Along with 17 others, including a bankrupt bootmaker and a disgraced nobleman, she set sail from Le Havre on 30 May 1852 on the schooner Dunkirk Independence. The ship's passengers were all to join the Californian Gold Rush as part of a lottery scheme, created by Alexander Dumas, whose aim was to send 5000 unemployed workers to find their fortunes. The journey was eventful, and the ship narrowly missed foundering on a reef, put into port in Rio, rounded Cape Horn in a storm, losing at least one sailor, and finally arrived in San Francisco, the passengers near starving, on 20 November, after an epic journey of five months.Although registered on the passenger manifest as a linen maid, it seems highly likely that she fell into prostitution in San Francisco as did many unmarried women of her time. She invented a sister as her travelling companion in an attempt to cover up her connection to the Gold Rush. She traveled widely in California and beyond, and was taken hostage by Chinese pirates during a voyage to Hong Kong.On her return to France, she published the story of her adventures, which was a huge success, largely because it gave what was at the time a rare account of European emigration to "Eldorado" , written, furthermore by a woman in what was exclusively a male preserve, and was translated into several languages.

Whether stargazing with the naked eye or observing deep space with the largest telescopes in the world, humans have a seemingly neverending fascination with the stars. Our ancestors saw patterns in their random arrangement, inventing both tales of legendary heroes and the pastime of dot-to-dot in one fell swoop. But it's only in the last century or so that the natures of these distant lights have been revealed - and it's more incredible than any legend. How are stars born? How long do they live? And just how many times can you read the word 'trillion' before it starts sounding made up?Find out as astronomer Dr Greg Brown of Royal Observatory Greenwich takes a short diversion from obsessing over black holes to illuminate us about the lives of stars - ending in black holes, naturally.

Although our ancestors visually examined the skies to make sense of the Universe for centuries, space exploration in its truest sense is just a moment in this historical timeline, yet it is how we've significantly improved our understanding of the cosmos. This book begins with the evolution of astronomy, including notable characters, scientific breakthroughs and pinnacle moments. It delves into the development of robotic spacecraft and what uncrewed and crewed missions have uncovered. It questions how this knowledge will aid us in our future space adventures, and highlights the myriad questions that remain unanswered. From stargazing to stepping on the Moon, and from space stations to the prospect of commercial spaceflight, learn more in Dhara Patel's concise history of space exploration.

What is it about this dusty, dry world that has captured our imaginations so completely? Astronomer Patricia Skelton investigates our relationship with Mars, beginning with the earliest observations and the curious conundrums they generated and ending with our ambitious plans for future space missions. She explores how the Red Planet helped solve the mysteries of planetary motion, sparked furious debates about the possibilities of other life in the Solar System, became an early target of space exploration and has since been a testing ground for remarkable new technologies. Over the past 60 years, Mars has played host to a succession of spacecraft, landers and rovers that continue to expand our knowledge and have alsoinspired us to venture further. As we look to the future, how long will it be before astronauts join them on the distant planet's surface?

It captures both the drama of a pivotal moment in Britain's history - the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 - and the majesty of the Tudor monarchy. But while the image it presents is one of assuredness, success and might, the portrait both overstates English power and downplays the real dangers the Armada presented to England and its queen. By understanding the portrait and its symbolism, the history of the Armada and the turbulent Elizabethan age come to life.
