Perhaps the most spectacular manifestations of these drug interactions are those that result in teratogenic effects, but the implications of drug therapy generally in pregnancy range far wider than the hazards of inducing fetal malformation. It must also be realised that there are hazards in withholding some therapeutic agents from pregnant women, and these hazards have to be weighed against the dangers of indiscriminate drug therapy. It is often very difficult to obtain relevant information about any given compound in relation to its use in pregnancy, and it is therefore appropriate to provide a handbook which brings together information about a wide variety of drugs in a form which allows ready access for the practising clinician. Rodney Ledward first discussed this project with me some years ago, and it seemed to me at the time that with his background as both a pharmaceutical chemist and an obstetrician that his talents were particularly well suited to this task. In conjunction with Professor Hawkins, he has produced a concise reference book for use in clinical practice, which I feel confident will prove to be invaluable to all those practising obstetrics at all levels of seniority. The book covers the use of drugs during pregnancy, but it also includes sections on the transfer of drugs into breast milk.

It is refreshing to see a nursing perspective in the writing of this text. Throughout the whole book, one can feel a warm and humane approach towards patients with gastrointestinal disease. All these and more are, of course, a result of Sister Morag Ravenscroft's vast experience along with the guidance of Dr Charles Swan. It is a textbook worth reading and relishing. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the last years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and the philosophy of language, the convergence of interest (though not necessarily of opinion) of different traditions upon certain prob lems, and the increasing attention being paid to the history of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems are the most important contributory factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity and may as such be an assistance in renewing the understanding of one's own philosophical problems. In this attempt we decided to consider zinc enzymes, copper oxidases, cytochromes and cytochrome oxidase. The choice is in part due to the great attention that the current specialized literature devotes to these topics, which are now debated among chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, etc . We believe that hydration reactions, hydrolytic and oxidative processes have much in common from the point of view of the reaction mechanisms, the comprehension of which represents a frontier of science. Participants came from the fields of geology, seismology, oceanography, geotechnical and structural engineering and risk analysis. The wide range of participant affiliations included institutes, Observatories, universities, oil companies, consultants and insurance firms. All nationalities around the North Sea were present, in addition to some experts from outside the region. All participants were present on the basis of personal invitation. The idea of organizing the Workshop stemmed from conside- tions, such as: the rapidly increasing material and personel investments and versatility of type of structures in the basin.during the past decade; - the present-day important role Jf the North Sea oil and gas production in the economy of Western Europe; and - the increase of potential environmental risks in the region. Although devastating earthquakes are almost unknown in the area and seismic hazard is not great, the seismic risk grows with the growing size and number of structures in the area. Neuware -Wenn ich ein neues Buch zur Hand nehme, lese ich immer zuerst den Schluß, denn ich habe herausgefunden, daß auch in schwierigen Büchern gewöhnlich Schlußfolgerungen gezogen werden, die leicht zu lesen sind, und das gibt mir eine erste Vorstellung vom Inhalt. So erwarte ich natürlich auch von meinen Lesern, daß sie es so halten! Das vorliegende Buch bietet sogar eine Gelegenheit, die Methode zu verallgemei nern. Nachdem der Leser Kapitel14 überflogen hat, sollte er vorzugsweise die Kapitel 5, 2, 13 und 10 oder wenigstens einige davon (in dieser oder einer an deren Reihenfolge) lesen, bevor er sich an eine gründliche Lektüre macht. Das Entscheidende ist dabei, daß der Leser - an den geeigneten Stellen der ande ren Kapitel - Beweise vorfindet; und wie wir alle wissen, sind alle Beweise, die etwas taugen, notwendigerweise schwierig. Natürlich ist es gut, daß es Be weise gibt, aber ich glaube doch, daß man am ehesten das Interesse an ihrer Entwicklung nicht verliert, wenn man ihre Schlußfolgerungen vorläufig zu gibt, einfach um zu sehen, wohin sie führen, und sie dann genau zu studieren, wenn man überzeugt ist, daß das Ziel der Mühe wert ist.
