About this Item: Frankfurt am Main, 1591. Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. (1) f. engraved title, (3) ff., 30 pp., (1) f., (1) f. Mendae quaedam (misbound), (2) ff. engraved map, XLII half-page engravings with letterpress captions, (1) f. engraved title to plates (misbound), (12) ff., with half-page engravings at the dedication and the ad lectorem praefatio, woodcut headpieces, initials and tailpieces. Lacking the final blank (unsigned K6) and the rarely found colophon to the plates (unsigned H2), quire K is misbound (see collation note below). Bound in nineteenth-century red morocco by Belz-Niédrée (signed inside upper cover), spine in seven compartments with gilt title and "V. M." monograms (Victor Masséna, Duke of Rivoli, Prince of Essling [1836-1910]), covers with gilt double fillet borders, gold-tooled arms at center of upper and lower covers, gilt double fillet to board edges, gilt inside dentelles, blue moiré silk doublures and gardes, marbled flyleaves, silk ribbon bookmark, all edges gilt. Rare first edition of Theodor de Bry's (1528-98) great illustrated work on 'Florida', in a copy fit for one of the consummate collectors of 16th-century illustrated books, lavishly bound in red morocco with the gold-tooled arms on the upper and lower covers for the Prince of Essling (1836-1959): its 42 copper engravings representing the earliest European encounter with native North American culture are in this copy remarkably fine strikes, richly inked with excellent plate tone. Famously describing a region then extending across much of the southeast of the present-day United States, the work represents the first printing of the narrative of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533-88), which Lawrence Wroth has characterized as "the most informative and satisfactory of all books on the Huguenot colony in Florida [the first attempt by a European nation to found a colony north of the Rio Grande]. The large map, the first to show the French colony, and the fascinating plates of Florida scenes and life engraved by De Bry after Le Moyne's drawings, make this an indispensable Florida item" (Streeter, 1172), and a vivid pictorial record of this crucial period of American history in general, as well as an indispensable work for understanding the culture of the now lost Timucua people in particular. The narrative represents the second part of De Bry's Grand Voyages, a series issued in thirteen parts over a period of nearly forty years, and is one of the most desirable illustrated works for the collector of North Americana, being one of only two parts by De Bry which deal exclusively with North America (Thomas Harriot's Virginia appeared in 1590). Le Moyne, a member of the ill-fated 1564 French expedition led by Jean Ribault (1520-65) and René de Laudonnière (c. 1529-74), describes and depicts the first contact between the French explorers and the Timucua, as well as the establishment of Fort Caroline (near modern-day Jacksonville) and Charlesfort (modern Parris Island, South Carolina). The majority of De Bry's engravings examine the rites and customs of the Timucua, with plates devoted to their religious practice, methods of warfare (including the dismemberment of captives), manner of dress, agriculture, cuisine, architecture, games, marriage ceremonies, and other celebrations. Included here are the famous depictions of the Timucua hunting while cloaked in the full hides of deer, fending off giant alligators, and searching for gold. The final plate depicts the killing of Pierre Gambie, a symbol of the deteriorating relationships with the natives that, along with the Spanish attacks of 1565, ultimately doomed the fledgling Huguenot colonies in Florida. The present copy is complete except for the (unsigned H2) colophon to the plates, which, in any case, is rarely present ("Stevens could not find it in forty of the copies which he examined" -- Church, p. 334), and the integral blank (unsigned K6) at the end. About this Item: Venice, Aldus Manutius and Andreas Asulanus, 1514. Printer's device on title and last leaf verso. Title and text in Greek; headers of preface, register and colophon in Roman type. 38 pp., 1 blank leaf, 294 pp., (1) leaf. Folio. 