Cloth. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Photographs (illustrateur). First Edition. "The story of Holden Beach - its beginning, its magnificent sand dunes, its stalwart old shipwrecks, its fish shack, its fishermen, its flawless beach, and its continued existence as a quiet and wonderful place for North Carolina's young people to grow up -- all needs to be a part of this state's recorded history. John F. Holden has done this for us in an eloquent way." Author signed and dated (7/2/88) on map FFEP. Illustrated with black and white photographs. A very good+ to near fine copy. Soft cover. Etat : As New. Basic shelf wear. From the preface: "No one understands poverty without experiencing it. You can read about it, hear about it, walk among it, see it on television or any other resources available, but without living it, the full impact of its nature cannot be fully understood. Although it is many bad things, it is not the worst way to be. Hopeless is so much worse. And that, -we never were. We were financially poor, physically well, and spiritually rich. Lessons we learned, morals we adapted, principles we valued, along with the love we shared, are priceless. God gave us an angel mother who loved and trusted Him and was faithful to Him. Therefore, she provided the tenet we would need throughout life." I take heart to Mrs. Cottle's story myself as it is a reminder of my own upbringings.

Hardcover. Etat : Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. [8], 109, [3] pages. Illustrations. Maps. The author was the first elected mayor of Holden Beach, and continues to be hopeful that future elected officials will preserve the "Family Beach" concept. For this second history, the author is indebted to Joyce Shore, who was helpful in securing town records, and to Gretta Saunders, who assisted in preparing the manuscript for publications. Chapters cover The Original Forest; Harvesting Forest Products; A New Settler; Free Range For Domestic Animals; Holden's Beach; Brunswick County Courthouses Relocated; History Repeated; Historical Events; Bridges, A New Beginning; World War II and Holden's Beach; My Beach Venture; Holden Beach Airstrip; Beach Development Increases; Hurricanes; Rebuilding After the Hurricane; Holden Beach Chapel; Incorporation of Island; Holden Beach Mayors and Commissioners; Anniversaries; Job Holden Cemetery; and Unusual Weather. Mr. Holden was born and raised on the family farm in Bolivia, Brunswick County. He began his adulthood with business ventures on Holden Beach only to be interrupted by his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon his return he again pursued business plans on Holden Beach. These included the Retail, Restaurant, Real Estate and construction business. All was lost in 1954 due to Hurricane Hazel and the fact he had no insurance. He was left with considerable debt. Mr. Holden began to rebuild. Over the next four decades he served the community in various capacities. He was the first Mayor of Holden Beach and was an avid supporter of the family beach concept. Many positions of various types were held by Mr. Holden through the years. Mr. Holden was an author of two books about local history and development. Environmental issues were dear to his heart; especially those involving the Lockwood Folly River and Lockwood Folly Inlet.
