Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - One of Euripides' late plays, Ion tells the story of Kreousa, queen of Athens, and her son by the god Apollo. Apollo raped Kreousa; she secretly abandoned their child, assuming thereafter that the god had allowed him to die. Ion, however, is saved to become a ward of Apollo's temple at Delphi. In the play, Kreousa and her husband Xouthos go to Delphi to seek a remedy for their childlessness; Apollo, speaking through his oracle, gives Ion to Xouthos as a son, enraging the apparently still childless Kreousa. Mother tries to kill son, son traps mother at an altar and is about to do her violence; just then, Apollo's priestess appears to reveal the birth tokens that permit Kreousa to recognize and embrace the child she thought she had lost forever. Ion must accept Apollo's duplicity along with his benevolence toward his son. Disturbing riptides of thought and feeling run just below the often shimmering surface of this masterpiece of Euripidean melodrama. Despite Ion's 'happy ending', the concatenation of mistaken identities, failed intrigues, and misdirected violence enacts a gripping and serious drama. Euripides leaves the audience to come to terms with the shifting relations of god and mortals in his complex and equivocal interpretation of myth.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Why did late nineteenth-century African-American women novelist use idealized stories of bourgeois courtship and marriage to mount arguments of social reform during a time when resurgent racism conditioned the lives of all black Americans This is the question at the center of Tate's examination of the novels of Pauline Hopkins, Emma Kelley, Amelia Johnson, Katherine Tillman, and Frances Harper.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - These benchmarks of fairness represent the first time that a concept in moral philosophy has been transposed into a usable policy tool for scoring alternative proposals. The authors show how concerned members of the public and policy makers can use the benchmarks by actually scoring four major proposals for health care reform that exemplify the most prevalent ideas of the 1990s in state and national debates. The authors pay particular attention to the problems of fairness in reforms that rely on competition. Although some reform ideas fare much better that others, all are found weak in establishing open, democratic procedures for deciding the limits of care. They also assess the current changes brought on by the rapid growth of managed care systems since the collapse of national reform.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - How did advertising come to seem ordinary and even natural to turn-of-the-century magazine readers The Adman in the Parlor explores readers' interactions with advertising during a period when not only consumption but advertising itself became established as a pleasure. Garvey's analysis interweaves such diverse texts and artifacts as advertising scrapbooks, chromolithographed trade cards and paper dolls, contest rules, and the advertising trade press. She argues that the readers' own participation in advertising, not top-down dictation by advertisers, made advertising a central part of American culture. As magazines became dependent on advertising rather than sales for their revenues, women's magazines led the way in turning readers into consumers through an interplay of fiction and advertising. General magazines, too, saw little conflict between editorial interests and advertising. Instead, advertising and fiction came to act on one another in complex, unexpected ways. Magazine stories illustrated the multiple desires and social meanings embodied in the purchase of a product. Advertising formed the national vocabulary. At once invisible, familiar, and intrusive, advertising both shaped fiction of the period and was shaped by it. The Adman in the Parlor unearths the lively conversations among writers and advertisers about the new prevalence of advertising for mass-produced, nationally distributed products.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Whether, with whom, and when to have children are among the most precious of our private decisions. Increasingly, however, the interests of others in these decisions raise difficult questions about the role of government and health professionals in influencing reproductive choice. Nowhere is this tension felt more keenly than in the context of HIV and AIDS. This book takes on the tough issues related to HIV and childbearing: Is there a moral right to have children What are the limits of persuasion Are there constitutional constraints on interference with reproduction What are the precedents with restricting the childbearing behavior of women who use drugs The book includes original work by doctors, lawyers, ethicists, and public health professionals. Also included are the experiences of HIV-infected women and their health care providers. It concludes with recommendations for clinical practice and public policy. Public policy makers, health care providers, practitioners in bioethics, pediatrics, health law, and obstetrics/gynecology will find this book invaluable when dealing with issues related to HIV and childbearing.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - A self-styled 'American vandal' who pursued literary celebrity with 'a mercenary eye' even as genteel America proclaimed him the American Rabelais, Samuel Clemens, as Mark Twain, straddled the conflicts between culture and commerce that characterized the era he named the Gilded Age. In 'Littery Man', Richard Lowry examines how Twain used these conflicts in his major texts to fashion an 'autobiography of authorship', a narrative of his own claims to literary authority at that moment when the American Writer emerged as a profession. Drawing on a wide range of cultural genres - popular boys' fiction, childrearing manuals, travel narratives, autobiography, and criticism and fiction of the period - Lowry reconstructs how Twain participated in remaking the 'literary' into a powerful social category of representation. He shows how, as one of our culture's first modern celebrities, Samuel Clemens transformed his life into the artful performance we have come to know as Mark Twain, and his texts into a searching critique of modern identity in a mass-mediated society. 'Littery Man' will appeal to both Twain scholars and to scholars and students of nineteenth-century American literature and culture.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Since their introduction in 1984, milk quotas have become a prominent feature of the Common Agricultural Policy. The vigorous and yet at times questionable trade in milk quotas is a strong indication that its legal ramifications are underestimated at their peril. Indeed practitioners in this area cannot afford to ignore the astonishingly large number and high value of dealings in quota. Academics as well are no longer in doubt as to the importance of quota legislation and its ramifications. Milk quotas constitute a major and novel extension of Community power in the agricultural sector and represent a potent force in the development of Community law. Indeed, the Common Agricultural Policy gives rise to the single largest body of cases before the European Court of Justice with milk quotas taking a leading role. This indispensable and up-to-date practitioner's manual explores the influence that milk quotas have had on both EC and UK legislation. The author examines exactly how these quotas operate in relation to landlords, tenants, taxation and, consequently, rural culture itself. He goes on to consistently link the domestic effects of milk quota legislation to the European Court of Justice and identifies ways in which milk quota regulation is influencing other areas of EC law.