W is for Weaver Engraved trade card, clipped at corners. Trade card for John Crozer, a weaver and mercer listed in 'Bailey's Northern Directory' for 1781 as active at Widegate Alley, while 'The New Complete Guide to All Persons who Have Any Trade' of 1783 correctly located his premises at Widegate Street. These seem to be the only records made of Crozier's life or career, apart from his will which indicates that he died in 1793. The majority of Crozier's trade card is taken up with written information supplying the trader's name, address and list of goods and services, but it also displays an ornately framed illustration of a Turkish man drawing a sword. This is presumably a reference to the location of Crozier's sop, which was "at the Turks Head".

Melville was a Scottish diplomat, memoir writer, page and special envoy to Mary Queen of Scots concerning Queen Elizabeth. "At Halhill, Melville wrote the Memoirs of my own Life, a valuable authority for the history of the period, first published by his grandson, George Scott of Pitlochie, in 1683, from a manuscript discovered at Edinburgh Castle in 1660. The most complete edition of the Memoirs is that prepared by Thomas Thomson for the Bannatyne Club (Edinburgh, 1827), based on a manuscript discovered in 1827. Some eighteenth-century Scottish historians doubted the authenticity of Scott's publication. Gordon Donaldson notes in Scott (1683) some editing errors and suppression of the more sinister dealings of English government before Mary's condemnation.".

8vo, [iv] 139 pp. [iv]. Contemporary panelled calf, florets to corners. Raised bands bordered in gilt to spine, red leather spine label in gilt ('COLLIER ON THE STAGE'), publication date to foot. Historical restoration to title page and marking ('4C') to front pastedown, extensive foxing throughout, but a well preserved, tightly bound copy. First edition. Godfrey Bosville's copy, with his ownership signature to [iii]. The theologian, puritan and theatre critic Jeremy Collier [1650-1726] believed it was the duty of theatre to defend societal norms and traditional values, to praise virtue, and to glorify God. He said so, long and loud, in his Short View of the Profaneness and Immorality of the English Stage (1698). The Restoration playwrights begged to differ, battle lines were drawn, and war by pamphlet duly broke out. After a battering from the playwrights themselves (Sir John Vanbrugh chief among them) Collier published this defence of his position -- and largely won the day. For most of the eighteenth century the British stage was colonised by the anodyne and sentimental; only with the advent of Goldsmith and Sheridan in the 1770s would licentiousness and laughter return. This copy bears the ownership signature of Godfrey Bosville [1654-1714], High Sheriff of Yorkshire [1704-5]. Wing C5248.
