Paperback. Etat : Very Good. A humorous rite of passage novel set in 1960s Norfolk in the days before computers, but in an era of glorious soul music Off the Mark charts the progress of Mark Barker, who at sixteen years old leaves an all boys' Grammar School with absolutely no experience of girls or, indeed, the world as a whole. Mark's first foray into the world of work is at an office in a time before computers or modern photocopiers or calculators. His first job also launches him into the presence of girls. As a very shy youth who lacks confidence in his ability to attract the opposite sex, he ends up forming attractions to all the wrong girls - for all the wrong reasons. He wavers between the waspish Karen, who breaks his heart with her lack of compassion, the beautiful Pauline and painfully shy Debbie. Unsuccessful blind dates and foursomes only serve to exacerbate the loneliness of this sensitive teenager, as he scrapes through to manhood - luckily his sense of humour pulls him through. Off the Mark brings life in the sixties for a working class family in a small Norfolk town vividly to life and will be a stroll down memory lane for many readers. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. 36-year-old Judith Dillon hasn't found her place in society. She struggles to make and maintain relationships, especially with women. In Carlisle in September 2009, Judith becomes attracted to Joanna. She follows her, finds out about her family and infiltrates her life. By Christmas they are close enough for Joanna to insist that Judith spends Christmas Day with them. However, all does not go as planned as Joanna's mother drinks too much and asks Judith awkward questions about her past. That is the start of Judith's past life catching up with her. Judith stood and watched the scene. It appeared to her that the world has suddenly become silent, a sort of calm before a storm or a picture frozen in time. She turned and walked back to her car where she sat for a few moments struggling to comprehend what she had just witnessed, then she switched on the engine. As she approached the exit from the station car park, she had to wait to allow the ambulance and two police cars through. In another twist, Judith resents Maureen, her supervisor in the cash office of a large supermarket, and is determined to set her up by making it look as though she is stealing money. She quietly takes opportunities to sabotage Maureen's work - even going as far as to seduce one of the managers, believing this will strengthen her power base at the store. She has, however, overlooked something which leads to her being found out. Suspensive and gripping, Judith Wants to be Your Friend will appeal to those looking for an intriguing story with thrilling undertones. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. A kitten is a kitten, but each mature cat is unique. Shaped by experience - good and bad - cats are survivors, whether they have wrestled with the dark forces of nature or nothing more demanding than securing the most comfortable billet on the sofa. Older cats are not afraid to be themselves - not that there's ever any real danger of cats worrying what anybody thinks. Mature cats have had years to grow into their ears and even if their ears don't hear too well, those cats still have plenty to say. Author Heather Cook spent 30 years as the homing officer for Woking Branch of Cats Protection and this has afforded her an endless supply of cats that could variously be described as past their sell-by date, off-the-wall or damaged. This book documents the special felines who have taken up residence at her home (Tresta Towers). Some of these have presented me with significant challenges, but there is no such thing as a bad cat. I believe that animals react to outside stimuli, favourable or unfavourable, in order to survive, says Heather. Madness happens: in cats as in people. It can take the form of harmless eccentricity, dementia or out and out psychosis. In cats it can be a rather attractive quality, only necessitating the wearing of protective clothing in extreme cases. Think of kittens racing round a room at head height, their tails like loo brushes and their ears like helicopter blades. They start off bonkers and it can only get worse. Some cats are born wobbly, some achieve wobbliness and some have wobbliness thrust upon them, by illness or accident. If you love cats, you will love this book. The cats featured are very special and have overcome any number of problems to survive. This is not a dreary book, however, as cats are by nature humorous creatures and there are many amusing incidents along the way. All the stories are true and all the cats are very real indeed. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Have you ever thought your local hospital might be haunted? Did you know the police are sometimes called upon to deal with thieving patients, dishonest staff, and even medical professionals with strange and disturbing sexual habits? Did you know hospitals are regularly and ruthlessly targeted by unscrupulous thieves? All this and more is probably happening in your local hospital, but so far you have been blissfully unaware. Until now! PC Jonathan Nicholas, a serving police officer, has worked an inner-city hospital beat for six years. He has decided to reveal some of the incidents he has dealt with and has collected them together in this book. Weird, shocking, moving, and often amusing, these incidents are a fictional tale based on real incidents and real people. Using information drawn from personal recollection, his police notebook, prosecution files, and anecdotes from staff, patients, and offenders, it is a collection of stories that have never been told before. The book reveals all the behind-the-scenes enquiries and efforts undertaken by this particular hospital police officer, with the invaluable assistance of the hospital staff themselves, in order to ensure such places remain safe and relatively crime-free. Television dramas about hospitals are never like this! A work of adult crime fiction, Hospital Beat is a unique insight into modern policing inside a British hospital and will appeal to fans of humorous I never knew that writing. Author Jonathan takes writing inspiration from Dirk Bogarde. