Quarto, gray cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, vii, 180 pp. Fine, in a Very Good+, mylar protected dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: Portraits of marine algae: an historical perspective" was undertaken to pay homage to the early workers who studied marine algae and depicted them often with much attention to detail. The scope of this study covers the period from the 1760s to around 1900, selecting authors who included seaweeds in their treatments, either in part or in toto. During this period many voyages of exploration were bringing back collections of plants (including algae) and animals to the museums and universities of Europe, where they were studied and described. By default, it is mostly a Euro-centric exercise. Most of the authors (e.g.), Lamouroux, X. Agardh, Greville, J. Agardh, J. D. Hooker, Harvey, Montagne, and Zanardini) are reasonably well known to the phycological community, but some (e.g., Velley, Bertoloni, Delle Chiaje, and Corda) are less well known. An effort was made to present a balanced representation of the three classes of macro-algae, the green algae (Chlorophyceae), the brown algae (Phaeophycaeae), and the red algae (Rhodophyceae). The works vary significantly in quality, and some must be admitted to not be particularly accurate, while others are remarkably accurate. The plan of this exercise was to compile examples of the depiction of marine algae and to say something about the author, or authors, and to put their life and contributions in the context of their time. The goal of this book is provide both an historical background and also a useful compendium for both the student phycologist and the practicing phycologist as well as for a broader audience.
