Livre
Hardcover. Etat : Good. 620. [4] pages. Index. Photographer's Credits. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations. No dust jacket present. The cover is faced and has wear and soiling. Mildly shaken. Name of previous owner on fep. A personal revelation by the great architect, in which he recounts the struggles and successes of his career and his responses to friendships, attacks, and recognition. Plate inscribed to Frank Lloyd Wright's widow, Olgivanna Lloyd Wright, on the title page by Wright (who died in 1959). She founded Wright's architectural apprentice program, the Taliesin Fellowship, and then created the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Frank Lloyd Wright Sr. (June 8, 1867-April 9, 1959) was an American architect, designer, writer, and educator. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright believed in designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was exemplified in Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture". Wright was accorded significant honorary recognition for his lifetime achievements. He received a Gold Medal award from The Royal Institute of British Architects (1941). The American Institute of Architects awarded him the AIA Gold Medal (1949). Eight of his buildings were inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as The 20th-century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright in 2019. Frank Lloyd Wright exerted perhaps the greatest influence on twentieth century design. In a volume that continues to resonate nearly one hundred years after its initial publication, Frank Lloyd Wright: An Autobiography contains the master architect's own account of his work, his philosophy, and his personal life, written with his signature wit and charm. Wright (1867-1959) went into seclusion in a Minnesota cabin to reflect and to record his life experiences. In 1932, the first edition of the Autobiography was published. It became a form of advertising, leading many readers to seek out the master architect--thirty apprentices came to live and learn at Taliesin, Wright's Wisconsin home/school/studio, under the master's tutelage. (By 1938, Taliesin West, in Arizona, was the winter location for Wright's school.) Th first edition was divided into five sections devoted to family, fellowship, work, freedom, and form. Wright recalls his childhood, his apprenticeship with Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan, the turmoil of his personal life, and the background to his greatest achievements, including Hollyhock House, the Prairie and the Usonian Houses, and the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. This current edition (presumed to be copyrighted in 1943) adds Book Six Broadacre City. Broadacre City was an urban or suburban development concept proposed by Frank Lloyd Wright throughout most of his lifetime. He presented the idea in his book The Disappearing City in 1932. A few years later he unveiled a very detailed twelve-by-twelve-foot scale model representing a hypothetical four-square-mile community. The model was crafted by the student interns who worked for him at Taliesin, and financed by Edgar Kaufmann. It was initially displayed at an Industrial Arts Exposition in the Forum at the Rockefeller Center starting on April 15, 1935. After the New York exposition, Kaufmann arranged to have the model displayed in Pittsburgh at an exposition titled "New Homes for Old", sponsored by the Federal Housing Administration. The exposition opened on June 18 on the 11th floor of Kaufmann's store. Wright went on to refine the concept in later books and in articles until his death in 1959. Presumed first printing thus of this edition.
