Hardback. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. First Edition. THE PLAYWRIGHT AND THE PIRATE. Bernard Shaw and Frank Harris A Correspondence. Stanley Weintraub (Editor) Colin Smythe Ltd, Gerrards Cross 1982 First edition ISBN 086140131X 274pp Hardback. This copy is in FINE unmarked condition in a FINE unclipped dustwrapper. A more incongruous friendship than the one reflected in this correspondence is hard to imagine. Shaw is now remembered as the leading playwright of his time and one of the era's most memorable wits; Harris has become notorious for his near pornographic " My life And Loves", and for a humourless (and disintegrating) sense of self importance. At one time Harris had been one of the late nineteenth century's most visible literary figures, a friend of such dissimilar people as Lord rondolph Churchill and Oscar Wilde. Thew 121 letters in this book spanning more than 35 years reveal much of the private men and become in effect a pair of parallel autobiographies. Ref U5.
