On the basis of these studies, social scientists have set forth certain generalizations concerning the types of American minor parties, their characteristics, their functions, and the obstacles they face in the American party system. However, in their comparative analysis of political parties, political scientists have generally limited themselves to comments about the major parties. This study examines in detail all the minor parties which have participated in the national elections of the Federal Republic of Germany since its inception in 1949 in light of the descriptive and explanatory generalizations which have been formulated about minor parties in the United States. The purpose of such an analysis is threefold. First, it provides materials on the West German minor parties which will be readily accessible for cross-national research. Second, through comparisons with the West German experience, the generalizations pro duced to explain American minor parties are made more suitable for comparative analysis. Third, and most important, it seeks to demonstrate that some minor parties play an important role in a party system and that, therefore, minor parties should not be ignored in the comparative analysis of political parties. I am deeply indebted to Professors William B. Gwyn and James D. Cochrane for their help on this project. This work could not have been completed without Professor Gwyn's guidance and prodding. 236 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Some time ago I published a small piece \* dealing with a charming little essay on 'the state of ether in magnetic fields', which the sixteen-year-old Einstein had written while he was awaiting admission to the E. T. H. in Zurich. This paper sought to trace the continuity between Einstein's early interest in electrodynamics and his later work on the special and general relativity theories. On reading this paper, Professor Eugene Wigner asked me whether David Hilbert had not independently discovered the field equations of gravitation. \*\* His impression from his stay in Gottingen (where Wigner had been Hilbert's assistant for one year in the late nineteen-twenties) was that Hilbert had indeed done so, and he asked me if it was true. I replied to Professor Wigner about Hilbert's contribution to the theory of gravitation. t He kindly encouraged me to expand my account to deal with the intricate and exciting details of the early years in the formulation of the general relativity theory of gravitation. This is what I have sought to do in this study. Albert Einstein created the general relativity theory of gravitation and dominated its development through the rest of his life. His early work on the theory of gravitation, from 1912 to 1916, had the drama of high adventure. It culminated in the establishment of its foundations which have remained unassailed by the theoretical and experimental work of succeeding decades. 100 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The devotion of an IA U symposium entirely to the topic of chromo spheric fine structure at a time when models of the spherically symmetric chromosphere are still evolving constitutes a valid recognition of the growing feeling among solar astron omers that the chromosphere cannot be understood independently of its discrete structural features. Network structure, which seemingly borders the photospheric supergranule cells, persists intact throughout the chromosphere and most of the chromosphere-corona transition region. The network is the locus of the bright coarse mottles, and the spicule bushes and is the terminus for one end of the quiet chromo spheric fibrils as well. Additionally, it is the locus of most of the magnetic flux of the quiet chromosphere. It is not surprising, therefore, that current studies of the chromosphere tend to center around efforts to better describe the network phenom ena and to ascertain the physical properties of the network features. Clearly, the supergranule cells and associated network structures constitute a fundamental and singularly important feature of solar structure in the boundary layers. Just as it is now clear that much of the chromo spheric fine structure is associated with the network bordering supergranule cells, it seems equally clear that structural features are almost universally associated with both fluid flow and magnetic geometry. Indeed, many observers claim that the brightness features faithfully map the mag netic lines offorce while still others claim that associated with each class of brightness feature there is a more or less unique fluid flow. 332 pp. Englisch.