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Liddell & Scott's Greek-English Lexicon (9/e 1940) is the most comprehensive and up-to-date ancient Greek dictionary in the world. It is used by every student of ancient Greek in the English-speaking world, and is an essential library and scholarly purchase there and in W. Europe and Japan. The main dictionary covers every surviving ancient Greek author and text discovered up to 1940, from the Pre-Classical Greek of the 11C - 8C BC (for example Homer and Hesiod), through Classical Greek (7C - 5C BC) to the Hellenistic Period, including the Greek Old and New Testaments.Entries list irregular inflections, and together with the definition, each sense includes citations from Greek authors illustrating usage. The Lexicon is Greek into English only, as are other ancient Greek dictionaries. This is the market expectation among both students and scholars. In 1968 the Lexicon was updated with a Supplement, which was available as a separate volume (until 1992) or bound together with the dictionary.Representing the culmination of 13 years' work, the new Revised Supplement is a complete replacement for the 1968 Supplement. Nearly twice the size of the 1968 edition, with over 20,000 entries, it adds to the dictionary words and forms from papyri and inscriptions discovered between 1940 and the 1990s as well as a host of other revisions, updatings, and corrections to the main dictionary. Linear B forms are shown within entries for the first time, and the Revised Supplement gives the dictionary a date-range from 1200 BC to 600 AD. It is fully cross-referenced to the main text but additions have been designed to be easily used without constant reference to the main text.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - This book covers important new developments of the last five years in the area of cluster chemistry, presenting an excellent view of the successes and shortcomings of both current state-of-the-art theory and experiment. Each chapter, contributed by a leading expert, places heavy emphasis on theory without which the detailed analysis of the spectroscopic and kinetic results would be compromised. The cluster reactions reviewed in this work include electron and proton transfer reactions, hot atom reactions, vibrational predissociation, radical reactions, and ionic reactions. Some of the theories applied throughout the text are product state distribution determinations, state-to-state dynamical information, and access to the transition stage of the reaction. The discussions serve as a benchmark of how far the field has come since the mid 1980's and will be a good update for students and researchers interested in this area of physical chemistry.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Elizabeth Boa's new study of Kafka centres on gender. It shows how, in an age of reactionary hysteria, Kafka rejected patriarchy yet exploited women as literary raw material. Drawing on Kafka's letters to his fiancee and to the Czech journalist, Milena Jesenska, Boa illuminates the transformation of details of everyday life into the strange yet uncannily familiar signs which are Kafka's stylistic hallmark. Kafka: Gender, Class, and Race in the Letters and Fictions argues that gender cannot be isolated from other dimensions of identity. The study relates Kafka's alienating images of the male body and fascinated disgust of female sexuality to the body-culture of the early twentieth century and to interfusing militaristic, racist, gender, and class ideologies. This is the context too for the stereotypes of the New Woman, the massive Matriarch, the lower-class seductress, and the assimilating Jew. The book explores Kafka's exploitation yet subversion of such stereotypes through the brilliant literary devices which assure his place in the modernist canon.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The contributions to this volume examine the relationship between physical and human resources and population within this context of poverty and underdevelopment, historically unprecedented population growth, and environmental issues. Attention is focussed on those resources most critical for human well-being, including soil, water, and energy, on the one hand, and education, social organization, and economic management, on the other. The discussion is framed by a broad subdivision and global population prospects, the relationships between population and physical, biological, and human resources, human health, and human settlements. Introductory statements, including an address by Pope John Paul II, and concluding remarks draw out the common threads and point the way towards future action and research. This book originated in a study week organized by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences to bring the best available scientific evidence to bear on this complex and still inadequately explored topic. The study week brought together experts in demography and from the physical, biological, political, economic, anthropological, religious, cultural, and health sciences, to investigate past experience and observed trends. Through this multidisciplinary analysis, a reference base was assembled that is factual, amply documented, and as scientifically sound as possible.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The field of unimolecular reaction has witnessed impressive advances in both experimental and theoretical techniques during the past 20 years. These developments have resulted in experimental measurements that finally permit critical test of the major assumptions made more than 60 years ago when Rice and Ramsperger and Kassel first proposed their statistical RRK theory of unimolecular decay.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - After the invention of a national script c. AD 400, Armenians rapidly developed their own literary forms, drawing on foreign texts as well as their own traditions. Historical writing is the most original genre in classical and medieval Armenian literature. The collection known as the Georgian Chronicles ('Life of Georgia' in Georgian) was finally codified in the eighteenth century. It includes the most famous of the chronicles, though these form only a small part of Georgian historical writing. The thirteenth-century Armenian version is in fact the earliest attestation of this growing corpus of texts, pre-dating all extant Georgian manuscripts of it. This book presents the two texts, Georgian and Armenian, in English translation for the first time. The Introduction and Commentary draw attention to the ways in which the unknown Armenian translator changed his original material in a pro-Armenian fashion. His rendering became the standard source for early Georgian history used by later Armenian historians. The book includes a useful overview of the background to the chronicles, the history and culture of christian Georgia and Armenia, and their respective literatures.
