Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 217 pp., bibliography, index. How can certainty be achieved; on what issues can an individual possess knowledge beyond doubt? A Finnish mediating theologian A. F. Granfelt (1815-1892) attempted to answer these questions in his theology. This study outlines Granfelt's approach, according to which the use of reason is a duty given to mankind in order to increase knowledge. Truth is reached, however, only through proper self-consciousness; and this, described as conscience, is the key notion of his theory.

The theology of Martin Luther, particularly on baptism, has inspired Huovinen since the late 1970s. Unity between the Churches and among Christians has remained close to his heart from his years as a student in the early 1960s. St Augustine s thought, icrede ut intelligas/i, has guided Huovinen s theological deliberations thus far.

The study shows how the CCIA (the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs) was created and how it established itself as an agency of its parent bodies in the context of the political polarisation of the world in the early Cold War era. The study spans the years 1945 to 1949, from the end of the Second World War to the early stages of the Cold War. It introduces a significant factor almost wholly ignored in the history of the ecumenical movement and its relations to the United Nations: the major contribution of the CCIA in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

The fundamental social and political changes of the 1960 also set a test for the World Council of Churches (WCC), the foremost organization of the modern ecumenical movement. This study concentrates on the WCCs answer to the worldwide call for social justice, the Programme to Combat Racism (PCR), and the Programmes reception during its initial stages. The PCR marked a turning point in the history of the WCC. It signalled a clear change from the WCCs prior tendency of issuing general statements of agreement to engaging in controversial action. Inter-church cooperation was closely connected with the social discourse of the time, and thus Cold War tensions were also evident in the discussion on the PCR.

This study examines the ecumenical dialogue between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland from the start of their exchange during the Cold War in 1970 up to 2008, when social ethics had become the main topic under discussion. During this time the socio-ethical dimension reflected changes in societal and ecumenical contexts as well as transformations in socio-ethical theological emphases. Over the years the Churches converged in their doctrinal reasoning on social ethics as a result of the findings of the doctrinal themes of the dialogue. The study demonstrates that historical reality and doctrinal reasoning cannot be separated in socio-ethical discussion.
