Hardcover. Etat : VG/VG. Royal blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Glossy black dust jacket with color illustration and white lettering. 239 pp. Mainly color illustrations. Published on the occasion of an exhibition held at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, February 24-May 14, 2017, and Neue Galerie New York, June 29-September 25, 2017. "The Viennese artist Richard Gerstl is still regarded as being an insider tip. And yet he was one of the most important artists in Vienna in around 1900, alongside Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka. Although he was only 25 years old when he died, he created an exciting and unusual oeuvre. This volume accompanying the first comprehensive retrospective in Germany introduces all the aspects of this exceptional artist. The artistic career of Richard Gerstl (1883-1908) extended over only approximately five years. During his lifetime he refused to allow his work to be exhibited in any way. As a result of his dramatic early death by his own hand many of his works were destroyed and almost no personal belongings have survived. The present work on his entire oeuvre finally fills the gap this has left. In his subjects portraits, landscapes and nude paintings, including the first nude self-portrait by an artist since Dürer, Gerstl succeeded in freeing his style from that of Salon painting. He applied the paint in an increasingly pastose and free manner and created pictures which are regarded as some of the most modern works of his time."--Provided by publisher.

Hardcover. Etat : VG+/VG. Gold-flecked red cloth/boards; gilt lettering. Glossy black dj with color/bw images; white lettering. 320 pp. full of color and bw images. Catalogue from the sumptuous exhibition held at the Neue Galerie in New York, September 2016 to January 2017. From the museum's web site: This authoritative and generously illustrated book highlights Gustav Klimt's portrayals of women in his work. Klimt was a central figure in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, and a crucial link between nineteenth-century Symbolism and Modernism. His sensual portrayals of women are among his most celebrated works and the focus of this book. Highlights of the publication include Klimt's most important society portraits, such as Serena Lederer (1899); Gertrud Loew (1902); Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907); Mäda Primavesi (1913); Elisabeth Lederer (1914-16); and Ria Munk III (1917). These works cover the gamut of Klimt's portrait style, from his early ethereal works influenced by Symbolism and the Pre-Raphaelite movement to his so-called "golden style," as well as his almost Fauvist depictions. These art works are complemented by preparatory Klimt sketches and decorative arts from the Wiener Werkstätte.

Livre
Hardcover. Etat : VG+. Illustrated glossy dj. Covers purple, gold lettering on spine. 215 pp : color illustrations. This visually stunning volume offers perceptive examinations of several renowned German and Austrian Expressionist artists who redefined modern self-portraiture. The self-portrait has been a vital aspect of artistic expression throughout history. Neo-Classical painters such as El Greco and Rembrandt formalized the practice, and the first half of the 20th century saw a dramatic transformation in the self-portrait's style and context, especially in the hands of the German and Austrian Expressionists. Vibrant reproductions of works by Egon Schiele, Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka, and others are accompanied by essays that explore how these artists--many of whom were classified as "degenerate" by the Nazi party--imbued their images with eloquent expressions of resistance, isolation, entrapment, and provocation. From Schiele's erotically charged and overtly physical paintings to Beckmann's emotionally fraught depictions of psychic trauma, this important examination of a powerful aspect of modern European painting brilliantly illustrates how the Expressionist self-portrait became a powerful weapon against artistic oppression. 00Exhibition: Neue Galerie, New York, USA (28.02.- 24.06.2019). Contents as follows: Preface / Ronald S. Lauder -- Foreword / Renee Price -- "I Lust to Experience Everything" : Egon Schiele and the Self-Portrait / Tobias G. Hardcover. Black and color-illustrated DJ with white and gilt lettering; red cloth boards with black lettering; 399 pp.; richly illustrated (some color). Between 1871 and 1919, the population of Berlin quadrupled and the city became the political center of Germany, as well as the turbulent crossroads of the modern age. This was reflected in the work of artists, directors, writers and critics of the time. As an imperial capital, Berlin was the site of violent political revolution and radical aesthetic innovation. After the German defeat in World War I, artists employed collage to challenge traditional concepts of art. Berlin Dadaists reflected upon the horrors of war and the terrors of revolution and civil war. Between 1924 and 1929, jazz, posters, magazines, advertisements and cinema played a central role in the development of Berlin's urban experience as the spirit of modernity took hold. The concept of the Neue Frau -the modern, emancipated woman-helped move the city in a new direction. Finally, Berlin became a stage for political confrontation between the left and the right and was deeply affected by the economic crisis and mass unemployment at the end of the 1920s. This book explores in numerous essays and illustrations the artistic, cultural and social upheavals in Berlin between 1918 and 1933 and places them in a broader historical framework. -- WorldCat. Hardcover. Blue cloth/boards; gilt lettering. Glossy, black dj with color image and white lettering. 231 pp. with color illustrations throughout; includes a few archival bw photos. Text in English. Catalogue from the exhibition held February to June 2016 at the Neue Galerie, New York. Examining Edvard Munch's influence on his Austrian and German contemporaries, this book offers a fascinating new look at the Norwegian artist, whose painting The Scream has become a symbol of modern angst. Edvard Munch came of age during an artistic period that celebrated beauty and design. But in his own art, Munch explored darker themes alienation, sin, and human vulnerability. His resulting work incorporated the vivid colors of previous styles but intensified their emotional power and paved the way for an entirely new approach to painting. Although much has been written about Munch's life and its influence on his art, there has not been a study of the artist's influence on his German and Austrian peers until now. Featuring contributions by leading scholars in the field, including Patricia Bermann, Alison Chang, Jay Clarke, Reinhold Heller, Jill Lloyd, Nils Ohlsen, and Oystein Uvstedt, this authoritative and beautifully illustrated book explores Munch's impact on Austrian and German artists of the period within an Expressionist context. It also examines work in specific media, such as Munch's seminal contributions to printmaking. The artist's thematic and stylistic leitmotifs are highlighted, including self-portraiture, urban scenes, landscapes, couples, and the artist and his model. Vibrant reproductions of works from throughout Munch's oeuvre, including such icons as The Scream, Madonna, and The Kiss, make this a splendid introduction to the artist as well as an exciting springboard to the study of European Expressionism. VG+/VG (Book is very clean and crips. Dust jacket has light shelfwear.).