But there is an additional debt owed, not simply for the locale but for the very substance of the Conference, to the two Finnish scholars who have jointly authored the present volume. For this volume represents not only the first part of the published proceedings of this First International Conference in the History and Philosophy of Science, but also, most fittingly, the paper that opened the Conference itself. Yet the appropriateness of the paper from which this book has resulted opening the Conference lies far less in the fact that it was a contribution by two Finnish authors to a meeting hosted in Finland than it does to the fact that this paper, and now the present book, comes to grips in an extreme ly direct way with the very problem the whole Conference was from the outset designed to treat. Generally put, this problem was to bring to gether a number of historians and philosophers of science whose contrib uted papers would bear witness to the ways in which the two disciplines can be, and are, of value to each other. 172 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When asked in 1962 on what he was working Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz replied: Several years ago Polish Scientific Publishers suggested that I pre pare a new edition of The Logical Foundations of Teaching, which I wrote 1 before 1939 as a contribution to The Encyclopaedia of Education. It was a small booklet covering elementary information about logical semantics and scientific methodology, information which in my opinion was necessary as a foundation of teaching and as an element of the education of any teacher. When I recently set to preparing the new edition, I rewrote practically everything, and a booklet of some 100 pages swelled into a bulky volume almost five times bigger. The issues have remained practically the same, but they are now analysed much more thoroughly and the threshold of difficulty is much higher now. The main stress has been laid on the methods used in the empirical sciences, and within that field, on the theory of measurement and the methods of statistical inference. I am now working on the last chapter of the book, concerned with explanation procedures and theory construction in the empirical sciences. When that book, which I intend to entitle Pragmatic Logic, is com pleted I intend to prepare for the press Vol. 2 of my minor writings, 2 Language and Cognition, which will cover some of my post-war pa pers. 480 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is an elaboration of lecture notes for the graduate course on General Rela tivity given by the author at Boston University in the spring semester of 1972. It is an introduction to the subject only, as the time available for the course was limited. The author of an introduction to General Relativity is faced from the beginning with the difficult task of choosing which material to include. A general criterion as sisting in this choice is provided by the didactic character of the book: Those chapters have to be included in priority, which will be most useful to the reader in enabling him to understand the methods used in General Relativity, the results obtained so far and possibly the problems still to be solved. This criterion is not sufficient to ensure a unique choice. General Relativity has developed to such a degree, that it is impossible to include in an introductory textbook of a reasonable length even a very condensed treatment of all important problems which have been discussed until now and the author is obliged to decide, in a more or less subjective manner, which of the more recent developments to omit. The following lines indicate by means of some examples the kind of choice made in this book. 216 pp. Englisch.

The work of Ludwig Boltzmann (1844-1906) consists of two kinds of writings: in the first part of his active life he devoted himself entirely to problems of physics, while in the second part he tried to find a philosoph 1 ical background for his activities in and around the natural sciences. Most scientists are much more aware of his creative work in physics than of his digressions on the meaning and structure of science. I think in the present case the reason is not so much that most scientists are usually almost entirely occupied with their trade, because Boltzmann's philosophical work is also concerned with the (natural) sciences. I rather believe that the quality and consistency of Boltzmann's purely scientific work is of a more appealing nature than his less structured considerations on human activity in science and in life in general. 2. I think that it may be appropriate for the readers of this anthology to say a few words on the main findings of Boltzmann in physics, since in the end their 'philosophical' inlpact has been larger than the effect of his later writings. Moreover some knowledge of his scientific achievements can be helpful for the understanding and appreciation of the essays printed in this book, which almost all stem from Boltzmann's philosophical period. Boltzmann was one of the main protagonists - at least in continental Europe - of atomistics for explaining the phenomena of physics. 300 pp. Englisch.

Although I naturally assume entire responsibility for the final text, the latter must, however, be regarded as the culmination of collective work. Huguette Flamand and Fram;ois Lebouteux have together with myself been responsible for the development of the project in all its stages. We have benefited from the contributions of Messrs. Amiot, Antoine, Balcon, Berbain, Mrs. de Boissieu, Mr. Boulanger, Mrs. Castaguo, Messrs. Cousin, Durand, Elie, Guigou, Hautenauve, Hum bert jean, Mrs. Knecht, Messrs. Littoz-Baritel, Malglaive, Perriault, Miss Remy, Mr. Schmidt. With their agreement, their texts, a list of which is given in an appendix, have been integrated into the study without specific mention. Others who have been kind enough, at our request, to assume the thankless role of adviser and critic at various stages in the course of this work are Mrs. Puybasset, Messrs. Caspar, Girod de l'Ain, Migne, Palmade, Pechenart and Sicard-Alliot. I thank them all here, hoping that I have in no way betrayed their intentions and think they will find in this text a faithful reflection of their ideas and the echo of their own concerns. Finally, we have benefited from the many contacts which we were able to make in France and abroad. 272 pp. Englisch.

