Operation Jubilee or the Dieppe Raid (19 August 1942) was an Allied amphibious attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe in northern France, during the Second World War. Over 6,050 infantry, predominantly Canadian, supported by a regiment of tanks, were put ashore from a naval force operating under protection of Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters. The port was to be captured and held for a short period, to test the feasibility of a landing and to gather intelligence. German coastal defences, port structures and important buildings were to be demolished. The raid was intended to boost Allied morale, demonstrate the commitment of the United Kingdom to re-open the Western Front and support the Soviet Union, fighting on the Eastern Front. This is an authoitative and comprehensive account of this battle that was to precede D-Day. Ref A4.4.

Index. DJ has slight wear and soiling. This was written by General Whitaker with his wife, who was a journalist. He rose from the rank of Lieutenant to become the youngest Brigadier General in the Canadian Army. From Wikipedia: "Brigadier-General William Denis Whitaker, CM ED CD (February 27, 1915 May 30, 2001) was a Canadian soldier, business man, and author. Born in Calgary, Alberta and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Whitaker was educated at the University of Toronto Schools and later at the Royal Military College of Canada, student # 2357 in Kingston, Ontario. He accepted a commission, as a lieutenant, with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry in 1937. During the Second World War, Whitaker was awarded the DSO for his achievement in the Battle of Dieppe in 1942. He was the only one of the 100 officers who landed on the beach to fight his way into town and escape unwounded. He won a second Distinguished Service Order in February 1945 for leadership during the Battle of the Goch-Calcar Road. Whitaker joined the Canadian Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, known as the Rileys, during World War II. He was part of the famed tragic raid on Dieppe in Normandy as a junior officer, but managed to capture a casino on the beach, dismantle the Germans firing from inside and lead his men into the town of Dieppe. Whitaker was one of a very few historians to write about divisions and corps, and include the German side of the story, based on primary research. His book on Dieppe contains many nice touches - as all his books do - regarding the lives of the soldiers and officers, personal vignettes, and life-and-times kinds of details.
