This development was supported by a rather powerfull development taking place in the area of texture studies itself: Besides the usual, more qualitative, characterization of a texture by pole figures a fully quantitative description by a three-dimensional orientation distribution function (ODF) has been increasingly applied. There are two sides to the problem of quantitative representation of textures. One involves the mathematical technique associated with the acquisition of an ODF, and its transforms, from the experimental data, whereas the other concerns the methods of a rational description and interpretation of an ODF. The fust side can be considered from the practicaf point of view as experimental-data processing which is accomplished by a computer and is sort of a continuation of the measurement itself. Much attention has been paid to this problem, particulary by Bunge, who has written up achievements in this field in this extensive monograph /1/ and in conference proceedings /2/. There is also avaiable a rather detailed presen tation of a system of subroutines written in Fortran /3/ which allows standard computations to be made without having to go into the mathematical details of the method. 300 pp. Englisch.

Das von KNAPP und Mitarbeitern und anderen angegebene, mittels Abstrichen registrierte, unterschiedliche AusmaB der Wundkon tamination konnte jedoch im eigenen Kollektiv bisher nicht ent sprechend reproduziert werden. Eindeutig klinisch nachweisbar zeigt sich der Wert der Infektions prophylaxe durch die Laminar Flow Technik im Vergleich identi scher Kollektive bei der Implantation von HUfttotalendoprothesen. Die Bedeutung dieser Technik, die lediglich EinfluB auf die aerogene Kontamination nimmt, darf jedoch nicht Uberschatzt werden. Nach wie vor sind die wesentlichen Grundlagen der Infek tionsprophylaxe eine saubere und gewebeschonende Technik und einwandfreie Disziplin des Operationsteams. So ist nicht nur das Ausmaß traumati scher Hirnschäden in der Akutphase klarer zu beurteilen, sondern auch die Überwachung der posttraumatischen Verläufe ist um vieles exakter und sicherer geworden. Mit zunehmender Erfahrung haben sich aber auch differentialdiagnostische Probleme ergeben. Es ist deshalb zu begrüßen, daß die Verfasser der vorliegenden Studie die Ergebnisse, die sie an dem großen neuro-traumatalogischen Krankengut zweier neurochirurgischer Kliniken gewonnen haben, im Zusammenhang darstellen. Dabei wird einmal der diagnostische Stellenwert der Methode für die traumatisch bedingten Hirnschädigungen herausgearbeitet, zum anderen auf mögliche Fehlinterpretationen der Befunde hingewiesen. Der Vergleich mit invasiven Untersuchungsmethoden wie der Angiographie und der Luftencephalagraphie läßt die Überlegenheit der nicht invasiven Computertomographie, vor allem in der Verlaufsbeobachtung und der Diagnostik von Folgezuständen, erkennen. Der besondere Wert des Buches liegt darin, daß es von Klinikern geschrieben ist, die sich über die therapeutischen Konsequenzen der Untersuchungsmethode im klaren sind. Bei allem Enthusiasmus für die neue Untersuchungsmethode bleibt die Praevalenz der klinischen Befunde deutlich. Den Allgemeinarzt, der den Elementarunterricht lang hinter sich, eine große Erfahrung gegenwärtig und zuviel Arbeit vor sich hat, werden möglicherweise weder ein 'Kleiner Kate chismus' noch die Exerzitien einer 'advanced hematology' ansprechen. Wird er zufrieden sein mit kochbuchartig knappen Anweisungen Es ist schwer, den verordneten Extrakt an 'Tatsachenwissen' so zuzubereiten, daß er auch genießbar bleibt. Um die Wahl zu treffen, müßte man gleich gut zu Hause sein in der Welt der Praxis und in den Gärten der Hämatologie. In den letzten Jahren hat sich klar erwiesen, daB Volurnenersatz durch kolloidale Plasmae-rsatzmittel in weiten Grenzen moglich ist und aufgrund der Verbesserung der FlieBeigenschaften des Blutes gegenUber Vollbluttransfusionen vorteilhaft sein kann. Extreme Blutverluste ausgenommen, sollte daher der primare Vo lurnenersatz nicht mehr durch die_ risikobelastete Transfusion von Fremdblut erfolgen. Wahrend in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika heute den natUr lichen Kolloidlosungen (Plasmaproteinlosung/PPL, Hurnanalburnin) weitgehend der Vorzug gegeben wird, werden in Europa fUr die Volurnenersatztherapie hauptsachlich kUnstliche Kolloide (Dextran, Gelatine und Starke) angewandt. PPL und Hurnanalbumin werden aus menschlichem Plasma- und Placen tagewebe gewonnen. Urn den stetigen Bedarf an Plasma deck en zu konnen, wurde die Plasmapherese entwickelt, wobei Erythrozyten und Plasma durch Zentrifugation getrennt und erstere dem