Mitchell, Margaret, 1900-1949. Lost Laysen. New York: Scribner, 1996, 2d printing number line ending in 2, 127pp., good dust-jacket, light wear along top edge, good white half-cloth with green boards, BUT top edge of pages on glossy paper slightly wavy. A love triangle in the South Pacific is the plot of this recently discovered short novel by the author of Gone with the Wind, written when she was 16 years old. The book also contains intimate letters from the author to a man friend. - CONTENTS: Introduction : Margaret Mitchell and Henry Lave Angel, a lost love -- Lost Laysen : the novella. -- Upon her death in 1949, her personal papers, almost all other writing, and even the original typescript of Gone With the Wind were destroyed. Now, sixty years later, the impossible has happened: The world has another story from Margaret Mitchell. Better still, it's a delight, a fitting predecessor to Americas most beloved epic novel. A spirited tale of love and honor on a doomed South Pacific island called Laysen, Lost Laysen would be justly praised as a charming effort by a remarkable young talent if it were its authors only work. But it isn't, of course, and Lost Laysen also enchants because of the many fascinating ways it foretells Gone With the Wind: in its two central male characters, one a gentleman and the other more rough-hewn, who vie for the attention of a feisty, independent-minded woman, and who will go to any lengths to defend her honor, in its re-creation of a vanished world; and in its unforgettable ending. The real-life romance at the heart of Lost Lay sen's discovery is as enthralling as any work of fiction. Margaret Mitchell gave the story, handwritten in two lined notebooks, to a young suitor, Henry Love Angel. Angel put the notebooks away for safekeeping, just as he put away all of Mitchell's intimate letters to him, as well as their treasured photographs taken over the years. Well over half a century passed before Henry Love Angel's son, realizing what had been passed down to him, brought the story, the letters, and the photos to Atlanta's Road to Tara Museum. Nationally respected Margaret Mitchell historian Debra Freer masterfully weaves Margaret Mitchells never-before-seen letters and photographs into a fascinating introduction that tells the story of Mitchells relationship with Henry Love Angel and puts the writing of Last Laysen into its proper context. Lost Laysen is pure magic, a gift for us to cherish from America's most beloved storyteller. 9780684824284 ISBN 0684824280.

Paperback. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of wear to extremities; mildest rubbing. Binding square and secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 247pp. Translated by Peter Petro. Foreward by Vaclav Havel. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. Trade Paperback. This book is about a young man, Milan, in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia during the 1980's. His father is imprisoned as a dissident, Milan is a non-conformist and the Communist state is not his friend. Milan is in turns a hospital orderly and a hardware store clerk, when he is working. The story is intensely personal involving the reader in Milan's thoughts and feelings as he is confronted by the shocks of his eventful life. The story provides insight into the dreary and oppressive life during that period, but more importantly the author is able to make the reader feel the impact of the sometimes ordinary, sometimes traumatic events Milan experiences, and to make his discoveries, joys and anguish our own. It is philosophical as the main character tries at all turns to extract meaning and personal guidance from what he witnesses. It is also very much a love story and shows the great awe and mystery he finds in his girlfriend, Tania, and other women. This is not always pleasant to read but is gripping in the way that it unfolds his hazardous life without disclosing where it is going, if indeed it is going anywhere. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated.