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. How did a region, so long notorious for mere quantity, transform itself into one of the world's most exciting vineyards? And what does it take to make a great wine - even on a shoestring? In Virgile's Vineyard, Patrick Moon explores the world of Languedoc wine. Among the cast of characters that Patrick meets during his year of discovery is Virgile, a young local wine-maker who offers to initiate him into the mysteries of each season's work in the fields and in the cellar. Virgile is passionately committed to perfection, even though his limited means afford him just a handful of hectares and the smallest cellar imaginable. At the other extreme is Manu, Patrick's dipsomaniac neighbour, a diehard traditionalist producing a private wine-lake of unspeakable rouge. With Manu as his self-appointed guide, Patrick embarks on a quest for the revolution's leading lights - a succession of lively encounters with growers as diverse as the wines themselves - interwoven with entertaining digressions into the history of the region's wine-making. Meanwhile the author struggles to deal with his long-neglected French home - an unfamiliar and unpredictable world where the brambles have grown as tall as the olive trees, the water supply has just dried up and there is a ferocious animal under the roof tiles. First published in 2003, Virgile's Vineyard is now back by popular demand as a new and extended edition. As rich in humour as it is full of fascinating information, this book is a great read for any Francophile or wine-lover. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Kenthorpe Working Men's Club in the north of England is in dire financial difficulties. To try and help the situation, the Committee come up with emergency measures, including a top-class act booked for Saturday night concerts. The first concert is a brilliant success; the concert room is full to capacity by 6:30pm and the takings are up by 109%. As word spreads, the number of punters sharply increases. This causes problems for some of the members' wives, as they can't get into the club early enough to get a seat. The club's 'Men Only' room is frequented by a few of the older club members, but Rule No. 57, which bars women from the room, still stands from when the club was built in 1932. The women decide to challenge this as seats are always available in the 'Men Only' room. The ladies' section come up with the idea to make the 'Men Only' room into a 'Members Only' room. Never mind an outdated rule, this is the twenty-first century! The oldies fight against this and a committee vote backs them. In a final push, the women decide to fight for full membership. This is rejected so the women boycott the club in favour of a rival club, The Bluebell, taking all their activities (and takings) with them. This causes a rift between the men and women on both personal and private levels. Local and national newspapers, local radio and television take up their stories, making this worse. A standoff ensues, which ends in devastating consequences. Extremely funny, yet thought-provoking, Barry and Bev will appeal to those looking for a light-hearted tale with substance. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. This is a story of obsession, revenge and justice. James Hamilton meets and falls in love with Lynne Burrows, whose ex-husband Nick is a violent, drug-dealing control freak who will not accept that their marriage is over and continually harasses her, and questions their eight-year-old son Georgie constantly about Lynnes relationships. After Lynne falls pregnant again with James child, Nick abducts Georgie and flees to Florida. James and Lynne trick him into returning voluntarily and Nick is arrested on landing at Gatwick. Hes charged and sentenced to seven years. James and Lynne marry and live a life of bliss for two years, until there is an arson attack on James holiday cottage. Four months later, the police charge a small-time criminal and drug dealer. Despite overwhelming evidence, hes acquitted and never reveals who is behind the arson attack. The obvious candidate is Nick, but hes still incarcerated and the police can find no evidence linking him to the crime. Sickened by the judges decision, James becomes obsessed with getting justice for his family when he discovers that Lynne has been concealing secrets about her past. Together with a private eye and Lynnes best friend, he plans the perfect retribution against the perpetrators. Blazing Obsession shows how powerful revenge and obsession are, and how they can result in fatal consequences. The novel, which combines police procedural, legal drama and amateur sleuth genres, will appeal primarily to crime fans. