Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Oestreich, Tamar K. (illustrateur). This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Why and Wherefore Welcome to our little introductory book! It appears in response to be ginning students (i.e., especially general radiology residents) who have sought guidance with the methodology of evaluating positional rela tionships of the feet from radiographs. Since my stepwise 'how to' technique has been well received both in the Show-Me state (at the University of Missouri Columbia) and here in Ohio, it is offered to you as well. To simulate my conventional teaching method, the informal text has an interactive flavor, which I hope makes it useful for you. Please don't be offended by a touch of simplified walking through of material here and there. After all, this is a 'primer,' not a dignified postgraduate treatise. Comments from readers would of course be appreciated by the author. The majority of illustrations are the result of the collaboration with my dear colleague Tamar, in which she artistically interpreted repre sentative radiographs for you to my specifications. The guidelines I gave her included line drawing outlines of the most pertinent bones, to which straight lines were added as appropriate. As a result certain bones, for example the fibula and many phalanges, are omitted if they are unlikely to enhance the impact of the illustrations. Often, too, the cuneiforms and cuboid remain undifferentiated as one bony element, or only a few of them are drawn, so that attention remains with the key bones involved. 64 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book presents a collection of invited contributions, each reflecting an area of biomedicine in which simulation techniques have been successfully applied. Thus, it provides a state-of-the-art survey of simulation techniques in a variety of biomedical applications. Chapter one presents the conceptual framework for advanced simulations such as parallel processing in biological systems. Chapter two focuses on structured biological modeling based on the bond graph method. This is followed by an up-to-date account of advanced simulation of a variety of sophisticated biomedical processes. The authors provide many insights into how computer simulation techniques and tools can be applied to research problems in biomedicine. The idea for this book arose out of the daily work by experts in their field and reflects developing areas. Therefore, I think the material is timely and hope that the work described will be an encouragement for others. It is the objective of this book to present advanced simulation techniques in biomedicine and outline current research, as well as to point out open problems, in this dynamic field. Finally, I wish to express my thanks to those colleagues who have made this book possible with their contributions. 216 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Through the research on which this book reports, we have been given the unique opportunity to explore the complex nature of two of the most important issues in the lives of adults: identity and intimacy. It is with deep gratitude that we give credit to the 80 individuals in our sample who allowed us to explore these processes in their lives. Our purpose in writing this book was, in some ways, a modest one. Both of us believed that research on the Eriksonian concept of intimacy was deficient in that it was limited to the reports of individuals about them selves. We maintained that this kind of research could provide only a narrow, and probably biased, view of the intimacy development of individ uals. By obtaining complementary responses to the intimacy interview from both partners in a marital relationship, we hope to pave a new path that fu ture researchers in this area will follow. Beyond this methodological advance, we intended that this book's theoretical focus could put a new perspective on the well-trodden path of research on marriage. This more ambitious gaal is one that we faced with some trepidation. The literature on marital adjustment and satisfaction is vast and potentially overwhelming. 176 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is an introduction to Prolog ( Pds. rQgramming in ~ic). It presents the basic foundations of Prolog and basic and fundamental programming methods. This book is written for programmers familiar with other programming languages, as well as for novices in computer science, willing to have an original introduction to programming. The approach adopted in this book is thus based on methodological elements together with some pragmatic aspects. The book is composed of two parts. In the fIrst part the major aspects of programming in Prolog are presented step by step. Each new aspect is illustrated by short examples and exercises. The second part is composed of more developed examples, which are often games, that illustrate major aspects of artifIcial intelligence. More advanced books are given in the bibliography and will allow the reader to deepen his or her know ledge of Prolog. Prolog was first designed in France at OJ.A., Marseille, with a specific syntax. We have adopted here a more common notation, defIned at Edinburgh, which tends to be an implicit norm. At the end of each chapter of the fIrst part, there are exercises that the reader is invited to do and to test on his or her machine. Complete answers are given in Appendix A, at the end of the book. 200 pp. Englisch.

