and poems, emphasises the author's long relationship with Japan and the United States, countries to which she has devoted several books and articles, both autobiographical and fictional. Some unpublished manuscripts enrich this unique first volume: two short stories ("A Christmas in the Snow Globe" and "Aylan") and three poems ("At Night", "Rome", "Like Sea Bass Underwater"). The other volumes contain unpublished plays ("Diotima and Socrates," "My Name is Antonino Calderone," "Celia Carli, Ornithologist", and "Lia, Who Thought Herself Antigone"), essays, talks, conversations, and interviews given by the author at American universities. "Writing Like Breathing" is an homage to Dacia Maraini, celebrating a writing career that has spanned over half a century, covering all forms of literature (prose, poetry and drama). Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Facies refers to the ability of architecture to enable, by means of its outward appearance, interaction between the space occupied by the building and the setting within which it is found. Architecture, Gio Ponti argues, is made to be looked at, because through the facades of architecture is a public landscape. The facades are the street walls and a city is made of streets. Restoring the facade to the world of meaning requires shifting the role of the building from object to subject, elevating it beyond the exclusive need to meet a set of requirements. However, architecture, to be recognised as such, shouldn't represent, signify, or symbolise something other than itself, but provide a process generating form that organises and builds its own assumptions within disciplinary autonomy. The world of forms thus refers to the wealth of architectural knowledge from which it draws nourishment and thanks to which it generates new forms. AUTHOR: Francesco Gulinello is Associate Professor of Architectural and Urban Composition in the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna. As the co-ordinator of scientific research programmes and director of research conventions he has curated various exhibitions and participated in numerous national and international design competitions. His projects, published in magazines and catalogues, have also been presented in major international exhibitions. His research mainly investigates the origins of contemporary projects in light of their relationships with figurative culture. His publications include Guillermo Vazquez Consuegra (Faenza Editrice.
