From the collection of Betty Anderson, legendary art director of publisher Knopf in the late 20th century as evidenced by her (small and unobtrusive) inventory number on front paste down; Edward Eggleston's The Hoosier School-Master is a coming-of-age story set in the fictional town of Middlebury, Indiana, in the 1870s. The book tells the story of Tomsey, a farm boy who is sent to live with his uncle in the town after his father is killed in a farming accident. Tomsey is initially homesick and bored, but he quickly finds a community and friends among the adults in town. He also becomes interested in the schoolhouse, which is run by the schoolmaster, Mr. Edwards. Mr. Edwards is a stern but caring teacher, and he helps Tomsey to find his place in the world. The Hoosier School-Master is a beautiful and powerful book, written with humor and emotion. It is a story about the power of education and the importance of community.; 8vo; 226, [2] pages.
