There are, in fact, no fewer than thirty~four distinct natural regions in our country, each with its own characteristic structural framework which has given rise to distinctive landforms and, for the most part, distinctive climate, vegetation, soils, water, and even human economies and cultural traits. This book is a broad but detailed look at the natural features and resources of our country, their origins, and their influences on our history. In the first part the author surveys the physical structure of the United States and develops the principles of earth science that are necessary for an understanding of physiography. (No other background in any of the natural sciences is assumed.) In the second part he applies these principles to the physiographic provinces of the United States ( including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico) and examines each of these regions in detail. Throughout the book discussions are illustrated by numerous maps and examples. The book is designed especially as a text~book for courses in physiography in which the natural features of the United States are emphasized. The author's course in the Isaiah Bowman Department of Geography at The Johns Hopkins University is intended for students majoring in subjects other than the earth sciences, but majors in the earth sciences can also profit from the broad view presented here. The book is of particular value to teachers or future teachers of courses in earth science at the elementary or high school ~. Anyone with a lively curiosity about the world around him will find this book worthy of perusal. The diligent reader will soon find himself viewing the surrounding land with a better understanding and a greater appreciation of the unparalleled richness of our country~and with an urgent concern for its proper use.
