very good dust-jacket, light wear, very good red cloth. BRENTANO, FRANZ. Sensory and noetic consciousness: psychology from an empirical standpoint III. Edited by Oskar Kraus ; English ed. edited by Linda L. McAlister ; translated by Margarete Schättle and Linda L. McAlister. London and Henley : New York: Routledge & Kegan Paul ; Humanities Press, 1981, xxv, 139pp., . International library of philosophy and scientific method. - Translation of Vom sinnlichen und noetischen Bewusstein, which was published posthumously to continue the author's Psychologie vom empirischen Standpunkt, v. 1-2. - Sensory and Noetic Consciousness is a compilation of Franz Brentano s later essays and dictations on various aspects of psychology, a subject which he first wrote about in his Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint of 1874. Shortly after the turn of the century, Brentano s thought underwent a Copernican Revolution and he changed his views on some of the most basic doctrines of his Psychology. Edited by Oskar Kraus after Brentano s death, Sensory and Noetic Consciousness contains Brentano s revisions of many of his earlier views as well as new material, including his doctrine of direct and oblique modes of perception, various sorts of objects of mental acts and the perception of space and time. 9780710004048 ISBN 0710004044.

Hardcover. viii, 336p., illustrations as called for with the b&w plates on inserted coated stock, hardbound in 8.5x5.5 inch dark green cloth boards spine-titled gilt. Generally quite good: spine lettering a little dimmed from handling, endsheet bears a neat small pencilled note where purchased, a sound clean copy. The contents are not unworthy of Dian Fossey/Jane Goodall insights, however limited; observations took place in Tenerife (Spanish-owned island that geographically is Africa) during and following World War I.

Umschlag mit kl. Läsuren. - Since the second World War and since the establishment of the National Health Service there has been a revolution in the treatment of the mentally ill and in the related hospital administration. Previously the trend had been to segregate the mentally ill from the rest of the community by legal measures and to confine them to remote institutions for custodial care. The present book, based on University research, investigates one of the most radical of the new ventures in psychiatric care, namely, a comprehensive service of in-patient and outpatient care extended to the mentally ill by a psychiatric unit which is an integral part of a general hospital and the centre of a well-defined and accessible catchment area. The book gives a valuable outline history of this new type of hospital organization, coupled with evidence as to its effectiveness. It describes a representative sample of an annual intake of new psychiatric patients into such a hospital, their management over the subsequent four years and how they and their families fared. The findings indicate that the correct line of advance has been found and that with this type of psychiatric support the mentally ill can, in the main, work or live contained in their local community without the trauma of compulsory admission to mental hospital or long periods of withdrawal, and without any undue burden on other services or on their families. The authors demonstrate the preference of the public for services of this type and emphasize the need for close medical and social collaboration if such a service is to be maintained.