This particular volume on the Recent Advances In Schizophrenia stems from the Third Annual Pennsylvania Conference on Schizophrenia, held in March, 1988. At that international meeting, some of the most esteemed researchers in the field surveyed our current under standing of schizophrenia. Collectively, their presentations capture the excitement of a research field launching into a stage of rapid worldwide advancement. The last decade has seen an enormous refocusing of scientific effort on schizophrenia, directed, in large measure, by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Our understanding of this mysterious, disabling disorder in all its diversity has been enhanced by a host of technologies, including new neuroimaging techniques, cognitive psychology, molecular genetics, and anatomical, biochemical, and molecular neuropathology. The resulting growth spurt in our knowledge constitutes the essence of the conference and of this volume. As the following pages amply docu ment, it has been a decade of great progress, one in which we can take great pride. The science of our field has matured to the point that a major research thrust is now feasible-one likely to have enormous benefits for schizophrenic patients and their families. It is a very exciting time to be in this field and to participate in accelerating its advances. 448 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -In its most general form bifurcation theory is a theory of asymptotic solutions of nonlinear equations. By asymptotic solutions we mean, for example, steady solutions, time-periodic solutions, and quasi-periodic solutions. The purpose of this book is to teach the theory of bifurcation of asymptotic solutions of evolution problems governed by nonlinear differential equations. We have written this book for the broadest audience of potentially interested learners: engineers, biologists, chemists, physicists, mathematicians, economists, and others whose work involves understanding asymptotic solutions of nonlinear differential equations. To accomplish our aims, we have thought it necessary to make the analysis: (1) general enough to apply to the huge variety of applications which arise in science and technology; and (2) simple enough so that it can be understood by persons whose mathe matical training does not extend beyond the classical methods of analysis which were popular in the nineteenth century. Of course, it is not possible to achieve generality and simplicity in a perfect union but, in fact, the general theory is simpler than the detailed theory required for particular applications. The general theory abstracts from the detailed problems only the essential features and provides the student with the skeleton on which detailed structures of the applications must rest. lt is generally believed that the mathematical theory of bifurcation requires some functional analysis and some ofthe methods of topology and dynamics. 356 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Kummer's work on cyclotomic fields paved the way for the development of algebraic number theory in general by Dedekind, Weber, Hensel, Hilbert, Takagi, Artin and others. However, the success of this general theory has tended to obscure special facts proved by Kummer about cyclotomic fields which lie deeper than the general theory. For a long period in the 20th century this aspect of Kummer's work seems to have been largely forgotten, except for a few papers, among which are those by Pollaczek [Po], Artin-Hasse [A-H] and Vandiver [Va]. In the mid 1950's, the theory of cyclotomic fields was taken up again by Iwasawa and Leopoldt. Iwasawa viewed cyclotomic fields as being analogues for number fields of the constant field extensions of algebraic geometry, and wrote a great sequence of papers investigating towers of cyclotomic fields, and more generally, Galois extensions of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the additive group of p-adic integers. Leopoldt concentrated on a fixed cyclotomic field, and established various p-adic analogues of the classical complex analytic class number formulas. In particular, this led him to introduce, with Kubota, p-adic analogues of the complex L-functions attached to cyclotomic extensions of the rationals. Finally, in the late 1960's, Iwasawa [Iw 11] made the fundamental discovery that there was a close connection between his work on towers of cyclotomic fields and these p-adic L-functions of Leopoldt - Kubota. 460 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Emergency management is an essential aspect of environmental stewardship. Its essence is distilled from complex interrelationships which link social, psychological, physical, biological, and poli tical sciences. Because there is seldom an opportunity to illustrate, much less teach, those complexi ties wi thin an integrated curriculum, this volume deserves a warm welcome because it helps do that. Dr. Drabek began his study of emergency management more than a quarter century ago in 1963, and his dedication to the field has led to this monograph. He now is entering an international arena; his most recent studies involve countries in Europe, Mexico, and Canada, as well as numerous locations throughout the United States. His experience is evident in his assessment of organizational integrity which this monograph explores. As a frequent lecturer at the National Emergency Training Center of the United States, and other locations within and outside the country, the perspective he presents in this volume provides the student with an important vantage point. His view is clearly focused on emergency management. However, the lessons and strategies revealed here are equally relevant to management of environmental protection, regulatory compliance auditing (i. e. , environmental auditing), and those other monitoring and response skills prerequisite to being a professional and effective environmental steward. 292 pp. Englisch.

'Why can't you be more like your cousin Ernest ' Cousin Ernest went to the high school for genius children and got all A's, even in French. As the years went by, I lost contact with Cousin Ernest. Then last year, at a family gathering, I met him again. Sure enough, he had gone to Harvard and become a doctor, a radiologist. We began discussing his practice and he mentioned that he performs some fairly risky diagnostic tests. While legally he was compelled to tell patients about the risks they were undertaking, he said that risk disclosure was a useless exercise. 'No one has ever refused to undergo the procedure,' he said. It was difficult to argue with his observation that no patient ever refused to undergo his tests. I understood that the lack of refusals did not necessarily mean that risk disclosure was a useless exercise, but his underlying argument was quite compelling. 200 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Because of the sheer size and scope of the plastics industry, the title Developments in Plastics Technology now covers an incredibly wide range of subjects or topics. No single volume can survey the whole field in any depth and what follows is, therefore, a series of chapters on selected topics. The topics were selected by us, the editors, because of their immediate relevance to the plastics industry. When one considers the advancements of the plastics processing machinery (in terms of its speed of operation and conciseness of control), it was felt that several chapters should be included which related to the types of control systems used and the correct usage of hydraulics. The importance of using cellular, rubber-modified and engineering-type plastics has had a major impact on the plastics industry and therefore a chapter on each of these subjects has been included. The two remaining chapters are on the characterisation and behaviour of polymer structures, both subjects again being of current academic or industrial interest. Each of the contributions was written by a specialist in that field and to them all, we, the editors, extend our heartfelt thanks, as writing a contribution for a book such as this, while doing a full-time job, is no easy task. 168 pp. Englisch.