19th-century half leather over marbled boards, spine gilt in six panels, red spine label. From the library of Walter Ashburner Florence (1864-1936), with his stamp on the title (nearly erased) and on the last leaf. Venice, Aldus Manutius and Andreas Asulanus, August 1514. Editio princeps of an encyclopedia under the guise of a dialogue. A large number of guests sits at the 'Banquet of Intellectuals', representing a.o., philosophy, grammar, rhetoric, art, archaeology, literature and sciences. Described is what may be considered to be the first patents (i.e. exclusive right granted to an inventor). This is the only existent work of Athenaeus of Naucratis (fl. c. A.D. 200), and one of our sources for ancient daily life. Greek and Roman cookery, as well as wines are described in detail, and probably also the earliest known text on cookery and one of the very important "editiones principes" of classical Greek text that Aldus has edited since the beginning of the 16th century. The fifteen existent books (of probably thirty originally) evolved from the symposiac genre of literature. The twenty-one dinner-guests are from the educated social elite, each one representing a different learned field, debate a wide spectrum of topics, such as food, luxury, diet, health, sexual relations, pornography, art, music, literature, philosophy, law, medicine and surgery. As the dinner conversation ensues, each expert cites primary texts in support of their arguments. Consequently, Athenaeus' Deipnosophistou is one of our most important sources for ancient literature that would otherwise be lost: Nearly 800 authors are cited, the titles of more than 2,500 plays are listed, and more than 10,000 lines of verse are quoted. The description of the symposium itself is also exhaustive. Minutely detailed narratives on table settings, vintages of wine, varieties and preparation of animals, birds, fish, fruit, vegetables, bread, and pastries, as well as the names of famous chefs and gourmandises make the dinner-table philosophers our earliest and most important source for ancient gastronomy: The reader learns about Greek, Persian, Roman and Sicilian cuisine. This work also provides important insights into ancient music, song, and dance. Were it not for Athenaeus, much valuable information about the ancient world would be missing. Aldus had already planned a Greek edition of the text by the late 1490's. There survives at the Pierpont Morgan Library a proof-page for an unrealized edition, printed in Greek type 2:114 and containing the epitome of book 1. This present edition, beautifully printed in the Aldine Greek type 3bis:90, has a title page printed in the form of an hourglass. The work is dedicated to Janos Vertessy, a Hungarian studying Greek and Latin under Marcus Musurus, a well-known classicist working in Venice, as we learn from Aldus' dedicatory letter, dated August 1514. - A very nice copy. - Adams A-2096; Hoffmann I, 421-422; Renouard, p. 67-68, 4 ("fort rare"); Vicaire 50 ("magnifiquement executée"); Simon, BB I, 58; Schraemli 9; not in the great gastronomy collections of Fritsch, Oberlé, Bitting, Horn/Arndt, Georg, Walterspiel; Frumkin, "The Origin of Patents", in: Journal of the Patent Office Society, March 1943, vol. XXVII, no. 3, pp. 143 et seq. GRAPHIC ARTS:ALDUS ; CLASSICS ; GASTRONOMY ; N° de réf. du vendeur 32958-344

About this Item: About 60 bound notebooks and about a dozen unbound sheets, many finely illustrated with brush and ink, with colors. [Japan: ca. 1839-ca. 1912]. A fascinating and important manuscript archive of notebooks and sheets, many with illustrations, describing the rules of gastronomic etiquette as prescribed by the Ogasawara School of etiquette, developed in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and still practiced today. The instructions mostly pertain to the ritualistic preparation and serving of the food on a series of trays known as honzen ryori ("main tray cuisine") which was the dominant style of banqueting for the elite from the Muromachi period through the Edo period. It remained the most formal style of eating through the 19th century and is still used today in certain formal ceremonies. For a full account of honzen ryori, see Eric C. Rath's wonderful "Honzen Dining. The Poetry of Formal Meals in Late Medieval and Early Modern Japan" in Japanese Foodways, Past and Present (ed. by Rath and Stephanie Assmann), 2010, pp. 19-41. See also Rath's Food and Fantasy in Early Modern Japan (2010), chap. 3. One of the prevalent themes in the illustrated notebooks is the concept of the "five elements" (the connection to the five organs; air, wind, fire, water, and earth; a tray composed of rice, pickles, soup, vegetable, and