Edité par Barnes & Noble / Taschen 2008 (c.2007), Hong Kong/Köln/London/Los Angeles/Madrid/Paris/Tokyo, 2008
Vendeur : ReadInk, ABAA/IOBA, Los Angeles, CA, Etats-Unis
Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine dj. Reprint. [nice clean copy with no discernible wear to either book or jacket]. (Movie Icons) Series (B&W and color photographs) There are certainly better (and definitely bigger) books about Steve McQueen than this small-format tome (6"x8"), but if you're in search of a kind of "essence of McQueen," you couldn't do much better. There's an intelligent introductory essay, "Steve McQueen: King of Cool," by Alain Silver, followed by a "Visual Filmography," which takes up the heart of the book and presents stills from all his films (all credited to The Kobal Collection, and beautifully reproduced in the best Taschen manner). The Chronology, Filmography (alas with just the director's credit, plus McQueen's role) and Bibliography are all quite brief, but that doesn't take away from its pleasure as a pictorial survey of his career. All text and captions are in English, German and French. The original 2007 Taschen edition seems to have been issued as a paperback only; this edition (hardcover with dust jacket) appears to have been produced basically for the American remainder market, yet seems to be less common than the paperback. Go figure.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine dj. Reprint (see notes). [no discernible wear to book; jacket has one tiny closed tear at top of front panel]. (B&W and color photographs) 100+ photos of the iconic actor, taken during the early period of his superstardom, the mid-1960s. This book, bearing a 2008 copyright date, is a larger-format hardcover reprint of a softcover edition issued by Taschen in 2004 (a copy of which is also for sale by ReadInk) -- which itself appears to have been a revised edition (with German and French text, in addition to the original English) of a very similar book published by Arena Editions in 2000, although not acknowledged as such in either of the Taschen volumes. (I cannot vouch for the photographic content being identical with the original 2000 book.) This quote is from the Arena edition: "Claxton, who worked and played with his pal for over a six-year period of time [1962-1968], has captured on film not only McQueen's talent and perfectionism, but also his tender, sensitive side and his puckish humor. The actor rarely revealed his most appealing characteristics publicly, but did so in the presence of his close friend. Along with these photographs, most of which have never been published before, are Claxton's memories and recollections, including anecdotes creating a very personal and new vision of McQueen." The Afterword is by Steve's son Chad. **** NOTE that additional shipping charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book, or for Priority Mail service to U.S. destinations. Limited to 1,000 copies, this is number 196 of 200 artist's proofs signed by Rheims. In 2008 Rheims accepted a private commission to photograph Olga Rodionova, the wife of a Russian oligarch. With the encouragement of Rheims, the one-off commission became a continuing, increasingly more explicit project. Folio. Original red silk boards, titles to front cover and spine gilt, illustration pasted to front cover. Housed in publisher's red silk covered clamshell box with titles to lid gilt. With the original printed packing box. Photographs throughout. Light rubbing to inside corner of clamshell box, otherwise near fine.
