Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. Lemmer's first rule is: "Don't get involved." A highly skilled bodyguard with a violent, criminal past, he has settled into a quiet life in Loxton, South Africa, where the rural tranquility has helped to calm his explosive temper. But when a wealthy farmer asks for his help in smuggling a pair of rare black rhinos out of Zimbabwe (where they are murdered for their horns), he has a hard time saying no. Before he knows it.

Trade paperback. Etat : Good. 108th printing. [10], 111, [5] pages. Has substantial pencil notes and underlining to text. Front cover creased. Translated from the original French Text by the author, Samuel Beckett. Though the battle of interpretation still rages around Waiting for Godot, it is now recognized as a seminal work of modern fiction, and has become a part of theater history. Samuel Barclay Beckett (13 April 1906 - 22 December 1989) was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theatre director, poet, and literary translator. A resident of Paris for most of his adult life, he wrote in both French and English. Beckett's idiosyncratic work offers a bleak, tragi-comic outlook on existence and experience, often coupled with black comedy, nonsense and gallows humor. It became increasingly minimalist in his later career, involving more aesthetic and linguistic experimentation. He is considered one of the last modernist writers, and one of the key figures in what Martin Esslin called the "Theatre of the Absurd". His best-known work is his 1953 play Waiting for Godot. Beckett was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his writing, which-in new forms for the novel and drama-in the destitution of modern man acquires its elevation." He was elected Saoi of Aosdána in 1984. The story revolves around two seemingly homeless men simply waiting for someone-or something-named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree, inhabiting a drama spun of their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes, and nonsense, which has been interpreted as mankind's inexhaustible search for meaning. Beckett's language pioneered an expressionistic minimalism that captured the existential post-World War II Europe. His play remains one of the most magical and beautiful allegories of our time.

Hardcover. Etat : Mint. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Edition. "Lifetimes ago, under a banyan tree in the village of Hasnapur, an astrologer cupped his ear . and foretold my widowhood and exile," relates Jyoti, fifth cursed daughter in a family of nine. Though she can't escape fate, Jyoti reinvents herself time and again. She leaves her dusty Punjabi village to marry as Jasmine; travels rough, hidden airways and waters to America to reemerge as Jase, an illegal "day mummy" in hip Manhattan; and lands beached in Iowa's farmlands as Jane, mother to an adopted teenage Vietnamese refugee and "wife" to a banker. Bharati Mukherjee (The Middleman and Other Stories) makes each world exotic, her lyrical prose broken only by the violence Jasmine almost casually recounts and survives.Third novel by the author ofTHE TIGER'S DAUGHTER, WIFE, THE MIDDLEMAN AND OTHER STORIES (which won the 1989 National Book Critics Circle Award), THE HOLDER OF THE WORLD, LEAVE IT TO ME, and MISS NEW INDIA, among others.Mint, unread, first edition, first printng, in as new, mylar-protected dust jacket.{Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} L115.

Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. First American Edition. The spring of 1943 was a desperate season for the Jews of Brussels. The resistance movement had successfully bombed the SS headquarters that January, but anti-Jewish laws were tightening, and a camp had been set up in the nearby town of Mechelen to transport Belgian Jews to Auschwitz. The time had come for action. One day in April, resistance fighter Youra Livchitz, a young doctor, discovered the departure date of the next transport train. With only one weekend in which to organize a raid, Youra recruited two school friends, Jean Franklemon and Robert Maistriau, to pull off one of the most daring rescues of the entire war. Equipped with only three pairs of pliers, a hurricane lamp covered in red paper, and a single pistol, the men ambushed the train, which was transporting 1,618 Jews to Auschwitz. These three lone men freed seventeen men and women before the German guards opened fire. Miraculously, by the time the convoy had reached the German border another 225 prisoners had managed to escape unharmed and found shelter with the locals. In a testament to the solidarity of the Belgians, no one was betrayed. No one, that is, except the three young rescuers, who were turned in by a double agent, imprisoned, and killed. Marion Schreiber's gripping book about the only Nazi death train in World War II to be ambushed draws on private documents, photographs, archive material, and police reports, as well as original research, including interviews with the surviving escapees. Like "Schindler's List,THE TWENTIETH TRAIN creates a vivid, moving portrait of heroism under impossible circumstances. With a Foreword by Paul Spiegel. Translated by Shaun Whiteside. As new, unread, first edition, first printing, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket.{Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} NFS2.