a main course; wood, fire, earth, gold, and water; etc.). Many of the albums contain finely drawn illustrations of trays each containing five seasonal festival dishes. Also depicted are knives in ceremonial positions with rich meanings, instructions on the presentations of certain foods on trays (for instance, black beans, kelp, fish, carrots, etc.), displays according to the seasons, the five different tastes and their relation to the five organs, etc. There are frequent notes stating that these notebooks contain secret information passed down to the next generation. Another notebook is concerned with shimadai (presentation trays that resemble an island because of their wavy shapes with elaborate displays). The paper of this notebook contains mica for an enhanced effect. Numerous trays are displayed with illustrations of pickles and lobsters. Other illustrated notebooks are concerned with how to display seafood on a medium-sized dish (these are very finely illustrated), otekake and mizu shugi (beginning of the year festivity displays of food), rules of the 5 - 5 - 3 tray setting with excellent pictures, shiki sankon (three toasts of sake), another album devoted to shimadai, an album depicting a white fish terrine with elaborate cross-sections (kamaboko), an album depicting trays and tools of the ceremony, an unillustrated album contain many menus, an album describing how to ceremonially carve fish and fowl, another album devoted to knife techniques of the Ogasawara School with beautiful illustrations of knives and chop sticks, etc. Another ten notebooks, all illustrated, are devoted to the theme of koshirae (recipes, instructions, and techniques for the preparation of ceremonial meals), the etiquette for eating and drinking, secret cooking techniques, rules for the ceremonial offering of sake, and the rules of etiquette for engagements and weddings. Again, the illustrations are fine and detailed. There are a further eleven illustrated albums concerned with the rules of presentation and etiquette for a variety of ceremonies. Another eight albums, unillustrated, contain menus and recipes. Finally, there is a group of about twenty booklets giving menus and recipes. There is also a group of sheets which appear to be shopping lists. Another sheet is a bibliography of cook books. All in fine condition. N° de réf. du vendeur 6260

About this Item: Philadelphia: G. C. Bingham, 1854., 1854. Single sheet, mounted and framed, (24 x 31 inches). Fine engraved print with original hand color in full. First edition. Engraved by Sartain after the 1852 painting by Bingham. One of the leading American genre painters of the mid-nineteenth century, George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879) created some of the most memorable views of American small town life. Bingham was fascinated by the democratic process and by the ways in which it permeated everyday existence in communities far removed from the big cities. "The County Election" was part of a six-painting Election Series; the other paintings were "Stump Orator" (1847), "Country Politician" (1849), "Canvassing for a Vote" (1852), "Stump Speaking" (1853), and "The Verdict of the People" (1854-55). "Forgetting perhaps that Bingham had a strong political bias of a militant Whig campaigner for state office, it would seem that recent students of his epic paintings on the American voting process have overlooked the subtle but incisive element of social criticism lodged in his famous work, 'The County Election.' Bingham, it seems, had serious misgivings about the introduction of universal manhood suffrage, with its equalitarian impact on American life, and he particularly resented it when in 1846 he felt he had been unfairly deprived of office by the gerrymandering activity of a Missouri political rival. On its surface, 'The County Election' appears to celebrate the new political ferment that Americans from Bangor, Maine, to the Western frontier were experiencing at mid-century. However, read more carefully as a document of social history, this canvas suggests that Bingham, like his contemporary, James Fenimore Cooper, saw the stability and integrity of the American milieu staggering under the impact of a too rapidly expanding body politic and the rigors of a laissez-faire economic system" (Westervelt, p. 46). "Intemperance was also associated with corrupt politics. George Caleb Bingham's 'County Election' of 1852 depicts the customary