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Colin Andrews has drawn on his long experience as a teacher, folk performer and Morris dancer to produce a highly original novel that will leave readers with a sense of satisfaction - and a warm smile on their face. No mobile phones, no internet, no mixed sex accommodation and definitely no alcohol on Sundays. A Matter of Degree is set in the early 1970s and follows the comical and dramatic exploits of Robert Kiddecott, a farmer's son from Devon, and Jacob Moses, his folksinging friend, through the three years to graduation at a fictional teacher training college in mid-Wales. Rob's relationships with the fairer sex and Jake's penchant for involving Rob in well-meaning projects lead to bizarre yet utterly believable and amusing scenarios. Will unexpected turns of fate always thwart Rob's amorous inclinations? Why is Jake obsessed with an abandoned observatory? Whatever inspires Jake to get Rob and their fellow students involved in the folk traditions of Mumming and Morris dancing? In what other directions does Jake's persuasive enthusiasm lead his friends? And what key part does Jessica play in their lives? A Matter of Degree is an entertaining, perhaps nostalgic, snapshot of a time now passed, but it is also touches on controversial issues such a racial prejudice, sexual temptation facing young teachers, religious fanaticism and political correctness in a thought-provoking, sensitive way. Anyone who enjoys Gervase Phinn's tales will enjoy Colin Andrews's fictionalised account of the antics of student teachers in the 1970s. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. When Harry Birch is elected to the committee of the Thurston Ramblers, Mrs Olive Jonstone, president and founder, is horrified. In her eyes Harry is not a serious walker, he prefers low-level, fine weather walks within easy reach of pubs and tea shops. Olive however is made of sterner stuff. She relishes the challenge of fell and mountain walks - whatever the weather. Her hero and role model is Mr Wainwright, but Harry sees her as a female version of Captain Mainwaring - bossy and humourless. Inevitably sparks fly between them, much to the amusement of the other members of the club during their walks in the Forest of Bowland, Snowdonia, Teesdale, the Isle of Man and the Lake District. John W. Winter has drawn on his 25 years experience leading walks in the UK and France to create the humourous novel Walking with Harry, which will appeal to walkers, ramblers and anyone who enjoys a good chuckle. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. To love someone so much that you would die for them is a commonly used phrase, but not one that Shay and Ruby ever imagined would become a reality for them. Their lives become entwined when Shay begins a lucrative business partnership with Billy Gower, the partner of Ruby's mother. Billy already owns a nightclub in Middlesex and Ruby has been working for him for several years. Shay loves to work. It's his life. His drive and business acumen helped to make him the success he is. He has spent the past ten years attaining the kind of life he wants to lead - and forgetting those that were spent surrounded by violence and battling demons. Until now, the only thing that was missing in his life was love. Fully aware of the implications of their relationship, Shay and Ruby have decided to keep it to themselves for the time being. Ruby has been living in a lonely, suppressed world since her mother got together with Billy, and they are worried about how he'll react. When their relationship is unexpectedly exposed, neither of them could have ever foreseen or even contemplated the dark consequences they will face. A love made in heaven takes them on a journey to hell, chaperoned by members of the underworld. Fuelled with fear and trepidation, they abscond from England to Ireland and then to the USA, before returning to where it all began and where it then ends. Run provokes a cocktail of emotions that will leave the reader drunk with fear, suspense and empathy; humour and geographical detail are thrown in for good measure. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Good. In 1990, Bill Porter set up the International Communications Forum (ICF) as a body to campaign for higher ethical standards in journalism. By his death in April 2009 the ICF had become a major international organisation. Media Values brings together the writings of 27 experienced international journalists and artists to celebrate Bill Porter's life and reflect on the values that he promoted through the ICF. * Bernard Margueritte argues that the moral leadership provided by men such as Bill Porter can inspire us all to work for higher standards in the media * Fabrice Boule advocates the role of the media in conflict resolution. * Alan Channer stresses the role of the theatre as a force for good * John B Fairfax traces the impact of proprietors on newspaper history * Carol Goar explains how she learned some risks are worth taking * Martyn Lewis promotes solution-oriented journalism * Rafael Marques de Morais assesses media standards in Angola. * Natalya Skvortsova suggests its time for journalists to admit their mistakes * Bob Webb argues that all journalists have a duty to challenge racism. One section of Media Values concentrates on the new ethical dilemmas facing journalists in the age of the internet. Magnus Linklater for instance, argues that, while the advent of the internet and 24/7 news operations are changing the face of journalism, there is no reason why the industry should abandon the principles on which it is founded. Other contributors include John Bond, Malgorzata Bonikowska, John Carlisle, Charles Chasie, Simon Cohen, Gordon Graham, Grigory Gundarin, Henry Heald, Michael Henderson, John Munro, Olga Noskova, Hugh Nowell, Danko Plevnik, Michael Smith, William Stainsby, Faustina Starrett, Tomas Vrba and Hugh Steadman Williams. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.
