Attractive gilt bordered titles to upper board and spine. Quality paper stock. Ivory dust jacket with a mark to the front wrap and wear along the top edges. Two further small marks to the rear with a professionally repaired tiny tear to the rear bottom edge. Fourteen lovely wood engravings as frontispiece and in the text. Book is as new; dust wrapper clipped and very good minus. A memoir of James Masters and the High House Press by John R. Biggs. In payment for his blocks, Biggs, then a student at Derby School of Art, was given some of Masters' old ATF Cloister type. With this he founded the Hampden Press. This 1983 edition contains additional material. Introduction by Walter J. Partridge. The engravings of Shaftesbury in locations used in Jude the Obscure and other works by Thomas Hardy, such as Gold Hill, the School, and St. Peter s Church, together with a brief description of each. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was familiar with Shaftesbury, which he renamed 'Shaston' in his Wessex novels, though he never lived in the town.