practice of candidates' serving free liquor to woo voters before an election In Bingham's painting, voters are enjoying their whiskey, with the result that some are too drunk even to stand, all before a banner hanging overhead that intones, 'The Will of the People, the Supreme Law.' Such scenes, describing a purchased and likely inebriated electorate, delivered a slap to the actual practice of direct democracy" (Barter, ed., p. 111). Robert F. Westervelt, "The Whig Painter of Missouri," The American Art Journal, vol. 2, no. 1, Spring 1970. Judith A. Barter, ed., "Art and Appetite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine.". About this Item: Madrid: en la imprenta real, 1802, 1802. 2 volumes, folio (307 x 200 mm) gathered and signed in fours. Contemporary tree sheep, spines gilt in compartments, red morocco labels (slightly amended with small onlays to read "Agricultura del moro"), marbled endpapers, red edges. Joints rubbed, occasional spotting or light foxing, a few small stains, but generally crisp, a very good copy. Half-title to vol. II only, discarded in vol. I. Text printed in two columns, in Spanish and Arabic. First edition. Ibn al-'Awwam (in full, Abu Zakariya Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn 'Al-Awwam Al-Ishbili) was an Arab agriculturist who flourished at Seville in southern Spain in the later 12th century. His lengthy handbook entitled in Arabic Kitab al-Filahah (Book on Agriculture) is the most comprehensive treatment of the subject in medieval Arabic, and one of the most important medieval works on the subject in any language. He is the most renowned of all the Andalusi agronomists because his book was the first to be published and translated into a modern language in this edition, then into French by Clément-Mullet in 1864-67, and subsequently into Urdu in 1927. It was thus for a long time the only source of reference on medieval Andalusi agronomy. Moreover it is one of the few works of this genre that has come down to us more or less complete. Ibn al-'Awwam appears to have been an aristocratic landowner, with personal practical experience of cultivation and land management. He was well-read in the agricultural writings of his predecessors and cites information from as many as 112 authors, especially the Geoponica of Cassianus Bassus, the Book of Nabataean Agriculture attributed to Ibn Wahshiyya, and many Andalusian Arabic authors (the great majority to Ibn Bassal, Abu al-Khayr al-Ishbili or Ibn Hajjaj, all three of whom wrote books about agriculture in the later 11th century in southern Spain, copies of which have survived only partly and incompletely). The work is divided into 34 chapters, the first 30 dealing with crops and the remaining 4 with livestock. A 35th chapter, on dogs, was apparently planned but no trace of it survives. The book describes the cultivation of 585 different plants, and gives cures for diseases of trees and vines, as well as diseases and injuries to horses and cattle. The translator worked at the Royal Library in Madrid. In 1781 he sent a letter to his patron discussing this work, in which he stresses the importance of Ibn al-'Awwam as a source for learning about agricultural methods which could be applied in Spain. The introduction of Islamic methods of agriculture had a profound influence on Spanish cuisine. One of the first innovations achieved by the Moors was the installation of irrigation systems which allowed the harvesting of arid areas, thereby expanding and improving vegetable plantations. The Arab agronomists also introduced natural produce from Asia previously unknown to the Spanish. Many of these continue to be basic ingredients in today's Spanish cuisine and include most spices, as well as produce such as saffron, apricots, artichokes, carob, sugar, aubergines, grapefruits, carrots, coriander and rice. These ingredients remain a firm point of reference for Spanish and Andalusian recipes, featuring in for example pinchito moruno andaluz, a dish normally made with chicken, saffron, cumin and coriander. Another notable example is what is widely regarded as the Spanish national dish, paella, whose main ingredients are rice and saffron. Thanks to the success of such crops, Spain today is one of the main producers of saffron. In fact, along with Iran, Spain produces 80 per cent of the crop worldwide. Provenance: Sir John Sinclair (1754-1835), Scottish politician and writer on agriculture (Statistical Account of Scotland) and finance (vol. 1 with his initialled note concerning the present work to front free endpaper and a note presenting the volume to him in Cadiz to verso of title). Later bookplate of the Royal Agricultural Society of England to front pastedown of vol. 2. See Arcadian Library p. 204. N° de réf. du vendeur 94111

