Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. First Edition. 172pgs. Black Cloth, Black and White print mouinted on the front cover. Black and white photographs throughout. Light wear on the bottom edges, otherwise as new in mylar sleeve. On May 25, 1961, Bruce Davison joined a group of Freedom Riders traveling by bus from Montgomery, Alabama to Jackson, Mississippi. The actions of these youths challenged and disobeyed federal laws allowing for integrated interstate bus travel. These historic episodes, which ended in violence and arrests, marked the beginning of Davidson's exploration into the heart and soul of the civil rights movement in the United States during the years 1961-1965. In the 140 photographs collected here, many of which have never before been published, we see intimate and revealing portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, and other leaders made by Davidson during those turbulent times. These images describe the mood that prevailed during the civil rights movement with a lyrical imagery that is both poignant and profound. As Davidson bears witness to these historical events, and documents the degradation and segregation that were endured, he gives testimony to the struggle for freedom, equality, justice, and human dignity.

Etat : Very Good+. Etat de la jaquette : No Dust Jacket. First Edition. With plates after Bruce Davison. Covers in plastic protective wrap. Slight wear to spine, covers & corners. ; "Bruce Davidson: Civil Rights Photographs 1961-1965" is a poignant collection that captures the essence of the American Civil Rights Movement through the lens of renowned photographer Bruce Davidson. This volume presents a powerful visual account of the struggle for justice and equality, documenting everything from intimate moments of resistance to large-scale protests and marches. Davidson's empathetic and detailed approach offers a deep emotional connection to the events and individuals who played pivotal roles during this transformative period in American history. His photographs not only depict the tensions and conflicts but also the moments of solidarity and hope that defined the movement. This book serves as an important historical record and an artistic tribute to the courage and determination of the civil rights activists of the 1960s. Bruce Davidson is an esteemed American photographer known for his profound impact on documentary photography. Born in 1933, he began exploring photography at a young age and later studied at the Yale University School of Art. Davidson's career took a definitive turn when he joined Magnum Photos in 1958, after being encouraged by Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of its founders. Davidson is best known for his humanistic approach to social issues, capturing subcultures, and marginalized communities with sensitivity and depth. His projects, like "East 100th Street" and "Brooklyn Gang," are celebrated for their intimate portrayal of American lives. Davidson's work extends beyond photography to film and has been influential in shaping the narrative style of contemporary documentary photography. "Bruce Davidson: Civil Rights Photographs 1961-1965" was part of Chris Steele-Perkins' impressive photography book collection. As a member of Magnum Photos, Steele-Perkins held a deep appreciation for Davidson's work, which exemplifies Magnum's commitment to socially engaged, deeply personal storytelling. Davidson's focus on the Civil Rights Movement resonated with Steele-Perkins' own interest in exploring societal issues through the photographic medium. Steele-Perkins' work often tackled themes of cultural integration and identity, making Davidson's collection a natural fit and a source of inspiration. The inclusion of Davidson's book in Steele-Perkins' collection underscores his dedication to documenting human experiences and the power of photography to influence social change and understanding. ; Quarto oblong; 143 pages Original cloth with pasted-on illustration on front cover.

Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 30 copies, with an original, unique "pre-ambertype" photographic print (made with digital vegetable inks on tree bark paper coated with gum arabic and gold mica), "Millennial Forest," (13-3/4 x 16-5/8 inches), signed, numbered and dated (2000/2006) verso in pencil by Rubenstein, and contained in a black cloth-covered folio. The book is signed and numbered in black ink on the first page by Rubenstein. Hardcover. Black cloth, with debossed title on cover and spine; with photographically illustrated dust jacket. The book and print are enclosed in a black cloth-covered clamshell box with title debossed on lid. Photographic works, installations and text by Meridel Rubenstein. Additional essays by Terry Tempest Williams, Rebecca Solnit, Ellen Zweig, Lucy R. Lippard, Roz Driscoll, Elaine Scarry and James Crump. Designed by Olga Zaferatos Karras and Meridel Rubenstein. 192 pp., with four-color plates throughout. The book measures 11 x 11-5/8 inches; the clamshell box is 15 x 18 inches. Fine. (The book and print are in flawless, pristine condition; the corners of the clamshell box are slightly bumped). From the publisher: "Meridel Rubenstein mixes mediums and metaphors to make art about our tenuous connection to place. Originally trained as a photographer, she combines disparate materials such as earthy palladium prints with cold steel mounts, transparent photographic imagery sandblasted onto glass, video imagery projected onto cast glass, and digital still imagery on floating vellum and hand-coated tree bark papers. A sense of fragility, transparency, and passage in her works underscores a possibility for change. Her complex narrative photoworks and installations derive from a sense of place, personal and collective history, and myth-the landscape of the cultural mind. Nine intersecting bodies of work compose this book. The Lowriders is a series of color photographs of the customized cars owned by Latinos from northern New Mexico. Critical Mass is a collaborative work about the making of the first bomb at Los Alamos. The intersecting of the world of the Native American and the Nuclear Scientist is told through the story of one woman who they met. Oppenheimer';s Chair is a meditation on nature and the shedding of defensive postures after 50 years of the cold war. Also included is a series that stems from Rubenstein's 1997 trip to Vietnam, where she commenced a body of work tracing the trajectories of uprooting and replanting in relation to the Vietnam War."
