Paperback. Etat : Very Good. How do human societies provide for the wellbeing of their members? How far can we organise the ways in which we care for and about each other? And who should take responsibility for providing the support we all need? These are some of the fundamental questions addressed by social policy today. In this short introduction, suitable for students at any level, Hartley Dean explains the extraordinary scope and importance of social policy. He explores its foundations and contemporary significance; the principal issues it addresses and their diverse economic, political and sociological dimensions, and concludes by looking at the fundamental challenges facing social policy in a dramatically changing world. Taking an innovative approach to social policy as the study of human wellbeing, Hartley Dean examines the ways in which governments and peoples throughout the world attend to, promote, neglect or even undermine the things that make life worth living. These include essential services, such as healthcare and education; the means of livelihood, such as jobs and money; and vital but sometimes intangible things, such as physical and emotional security. Some of these are organised by governments and official bodies. Others are provided by businesses, social groups, community organizations, neighbours and families. Trying to understand all these elements, which together constitute human wellbeing, is the stuff of social policy. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. This is an exciting new introductory textbook for anyone studying disability. As well as providing an excellent overview of the existing literature in the area, the book also develops an understanding of disability that has implications for both sociology and society.Over the last three decades our understanding of disability has changed dramatically. Once perceived as a largely medical problem affecting only a small number of people, it is now regarded as a major social and political issue. Exploring Disability charts both the traditional and contemporary approaches to the area before focusing on the social model of disability. In a series of chapters, the authors then go on to look at the relationship between disabled people and areas such as medical sociology, disability studies, social policy, politics and culture. The book ends with an exploration of the future of theory and research on disability.Exploring Disability will be indispensable for students seeking to understand disability within sociology, disability studies, social policy, politics, cultural studies, and health-related disciplines including medicine. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. This book develops a distinctive and novel approach to data analysis, while at the same time providing a basic text accessible to students with no prior knowledge of the subject. The techniques upon which the book is based are not the traditional ones, but are founded upon modes of data analysis which have recently profoundly changed statistical practice among professionals. Exploratory data analysis is a fundamental statistical development, which this book introduces to a general audience. The examples used to illustrate the techniques described are all real ones, drawn from important social research over the past decade, and designed to illuminate interesting and significant sociological and political debates. The sources of the data utilized are described in the appendices, and attention is drawn to some of the deficiencies in the data. The theme is that data are produced, not given. The data sets used will also be available in machine-readable form and the exercise can be done using the statistical package 'Minitab'.The book is suitable for students in a range of social science disciplines, including sociology, economics, political science and geography. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Contemporary British Society is the second edition of a very successful textbook covering all aspects of the social structure of modern Britain. The text has been thoroughly revised and updated, using the latest statistical information and recent empirical studies. The authors have also introduced new arguments and debates where these have added to the understanding of changes in British society. There are separate chapters dealing with the major areas of modern life in Britain - work, class, gender ethnicity, families and households, towns and cities, education, health, culture and media, deviance and politics. Each of these chapters are further subdivided into smaller and self-contained sections on more specific topics. The emphasis throughout the book is on an accessible, user-friendly, and non-technical approach. It is written in a jargon-free and approach- able style: there is extensive cross referencing and frequent and clear summarizing of arguments: and it is very well illustrated with photo- graphs, diagrams, graphs, drawings and cartoons. Contemporary British Society is written for students of introductory sociology whether they are taking 'A' level or are in the first year of an undergraduate course in a higher education institution. It will also be useful for those taking courses in other subjects, such as social policy, health or town planning, which demand knowledge of particular aspects of British society.Nicholas Abercrombie and Alan Warde are both Professors of Sociology at the University of Lancaster.Keith Soothill and John Urry are, respectively, Professor of Applied Social Science and Professor of Sociology at the University of Lancaster. Sylvia Walby is Professor of Sociology at the University of Bristol. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Etat : Good. What is democracy? Why should we value it? What is the relation between democracy and individual rights? Is majority rule always democratic? Why do we have political parties? Are some electoral systems more democratic than others? What is the relation between nationalism and democracy, or democracy and a market economy? How can democracy be maintained and improved? What difference does it make to ordinary people? What is its future? These are only some of the questions addressed in this important new textbook. Its authors were specially commissioned by UNESCO to assemble eighty of the most pressing questions about democracy in the world today, and to provide clear and authoritative answers to them. The result is a masterpiece of succinct exposition, which will be of value to all those who want to know more about democratic theory and practice, of value to students, interested citizens, political activists or employees in the public service, whether they live in established or developing democracies. The questions are systematically arranged in six sections: basic concepts and principles; free and fair elections; open and accountable government; individual rights and their defence; democratic or civil society; the future of democracy. The book forms an outstanding introduction to what is, perhaps, the most important concept in politics. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. As we struggle with the legacy of the crisis and with the prospect of accelerating environmental degradation, it is time to ask not what we can do for capitalism but what capitalism can do for us, as citizens of a democratic society. In Civic Capitalism, Colin Hay and Anthony Payne build on their influential analysis of the crisis of the Anglo-liberal growth model to set out a coherent account of the steps required to build an alternative that is more sustainable socially, economically and environmentally. They argue that it is time to move on from the Anglo-liberal model of capitalism whose failings were so cruelly exposed by the crisis. They outline a new model that will work better in advanced capitalist societies, showing how this might be acheived in Britain today. They call this civic capitalism the governance of the market, by the state, in the name of the people, to deliver collective public goods, equity and social justice. This reverses the long ascendant logic of Anglo-liberalism in which citizens have been made to answer to the perceived logics of the capitalism they have been made to serve. The crisis shows us that we can no longer be driven by the perceived imperatives of the old model and by those who have claimed for far too long and, as it turns out, falsely to be able to discern for us the imperatives of the market. It is now time to ask what capitalism can do for us and not what we can do for capitalism. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of development and the developing world. Written in a clear and accessible way, it introduces students to the key theoretical perspectives and conceptual frameworks in development studies, and provides a guide to contemporary issues and current debates. The early part of the book focuses on definitions and theories of development, providing a historical account of the evolution of development theory and practice in the last few decades -- through the impasse in development studies in the 1980s to the consolidation of the neo--liberal consensus across the world. Subsequent chapters analyse key development strategies -- the role of the state and of international trade -- in the context of a number of contemporary problems, including the spread of HIV in Africa, the use of GM technology in agriculture and the role of education, population growth and urbanization. In doing so, Kambhampati highlights the interdependence between the causes and consequences of development, emphasizing why the development problem has been hard both to identify and to solve. Development and the Developing World will be an essential text for undergraduate and graduate students coming to the subject for the first time and taking courses in development studies, globalization and international relations. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Search engines have become a key part of our everyday lives. Yet while much has been written about how to use search engines and how they can be improved, there has been comparatively little exploration of what the social and cultural effects might be. Like all technologies, search engines exist within a larger political, cultural, and economic environment. This volume aims to redress this balance and to address crucial questions such as: How have search engines changed the way we organize our thoughts about the world, and how we work? What are the `search engine wars', what do they portend for the future of search, and who wins or loses? To what extent does political control of search engines, or the political influence of search engines, affect how they are used, misused, and regulated? Does the search engine help shape our identities and interactions with others, and what implications does this have for privacy? Informed members of the information society must understand the social contexts in which search engines have been developed, what that development says about us as a society, and the role of the search engine in the global information environment. This book provides the perfect starting point. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Politicians invoke grand ideas: social justice, liberty, equality, community. But what do these ideas really mean? How can politicians across the political spectrum appeal to the same values? Political Philosophy: A Beginners' Guide for Students and Politicians answers these important questions. Accessible and lively, the book is an ideal student text, but it also brings the insights of the world's leading political philosophers to a wide general audience. Using plenty of examples, it equips readers to think for themselves about the ideas that shape political life. Democracy works best when both politicians and voters move beyond rhetoric to think clearly and carefully about the political principles that should govern their society. But clear thinking is difficult in an age when established orthodoxies have fallen by the wayside. Bringing political philosophy out of the ivory tower and within the reach of all, this book provides us with tools to cut through the complexities of modern politics. In so doing, it makes a valuable contribution to the democratic process. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Etat : Fair. Local government and the local structure of the state have recently emerged as major areas of political conflict. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the crisis in local - central relations, firmly placing political events in the context of the development of both central political powers and local autonomy. The book focuses on the key period of increasing centralisation since 1976, which has involved progressive central control over local government finance, centralized policies for local service delivery, centrally-steered experiments such as Enterprise Zones and UDCs and all-out attacks on local government autonomy with rate-capping and abolition. But this period also includes the emergence of resistance campaigns and alternative local policies. The authors examine how local - central relations have changed and why they have changed. As well as examining local - central relations as a whole, the book has core studies of local economic policy, housing, civil defence, health, water and transport. Evaluating the debates on local state and local government, the book provides a conceptualization of the nature and role of the local state within the process of uneven development. This work should be of interest to 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates studying local government, post-graduates, researchers and teachers in political science, government, geography, urban sociology and urban studies. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Challenging the conventional view that the family is a coherent institution, this work argues that sociologists and anthropologists should concentrate on the study of human reproduction. Robertson's view is that looking back on the pre-industrial world can help us understand people's dependence on such institutions as banks, schools, factories, clinics and others. It can also increase awareness of how human experience of industrialism has biased people's thinking about family life. The book pursues the idea that in order to understand and perhaps influence key issues of modern life - gender and generation gaps, economic and political implications of increased longevity - people need to readdress the role of the family, ignoring emotional prejudices, and assemble new interpretations of the social organization of reproduction. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. How should we understand the nature and scope of democracy? To what domains of life should it be applied? Or, alternatively, should democracy be clearly defined to maintain other important ends? This study examines changing responses to these questions from classical Athens to modern times. The context, nature and limits of each major development in democratic theory are explored. Among the thinkers discussed are Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Wollstonecraft, Rousseau, Mill and Marx, as well as 20th-century analysts of democracy including Weber, Dahl, Hayek and Macpherson. The book concludes with an argument that seeks to move contemporary discussion beyond the seemingly endless juxtaposition of one classical position with another. It defends a conception of democracy that departs decisively from both the liberal and Marxist traditions. David Held is the author of Introduction to Critical Theory: Horkheimer to Habermas, Habermas: Critical Debates, co-author of Classes, Power and Conflict: Classical and Contemporary Debates, States and Societies and State and Society in Contemporary Britain. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. The eighteenth-century Enlightenment saw the birth of the concept of modernity - of an era which sought legitimacy not from the past but from the future. No longer would human beings invoke the authority of tradition; instead, the societies emerging in the West would justify themselves by their success, through the application of scientific knowledge, in increasing control of the world. Ever since this idea of modernity was formulated, it has provoked immense debate. In exploring this debate, Alex Callinicos provides a wide-ranging historical and introduction to social theory which traces its connections with central themes in modern philosophy, with the development of political economy, and with the impact of evolutionary biology on social thought. The theorists treated include Montesquieu, Adam Smith and the Scottish Enlightenment, Hegel, Marx, Tocqueville, Maistre, Gobineau, Darwin, Spencer, Kautsky, Nietzsche, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Freud, Luk, Gramsci, Heidegger, Keynes, Hayek, Parsons, the Frankfurt School, L, Althusser, Foucault, Habermas and Bourdieu. A concluding chapter considers the contemporary condition of social theory including the analysis of late modernity by Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens. Alex Callinicos's volume provides a remarkably comprehensive and lucid account of social theory. It will be essential reading for students of politics, sociology and social and political thought. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Politicians invoke grand ideas: social justice, democracy, liberty, equality, community. But what do these ideas really mean? How can politicians across the political spectrum appeal to the same values? This revised and expanded edition of Political Philosophy: A Beginner's Guide for Students and Politicians, answers these important questions. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Sociology has established itself as the leading textbook in the field. The book has been acclaimed across the world for its lucidity, comprehensiveness and accessibility. The second edition of the text has been extensively revised and contains much new material. Throughout the book an effort has been made to secure the very latest empirical data and to present it in an attractive and involving way.As in the first edition, the author includes a diversity of areas of discussion which barely figure at all in other introductory texts in sociology. The book contains, for example, extended analyses of the 1989 revolutions in Eastern Europe and Russia, the upsurge of new forms of nationalism and ethnicity, the debate over the 'end of history' - as well as covering all the more orthodox areas of sociological work. The work maintains all the distinctive emphases which made it so widely used in its original form.It is strongly comparative and accentuates the essential importance of globalising influences upon social life. Combining originality, liveliness and accuracy, the second edition of this major text is indispensable reading for anyone wanting to gain an informed understanding of the nature of modern societies today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