About this Item: Japan, 1796. Large 8vo, pp. [108]; old Japanese "grass" script with Chinese elements, 18 extraordinary double-page watercolor illustrations; sewn and bound in the oriental style (fukurotoji) in original speckled beige wrappers; very slightly worn, preserving the original manuscript label label; a very good, attractive example, beautifully illustrated. An account of a voyage through the Izu Islands, a chain of islands south of Tokyo Bay, including Hachijojima, Hidojima, Arajima, Ooshima, and Miyakejima. Apparently one of three volumes, but this trip is complete unto itself. Apparently this voyage came as the result of an order from the Kansei Shogunate. During this period there were a number of people who traveled at the government's request to record geographical and cultural observations all over Japan, including Ino Tadataka who is known for completing the first map of Japan. Among these travelers was a local magistrate by the name of "Ochu" ("Taichu") who lead an expedition in 1796 to the Izu Islands. With him was the artist Kodera Osai, and it is his art work that graces this spectacular manuscript. The textual account of the voyage, dated April to December, 1796, is also likely his. In it he records excursions to temples (on the island of Hachijo he used the Soufukuji Temple as lodging), recounts his experiences with the local cuisines (he's a fan of sake), takes note of the silk and weaving industry, and records incidents of family life (in one particular household he notes that there were 14 to 15 children, all of whom were hungry). He describes the flora and fauna (but not in scientific terms) and tells of fish, sea turtles, frogs, etc., as well as the local agriculture, mountains, and bamboo forests. He also has an interesting account of a family trying to fix their roof, and mentions that he can see Mt. Fuji in the distance across the sea. He also tells of the costume of the island inhabitants, how they fix their hair, how the women occupy themselves during the day and how they take care of their husbands at night. On the return voyage a storm was encountered and Kodera recounts the rough trip back. The illustrations include a wonderful cartographic illustration of Hachijo, the first island he visited, showing the topography, the villages, trees, a path, etc.; 2 botanical illustrations; 3 illustrations of fish; 3 illustrations of villages showing inhabitants at work and play; a rock lobster; a sea turtle being pulled and prodded ashore by nearly naked natives; two native women (one bare-breasted) before a mirror, as well as other general scenes of the islands and the inhabitants. Ref 8.4 Biblioteca A. About this Item: Willem Silvius, Antwerp, 1576. First Edition in Italian. 201 x 144 mm. (8 x 5 3/4"). [8] p.l., 328 (i.e. 408), [30] pp. (lacking final blank).Translated by François Flory. First Edition in Italian. QUITE APPEALING LATER 19TH CENTURY HONEY BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, covers with gilt fillet border and delicately tooled cornerpieces, spine richly gilt in compartments tooled in the style of Bozerian, with floral tools emanating from a central circlet on a densely stippled ground, gilt titling, turn-ins ruled in gilt with floral corner tooling, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Engraved printer's device on title and 60 FULL-PAGE COSTUME WOODCUTS by Assuerus van Londerseel after Nicolay. Front pastedown with bookplate of James Cowan; front free endpaper with bookplate of Allan Heywood Bright (see below). Colas II, 2203; Hiler, pp. 656-57; Blackmer 1196 (1580 ed.); Adams N-251. Pressed and perhaps lightly washed (but with plenty of strength to the paper and the illustrations), approximately forty percent of the gatherings with small, inoffensive stain at lower outer corner, one leaf with candle wax spot, final leaf slightly soiled, otherwise a fine copy with only the most trivial imperfections, the text consistently fresh and clean, and the attractive retrospective binding very bright and entirely unworn. This is a really excellent copy of a work that Colas says represents the finest and most influential