Soft cover. Etat : As New. No Jacket. No creases; unread as-new trade paperback, although with some toning to rear wrap in an inverted "L" pattern, possibly from being shelved next to a much smaller book. Rear wrap also bears a "Mises Institute Conference Student" reduced price tag. Originally copyright 1957 by Yale University Press. The final of his four great works, "Theory and History" remains "by far the most neglected masterwork of Mises," says Professor Rothbard in his preface. "Yet it provides the philosophical backstop and elaboration of the philosophy underlying 'Human Action' . . . while "providing scintillating critiques of such fallacious alternatives as historicism, scientism, and Marxian dialectic materialism." Sections on Value; Determinism and Materialism; Epistemological Problems of History; The Course of History. 384 pp. including index. Reduced from $57.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Single shallow spine crease to this trade paperback, which carries a newspaper library stamping to front page edges and to inside of front wrap. Contains Hans-Hermann Hoppe's important essay "From the Economics of Laissez-Faire to the Ethics of Libertarianism " -- detailing how Rothbard moved beyond his mentor, Von Mises, on the questions of monopoly pricing and the supposed inability of the free market to produce such "public goods" as law and order. Also includes Gary North's amusing 'Why Murray Rothbard Will Never Win the Nobel Prize!" (Rothbard's "ability to communicate the truths of economics to reasonably intelligent non-economists is not the sort of skill which impresses the Nobel Prize Committee members.") Reduced from $17.50. Soft cover. Etat : As New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. As new unread trade paperback. Murray N. Rothbard, "a scholar of extraordinary range, made major contributions in economics, history, political philosophy, and legal theory. He developed and extended the Austrian economics of Ludwig von Mises, in whose seminar he was a main participant for many years. . . . A person examining the books and articles of Murray Rothbard without prior acquaintance with their author could not help wondering whether five or six prolific scholars shared the name 'Murray Rothbard.' Surely one man could not alone be the author of books in so many academic fields as well as hundreds of articles on contemporary politics. Anyone who had met Murray Rothbard, however, would experience no such bafflement at the scope of his immense intellectual productivity. . . . I shall endeavor in what follows to provide a guide to the main lines of Rothbard's thought, through an account of his major books and a number of his articles." 184 pp. including notes and index. Reduced from $55.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. There: You knew he was eventually going to start the title of one of his books with 'Epistemological," didn't you? ("Investigating the origin, nature, methods, and limits of human knowledge.") Originally published in 1933 with a German title sufficient to cause nightmares all by itself: "Grandprobleme der Nationaloconomie: Untersuchungen uber Verfahren, Aufgaben und Inhaklt der Wirtschafts . . ." Well, you get the idea. It's pretty much all about how we determine value -- which seems to involve the supply and utility of a given quantity of some commodity at a given time and place -- a gallon of water in the desert being worth a lot more than at the reservoir. Von Mises begins by refuting previous value theories -- especially the error of figuring the value consists of the amount of time and trouble as well as the initial materials cost that went into making something (which could conceivably make a 1952 Nash Rambler worth more than a 1962 Ferrari), but also correcting to some extent the value theories of the thinkers with whom he probably felt the closest intellectual affinity, Carl Menger and Eugen von Bohm-Bauwerk. Author von Mises -- the giant of modern Austrian economics -- then moves on to the perceived problem of "inconvertible capital" and "The Psychological Basis of the Opposition to Economic Theory," including "The Role of Resentment." A few bangs and scratches to the "near fine" glossy boards, which appear never to have carried a dust jacket. 259 pp. including index. As the SECOND BOOK in this von Mises lot, we add the 128-page, near-fine 1983 trade paperback "Bureaucracy," from the Center for Futures Education in Cedar Falls, Iowa -- unread with no creases but showing some rub to the edges. Originally copyright 1944 Yale University Press. In "Bureaucracy," Professor von Mises "does not condemn bureaucracy as bad, undesirable, or inefficient," the publishers note. "It is the appropriate technique for the conduct of government agencies such as the courts of law, police departments, and the Internal Revenue Service. But in economic production and distribution, the bureaucratic method is an abomination that spells universal ruin and disaster." Includes "The Psychological Consequences of Bureaucratization: The German Youth Movement . . . The selection of the dictator . . . the vanishing of the critical sense." On absolutism vs. the profit motive, and the "supremacy of officialdom" 128 pp. including index. And finally, our THIRD OFFERING in this lot is the 48-page softcover pamphlet "The Historical Setting of the Austrian School of Economics," from The Ludwig von Mises Institute of Auburn University, 1984. Three works by Prof. Ludwig von Mises, combined into a lot to consolidate shipping charge, the lot of three now reduced from $32.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Cover has some light edge and corner wear. ; With a great story, and tremendous literary passion, it chronicles the transformation of America from the age of iron to the age of steel. It covers the period between 1820 and 1870 and its dramatic technology march. The plot concerns an ongoing war between two industrialists, one the hero who is beaten in the first generation and the other who is malevolent but initially wins a first round in the competitive drive. The struggle continues through the second generation, which leads to a titanic battle over whether steel or iron would triumph and why.Garrett does not portray the market as some idealized utopia. We have here the full range of human emotion and motivation at work: arrogance, pride, malice, love, compassion, jealousy, rage, and everything else. What is striking is that all these emotions play themselves out in a setting that is ultimately peaceful. No one can fully control price movements, and it is these that act to reward virtues and punish vices. There has never been, before or since, economic fiction that can compare with this super high quality standards set by Garrett in these smashing novels. The Cinder Buggy could easily be considered the best of his work in this area. It is a wonderful novel for anyone who loves, or wants to more deeply understand, American history, economic theory, and the place of technology in the molding of society. 365 page paperback 2007 ; 6" x 9"; 357 pages.