Since then, its pages have explored in detail diverse technology and products relating to Sun. The journal's technically sophisticated readers are likely to apply the information published in the journal to their work. Sun Technology has been written by technologists for technologists. In the pages of The Sun Technology Papers, you will find an extensive selection of those articles. No other single volume offers you such a broad view of Sun-related technology and products. Yet this sweeping embrace of subjects does not diminish the level of detail in this collection. Short of Sun's 40 pounds or so of documentation, no other single source provides as deep and broad an understanding of Sun technology as this book does. Because Sun is a key developer in so many areas of computer technology, the book comprises four general sections. The first, 'Soft ware,' includes chapters on Open Network Computing, Sun's compil ers, SunOS and SPARC, and the Network Software Environment. The 'Hardware' section covers SPARC in great detail and includes the most in-depth examination of the popular SPARCstation 1. This sec tion also contains chapters on the Sun386i workstation. 272 pp. Englisch.

To separate the daily land and sea breeze cycle and other short-term disturbances from the general wind, the series is divided into a daily and a longer term, synoptic component. The latter is related to the atmospheric pressure field, while the former is studied in order i) to isolate particular short-term events such as calms, storms and oscillating winds, and ii) to determine the land and sea breeze cycle which dominates the weather pattern for most of the year. All these patterns are described in detail and are related to the synoptic component of the data. Two time series models for directional data and a new measure of angular association are introduced to provide the basis for certain parts of the analysis. 248 pp. Englisch.

Object recognition, navigation, and inspection use surface properties ex tensively. Characterizing surfaces at different scales in given data is often the first and possibly the most important step. Most early research in ma chine perception relied on only very coarse characterization of surfaces. In the last few years, surface characterization has been receiving due attention. Dr. T. J. Fan is one of the very few researchers who designed and im plemented a complete system for object recognition. He studied issues re lated to characterization of surfaces in the context of object recognition, and then uses the features thus developed for recognizing objects. He uses a multi-view representation of 3-D objects for recognition, and he devel ops techniques for the segmentation of range images to obtain features for recognition. His matching approach also allows him to recognize objects from their partial views in the presence of other occluding objects. The efficacy of his approach is demonstrated in many examples. 160 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This is the second of a five-volume exposition of the main principles of nonlinear functional analysis and its applications to the natural sciences, economics, and numerical analysis. The presentation is self -contained and accessible to the nonspecialist. Part II concerns the theory of monotone operators. It is divided into two subvolumes, II/A and II/B, which form a unit. The present Part II/A is devoted to linear monotone operators. It serves as an elementary introduction to the modern functional analytic treatment of variational problems, integral equations, and partial differential equations of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic type. This book also represents an introduction to numerical functional analysis with applications to the Ritz method along with the method of finite elements, the Galerkin methods, and the difference method. Many exercises complement the text. The theory of monotone operators is closely related to Hilbert's rigorous justification of the Dirichlet principle, and to the 19th and 20th problems of Hilbert which he formulated in his famous Paris lecture in 1900, and which strongly influenced the development of analysis in the twentieth century. 488 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Ptolemy's Almagest shares with Euclid's Elements the glory of being the scientific text longest in use. From its conception in the second century up to the late Renaissance, this work determined astronomy as a science. During this time the Almagest was not only a work on astronomy; the subject was defined as what is described in the Almagest. The cautious emancipation of the late middle ages and the revolutionary creation of the new science in the 16th century are not conceivable without reference to the Almagest. This text lifted European astronomy to the high standard of knowledge on which the new science flourished. Before, the Ptolemaic models of the orbits of the sun, the moon, and the planets had been refined by Arabic astronomers. They provided the structural elements with which Copernicus and Kepler ushered in the era of modern astronomy. The Almagest survived the destruction of its epicyclic representation of the planetary orbits in the conceptual traces left behind in the theories of its successors. The clear separation of the sidereal from the tropical year, the celestial coordinate systems, the concepts of time, the forms of the constellations, and brightness classifications of celestial objects are, among many other things, still part of the astronomical canon even today. 368 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Etat : Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book continues the treatment of the arithmetic theory of elliptic curves begun in the first volume. The book begins with the theory of elliptic and modular functions for the full modular group r(1), including a discussion of Hekcke operators and the L-series associated to cusp forms. This is followed by a detailed study of elliptic curves with complex multiplication, their associated Grössencharacters and L-series, and applications to the construction of abelian extensions of quadratic imaginary fields. Next comes a treatment of elliptic curves over function fields and elliptic surfaces, including specialization theorems for heights and sections. This material serves as a prelude to the theory of minimal models and Néron models of elliptic curves, with a discussion of special fibers, conductors, and Ogg's formula. Next comes a brief description of q-models for elliptic curves over C and R, followed by Tate's theory of q-models for elliptic curves with non-integral j-invariant over p-adic fields. The book concludes with the construction of canonical local height functions on elliptic curves, including explicit formulas for both archimedean and non-archimedean fields. 756 pp. Englisch.