introduction to Turkish costume, not to mention the first study of its kind to appear in Western Europe. This first edition in Italian reprises (in slightly reduced form) the copperplate engravings of Louis Danet, which appeared in the first edition, published in Lyon in 1567. The Royal Geographer to Henri II, Nicolas de Nicolay, Seigneur d'Arfeville & de Belair (1517-83), was ordered by his king to join a number of other scholars on an embassy to Istanbul and to complete a thorough survey of the trip and places visited. The resulting report includes detailed descriptions and intricate engravings of some of the earliest portrayals to reach the West of the inhabitants of Algiers, Tripoli, the Barbary Coast, Turkey, Greece, Persia, and Armenia. Nicolay depicts the clothing of numerous occupations (soldiers, merchants, lawyers) and social strata (slaves, ladies, paupers) along with descriptions of cuisine, manners, city life, and bathing customs. The handsome binding is unsigned, but the design and delicate gilt embellishment of corners and spine compartments suggests that it might have been done by someone like Tout. Previous owner Allan Heywood Bright (1862-1941) was a businessman and Liberal MP for Oswestry. Building on his family's long history of collecting, Bright specialized in esoteric and particularly rare books. His library sold for nearly £5 million at Christie's in 2014. While this book is not extraordinarily rare, it seldom appears in the kind of desirable condition seen here. About this Item: 1899, 24 pp., in- folio et in-4, conservé dans un étui-chemise demi-chagr. rouge, titre en long. Two Unpublished Manuscripts]: All's Well That Ends: EDGERLY, Albert Webster

About this Item: Unbound. Etat : Near Fine. Two handwritten manuscripts by Albert Webster Edgerly, the founder of the Ralstonism Movement, a late 19th Century movement that stressed a healthy diet, questionable science, and the use of personal magnetism to control others. The manuscripts consist of: 1. *All's Well That Ends Well: The Great Story of the Day!* Handwritten manuscript novel. 19 signatures of 24 leaves, each totaling 904 numbered pages. The first signature lacks the first leaf (probably a cover leaf or title page) and the conjugate leaf (pages 39/40). Modest toning and foxing, mostly on the first and last leaf, a few hand corrections, but overall a clean and probably final draft manuscript copy, very good or better. A very long novel described in the first sentence as: "The history of a young lady during her three years course through the High School of Lynn; her first entrance and introduction to the Teachers; her opinion of the school and bright prospects for future happiness therein; her bright hopes clouded and obscured; her struggles for the right; despondency and recklessness, and the final, glorious end which awaited her after all her troubles." An extremely lengthy and melodramatic unpublished manuscript. Each of the 45 chapters (except the last) has a brief or several sentences long introduction summarizing what is in the chapter, which, in addition to the trials and tribulations of the heroine Minnie Marsh, includes such intriguing chapters such as Chapter 17: "George Marsh's visit to the Lawrence Cotton Factory. Death of George!"; Chapter 19: "Mr. Browning 'washes his hands of the whole affair.' Minnie is locked in the Room of Disgrace"; and Chapter 22: "The three telegrams. George saved by Galvanism. Minnie's interview with Mr. Graham. His opinion of her." 2. *A Guide to Moral Elevation; or, Fifty Resolutions Formed on New Year's Day by Lizzie E. Edgerly to be Devotely Kept during the Year 1876: Lynn, December 31 - 1875 To L.E.E. from A.W.E*. This second manuscript is a small notebook (5" x 3.5") with a thin crepe purple cover with canvas spine. Some creases on the front cover, else near fine. Apparently a New Year's gift prepared by Edgerly for his sister. Two page title and introduction followed by 50 handwritten pages, each with a resolution. Most of the advice is whimsical: "No. 6: I will never speak an angry word if there is nobody present to hear me"; "No. 29: I will never stutter while calling the cat"; "No. 40: I will tell the truth on Sundays"; and "No. 44: I will never shed tears when I cry." Edgerly was a lawyer from Lynn, Massachusetts who founded a health club and soon after began to author the first of his several dozen self-help books (mostly under a pseudonym, Edmund Shaftsbury). He was the