Spender retransfundiert werden. Da die wiederholte Plasmapherese erheb liche Gesundheitsschaden zur Folge haben kann, wandte sich die World Health Organisation 1975 in einer Resolution gegen die kommerzielle Plasmapherese zur Gewinnung und zurn Export von Plasma und Plasmaderivaten. Im Februar 1977 sah sich auch die Bundesarztekammer veranlaBt, Richtlinien zur DurchfUhrung der Plasmapherese zu erlassen. PPL und Hurnanalburnin werden daher in Zukunft nur dann in groBerem Umfang als bisher zur VerfUgung stehen, wenn die Indikationsstellung zur Transfusion von Voll blut starker zur Anwendung von Blutbestandteilen, d. h. im Sinne der gezielten Hamotherapie (Stich) geandert werden wird. This was held between June 28 and July 1, 1977, under the joint chairman ship of Professor Samuel Schwartz and the editor. The organizers and chairmen of the symposium wish to thank the Sozialminister of Hessen, Armin Clauss, the President of the German Society for Clinical Chemis try, Professor A. Delbrlick, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Philipp University, Professor F. Neurath, for their support and patronage. We are also grateful to Professor A. Treibs of the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Technical University of Munich. Professor Treibs, a former pupil, co-worker and now successor to the Nobel laureate Hans Fischer, kindly accepted the honorary presidency of this international symposium. The aim of the symposium was an inten sive exchange of ideas within a mUltidisciplinary group of scientists who are specialists in their fields of research. It is obvious that a two-day symposium covering such a wide range of topics could only highlight certain aspects of the latest research on the cardiovascular system. The book is divided into three sections. The first part deals with arterial hemo dynamics. Emphasized are the mechanical properties of the arterial wall, in particular the smooth muscle, fundamental parameters for the description of pulse wave propagation, such as attenuation, phase velocity, and reflection of pulse waves. Furthermore, new methods for recording arterial diameters and the latest results in determining pulsatile pressure and pulsatile diameter of arteries in vivo as well as from calculations based on models of the arterial system are presented. The second part deals with applications of the control theory and the principles of optimality of the cardiovascular system in toto and of single regions of this system. In fact, crystals differ from the molecules of finite size that are studied in chemistry, only in their extremely large number of particles. Furthermore, the existence of faces, which limit the spread of crystals in space, necessarily breaks the periodicity of the system. For these reasons it is natural to apply to crystals the concepts and methods that have been widely tested in the study of molecules. Pauling first emphasized this point 1 and used it to explain the electronic structure of crystals, thought to be infinite and perfect. The aim of this work is to show, with the help of a few examples, the possibilities offered by quantum chemistry for tackling the problems of crystal electronic structure, of crystallographic arrangements as well as their macroscopic shape, and of distortion effects caused by the presence of faces. This is due to chemoreception, which offers suf ficient possibilities for animals living in water to orient and maintain themselves suc cessfully in individual and social life. Therefore, at least within the vertebrates the chemical senses have developed to their highest standard in water. Chemoreception is evidently present in land-dwelling mammals and is still dependent on moist surfaces, but the optical sense, in its highest stage of development, takes priority. In contrast, in aquatic animals vision generally plays only a subordinate role (c. f. Grant & Mackie, 1974). Although the high sensitivity of the sense of taste in fish has been extensively shown in physiological experiments, corresponding detailed morphological data are lacking. In these cases, groups of cell bodies or synapses appear as basically similar configurations, which, however, are different in detail from each other. Such abstract patterns of connectivity are of a statistical nature and do not allow, in a given example, for the prediction of the localization or connections of a particular cell. 'Wiring diagrams', therefore, can be obtained only from a multitude of individual observations. In contrast, in several sensory organs, concrete patterns occur that con sist of a regular, mosaic-like, and geometric arrangement of similar cell types.