PURPOSE AND PLAN William Temple was trained as a philosopher and lectured on phi losophy at Oxford (1904), but his concern for labor, education, journalism, and the Church of England led him away from philosophy as a profession. Enthroned in 1942 as Archbishop of Canterbury, Temple persisted in applying his Christian position to the solution of the problems of the day. He will be remembered for his contributions in many areas of life and thought: his work in the ecumenical movement, and his writings in theology and social ethics attest to the variety and depth of his concern, but of special significance is his contribution toward the construction of a distinctly Christian philosophy relevant to the twentieth century. Although Temple did not work out a systematic formulation of his Christian philosophy, the bases for a Christian philosophy are never theless evident in his position. It is the purpose of the present work to enter sympathetically and critically into the major facets of Temple's position and to weave together, as far as is legitimate, the separate strands of his thought into a meaningful, even if not a completely unified, Christian philosophy. The intent is not simply to present Temple's conclusions on a variety of philosophical and theological issues; rather, Temple's position is developed systematically, and the arguments for the conclusions at which he arrived are carefully ex pounded. 324 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -What does 'meaningless' mean On the one hand, it signifies simply the absence or lack of meaning. 'Zabool' is meaningless just because it doesn't happen to mean anything. 'Green flees time lessly' is meaningless, despite a certain semblance of sense, because it runs afoul of certain fundamental rules of linguistic construction. On the other hand, 'meaningless' characterizes that peculiar psycho logical state of dread and anxiety much discussed, if not discovered, by the French shortly after the Second World War. The first is primarily linguistic, focusing attention on emotionally neutral questions of linguistic meaning. The second is nonlinguistic, indicating a painful probing of the social psychology of an era, a clinical and literary analysis of 20th century Romanticism. On the one hand, a job for the professional philosopher; on the other hand, a task for the literary critic and the social historian. Is any useful purpose served in trying to combine these two, very different concerns As the title of this book suggests, I think there is. 164 pp. Englisch.

Many of the current and former staff of Mount Stromlo Observatory (operated by the Australian National Univer sity) have specialized in the study of variable stars and it was with considerable pleasure that Mount Stromlo Observatory accepted the responsibility of hosting and making the local arrangements for IAU Symposium No. 59. The Scientific Organizing Committee was particularly active in formulating the program and comprised Drs N. Baker, P. Demarque, M. Feast, G. Herbig, I. Iben, P. Ledoux, J. Ostriker and E. Schatzman. The aim of the Committee was to integrate the review and contributed papers on the particular instability mechanisms involved, their observational manifestations and their relation to the internal structure of the star as inferred from its evolutionary history. The Local Organizing Committee consisted of Miss P. Petrie and A. W. Rodgers. 218 pp. Englisch.

' These papers, as revised, are published here, most of them for the first time. They reflect no consensus of view, nor were they intended to do so. That such a consensus did not emerge from the conference is not in our judgment a cause for regret; it may rather be regarded as a manifestation of a healthy and desirable plurality of approaches which itself indirectly tells us something important about the nature of the open society. All the papers deal in different contexts and from a variety of philosophi cal and theoretical perspectives with the interrelated themes of openness and the open society. Some of the panelists are skeptical of the capacity of modern industrial, or 'post-industrial,' society, with its heavy emphasis upon technological rationality to foster authentic openness under currently prevailing assumptions about man and nature. 348 pp. Englisch.

In terms of sheer numbers, most of the value concepts of our language are to be found in the area of human relations and of the aesthetic. There are also other value vocabularies, shorter but equally important, for example, the cognitive and logical. These and other objects of pbilosopbical study (for example, the question of 'other minds') deserve the kind of empirical survey that has been made of moral and aesthetic notions, if only to test a priori approaches to them. In the present studyan even more determined empirical approach than that adopted for the first has been found necessary. Once the moral or human value vocabulary has been identified, sentential contexts for the use of the terms readily come to mind. In a study of the language of criticism, however, the vocabulary has first to be sought in the utterances of critics themselves and quoted in sufficient context to make their critical intentions clear. The outcome is that the present study is of great length, about half of it being quotations from critics. The rule adopted for arriving at tbis length go on collecting quotations as long as new types of appraisal came was to to light. 568 pp. Englisch.

The history of philosophy shows clearly that the answer to the question, 'How does science function ' was the conditio sine qua non of any kind of philosophy of science, epistemology and even of logic. Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Mill, Russell, to mention a few classical authors, clearly emphasized the primacy of methodology of science for any kind of philosophy of science. One may even state that analyses of the presup positions, the foundations, the aims, goals and purposes of science are nothing else than analyses of their general and specific formal, as well as practical and empirical methods. Thus, the whole program of any phi losophy of science is dependent on the analysis of the methods of sciences and the establishment of their criteria. If the study of scientific method is the predominant factor in the philosophy of science, then all the other problems will depend on the outcome of such a study. For example, the old question of a possible unity of all social sciences will be brought to a solution by the study of the presuppositions, the methods, as well as of the criteria germane to all social sciences. 460 pp. Englisch.