founder of the Ralstonism Movement, a late 19th and early 20th Century movement that stressed a healthy diet, questionable science, the use of personal magnetism to control others, sexual magnetism and related sexual eccentricity (each man should engage in a probationary marriage with someone the age of his grandmother), white supremacy rants, and various other quaint and/or questionable practices. One of his self-help books endorsed the consumption of whole grain cereals. William Danforth of Purina Mills, who manufactured a similar cereal, sought and received the endorsement of Edgerly for his cereals and renamed the company Ralston-Purina. Two almost unpublished manuscripts by the founder of the Ralstonism Movement. It is certainly likely that Edgerly also wrote the novel for his sister. The novel would benefit from further analysis or study. N° de réf. du vendeur 415740

About this Item: Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Octavo. Figured cloth with leather spine label ("Tour in the North of Europe 1835"). 233 closely and neatly written pages, mostly written on one side of each leaf (although it varies between recto and verso), bound with nicely engraved letterheads and illustrations of the various locales visited and described, some are hand colored, also with a folding hand-colored map of Denmark published by Thomas Kelly in London, 1834 (see below). All illustrations on unnumbered pages. Modest wear to the spine label, text block fallen slightly forward, and hinges partially split, still a nice, very good or better volume, with the interior fine. Authorial Signature of Capt. Kelly dated January 1835. Kelly, about whom we could find little, traveled with "my usual traveling companion Alderman Kelly" on the John Bull Steam Packet to Hamburg. This is followed by a thorough description of their activities and of each of the many localities they visited, with exceptionally detailed remarks on travel, the geography, architecture, population, the paintings and other art displayed in the churches, palaces, and museums, the hotels and their cuisine (or lack of it), weather, observations, and entertainments by the various British consuls. Capt. Kelly's companion, born Thomas Kelly (1772-1855), was according to at least one source, "a Dick Whittington character," a man who had risen from modest beginnings to be Lord Mayor of London and a respected Alderman. After his father's bankruptcy, in about 1788, Kelly was sent to work at Hoggs, the publisher and bookseller, on Paternoster Row after which he became a noted printer and publisher. He became Lord Mayor of London in 1836, the year following the trip described in this diary, with his official mayoral portrait painted by Mary Martha Pearson in 1837. A lovely travel diary filled with rich details and personal anecdotes. N° de réf. du vendeur 85329

(dated 1862), title-page, 20 chromolithographic plates by Charles Parsons after van Lennep, printed by Endicott & Co. of New York; some foxing and occasional waterstain (protruding into some plates and title). RARE. First and only edition of this remarkable album containing 20 chromolithographic plates, one of the most ambitious color-plate books of the American Civil War period (1861-64). The production of this large format album with printed text and plates, was based on the writings and drawings of Henry J. van Lennep, a Missionary in Turkey who returned to the United States in 1861. The book contains an introduction wherein the author acknowledges the valuable contribution of Charles Parsons, of New York, and that of the publisher, Messrs. Endicott & Co., "who was patiently overcome the difficulties inherent, especially in this country [referring to the war], to a work of such magnitude and novelty" The author states, "The sketches are all portraits, and every picture has been drawn directly from nature." / "The one really big chromolithographic book of this decade . . . the art is simple, but [Charles] Parson's hand is obvious in the good lithography, and Endicott's printing is well done for its time" -- McGrath. / "Endicott achieved a rich variety of color which demonstrated the increased technical ability of American printers in the medium" -- Reese. / The large chromolithographic plates feature colorful scenes of men or women in costumes common to their tribe or race, as found in and around the Ottoman Empire and Asia Minor. The plates include six scenes of Armenian peoples, five scenes