Die sechzehn Aufsätze beleuchten Strategien, die bedeutende Autoren der Frühen Neuzeit aus Italien, Frankreich und Spanien (u. a. Rabelais, Bruno, Campanella, Cervantes) zum Einsatz brachten, wenn ihnen daran gelegen war, Erkenntnisse in narrativen oder poetischen Werken zu vermitteln oder gelehrte Debatten ihrer Zeit in Dialogen künstlerisch aufzubereiten. Die Positionen, um die es in den behandelten Texten geht, sind dabei nicht notwendigerweise «fortschrittlich-aufklärerisch». Ausgangspunkt des Projekts war die Frage, ob den behandelten Autoren eher an einer möglichst großen Verbreitung der von ihnen aufbereiteten Inhalte gelegen war oder daran, diesen Inhalten zu größerem Prestige zu verhelfen.