with Turkish persons, two scenes of Jewish people (one is a wedding) in the Ottoman Empire, one Russian (Circassian) to the north. Included are plates of (1) Turkish and Armenian Ladies (abroad); (2) A Turkish Effendi; (3) Armenian Lady (at home); (4) Turkish Scribe; (5) Turkish Lady of Rank (at home); (6) Turkish Cavass (police officer); (7) Turkish Lady (unveiled); (8) Armenian Piper; (9) Armenian Ladies (at home); (10) Armenian Marriage Procession; (11) Armenian Bride; (12) Albanian Guard; (13) Armenian Peasant Woman; (14) Bagdad Merchant (travelling); (15) Jewish Marriage; (16) Jewish Merchant; (17) Gypsy Fortune Telling; (18) Bandit Chief; (19) Circassian Warrior; (20) Druse Girl. / Henry J. Van Lennep (1815-1889), born in Smyrna (present-day Izmir, Turkey) Turkey, the son of European merchants. In 1830 he was sent to the United States for his education, which he undertook in Massachusetts. " He prepared for college at Mount Pleasant Institute, Amherst, Mass., and Hartford (Conn.) Grammar School. After graduating from Amherst College in 1837, he attended Andover Theological Seminary for one year, then studied with Rev. Joel Hawes in Hartford and was ordained a Congregational minister in 1839." He returned to Turkey in 1840 to serve as a Missionary. There is remained for twenty-nine years. During this time he wrote of his experiences, made numerous drawings and oil paintings. Returning to the United States in 1861, he turned his drawings of Middle Eastern life into this Oriental Album. "Van Lennep was proficient in numerous languages and was also a skillful artist, sketching (in pencil or pen and ink) scenes from his extensive travels. Many of his drawings appeared in published works, which include The Oriental Album: Twenty Illustrations, in Oil Colors, of the People and Scenery of Turkey, with an Explanatory and Descriptive Text (1862); Travels in Little-known Parts of Asia Minor: with Illustrations of Biblical Literature and Researches in Archaeology (1870); and Bible Lands: their Modern Customs and Manners Illustrative of Scripture (1875). He also executed several drawings for Professor Edward Hitchcock, including his Geology of Massachusetts (1841) and Illustrations of Surface Geology (1860)." / "Van Lennep was married three times: to Emma L. Bliss (1839-40), Mary E. Hawes (1843-44), and Emily Ann Bird (1850-?). He had six children. Van Lennep died in Great Barrington, Mass., in 1889." -- Amherst College Archives and Special Collections (where his drawings are located). PROVENANCE: The estate of Susan J. Lyman. About this Item: 12/09/(1937), 1937. 17828. About this Item: Felicie, New York, 1973. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY DALI AND WITH SKETCH OF A WOMAN'S FACE. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, AND A NEARLY PERFECT COPY IN ORIGINAL SHIPPING BOX. "Les Diners de Gala, the opulent cookbook that [Dali] conceived and illustrated, sets out a surrealist gastro-aesthetics that is at once visceral and ascetic, Dionysian and Catholic. [It] showcases Dali's ornamentation of menus from such legendary restaurants as Maxim's and La Tour d'Argent and features the recipes of their chefs. Dali stages himself within the sumptuous culinary mise-en-scene. Les Diners de Gala moves between 'sado-masochistic pleasure', 'acute sybaritism', Rabelaisian scatology, religious ecstasy, and anaesthetic asceticism." (Richard Gough, On Cooking). With 136 recipes in 12 categories: exotic dishes; eggs & sea food; first course; meats; snails & frogs; fish & shell fish; game & poultry; pork; vegetables; aphrodisiacs; desserts; hors-d' oeuvre. Provenance: An important association copy dedicated to Phyllis Lucas, first North American publisher of signed limited edition Dali lithographs. Phyllis and her husband Sydney enjoyed a close relationship with the surrealist artist for several decades. Also dedicated to the noted art collector Ben Fishman. Acquired directly from the heirs to the Fishman estate. Signed and dated (1974) in marker on verso of front free endpaper and with dedication text ("Hommage de Ben Fishman & Phyllis Lucas") and portrait sketch in red ink on flyleaf. Translated by Captain J. Peter Moore. New York: Felicie, 1973. Quarto, original cloth, original illustrated foil dust jacket. Fine condition (with dust jacket extraordinarily bright) in the original shipping box. A remarkable copy with Dali sketch and an important association. Hardcover, original shipping box.
