All edges of the text-block gilt. Re-backed almost imperceptibly. With some nicks, scratches and small patches of soiling to the binding. Fore-corners a little bumped. Mild foxing throughout. A couple of short tears to the plates. Pigment oxidation with some attendant off-setting, notably to the folding map in vol. II. Armorial bookplate of Lord Rendlesham (covering another booksplate) to the front paste-down of each volume. Armorial bookplate of Henry Rogers Broughton, Lord Fairhaven, to the recto of the front free end-paper of each volume. Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was a pioneering naturalist who drew no boundaries around his interests. An inheritance from his father allowed him to cross the Atlantic to Virginia in 1712, and to make return journeys that brought him along the Atlantic coastline and to the Bahamas. He sent specimens back to Sir Hans Sloane, and meanwhile described and drew what he had seen in the unspoiled and unsettled southern part of the American Atlantic. Returning for good to England in 1726, and with the encouragement of Sloane and other members of the Royal Society -- to which Catesby was belatedly elected in 1733 -- spent the next two decades bringing his monumental and comprehensive account to completion. The text, in English and French, allowed the work to reach the widest possible audience in Europe. Although some are by others (notably Georg Ehret), the great majority of the plates were drawn and engraved by Catesby himself. He writes in the preface that he believes the illustration to surpass the description in importance, and it is those illustrations that made the Natural History popular enough to go into two further eighteenth-century editions as well as continental piracies. Catesby's style might seem naïve, but they considerably surpass the stiff -- heraldic, even -- illustrations -- especially of birds -- that had come before. His juxtaposition of fauna against flora, bringing a sense of landscape as well as behavior, was groundbreaking, and of great influence on his successors, especially Audubon. Peter Isaac Thellusson (1761-1808) was created first Baron in 1806. Lord Rendlesham inherited his father's home, the vast Rendlesham Hall in Suffolk, which stood until 1949. The rest of the elder Thellusson's fortune, however, was embroiled in one of the most celebrated and consequential probate cases, Thellusson v Woodford, thought to be the inspiration for Jarndyce v Jarndyce in Dickens's Bleak House. Eventually decided in favor of Lord Rendlesham, it took many years and the invervention of Parliament to resolve. Perhaps the obscured bookplate is that of the elder Thellusson? Henry Rogers Broughton (1900-1973), second baron, amassed one of the great collections of natural history books and art (donated to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge). The present volume was bought from the first part of his epochal sale (Sotheby's London, 18 May 2022, lot 42). Engraved armorial bookplate of Fane William Sharpe, "Student of Ch(rist) Ch(urch, Oxford)" to the front paste-down of each volume, with (his?) shelfmark in early ink manuscript above. A totally unsophisticated set from the collection of Clarence Dillon. Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was a pioneering naturalist who drew no boundaries around his interests. An inheritance from his father allowed him to cross the Atlantic to Virginia in 1712, and to make return journeys that brought him along the Atlantic coastline and to the Bahamas. His juxtaposition of fauna against flora, bringing a sense of landscape as well as behavior, was groundbreaking, and of great influence on his successors, especially Audubon. Fane William Sharpe (d. 1711) was Member of Parliament for Callington (Cornwall) 1756-1771. His father John, whose seat he took in 1756, was an agent in the West Indies; perhaps this is the source of the younger man's interest in the flora and fauna of this part of the Atlantic. The volumes come from the estate of Clarence Dillon, the Polish-born American titan of finance (he outbid J.P. Morgan for Dodge, and merged it with Chrysler). Dillon was a Francophile, whose name lives on in Domaine Clarence Dillon, which includes Château Haut Brion. His estate in Far Hills, Dunwalke, was sold by Princeton University in 2001. 12 parts in 6 volumes. Folio (18 x 10 6/8 inches). Half-titles. 12 title-pages with engraved vignettes, 432 EXCEPTIONALLY FINE engraved plates with original hand-colour, some HEIGHTENED IN GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE to reflect the metallic sheen of fish scales. Contemporary tree calf with the arms of the Duchesse de Berry (the arms of France and Spain) stamped in gilt on each cover, all edges gilt (foot of spine of volume III chipped with minor loss, other extremities with minor scuffing). Provenance: with the supra libros of Maria Carolina Ferdinanda Luisa, the Duchesse de Berry (1798-1870) on each cover; Belgian Royal Library. "the finest illustrated work on fishes ever produced" (Nissen) THE DUCHESSE DE BERRY'S COPY of the first edition in French, published contemporaneously with the German edition. A FINE AND ATTRACTIVE, COMPLETE COPY OF BLOCH'S MONUMENTAL WORK. Bloch was a German medical doctor and naturalist. He is generally considered one of the most important ichthyologists of the 18th century and is best known for his encyclopedic work in ichthyology. The drawings were taken from Bloch's collection of some 1500 fish, the largest collection of its time, which he put together from purchases made at home and from returning travellers and missionaries from all over the world including Sir William Hamilton in Naples. ". the finest illustrated work on fishes ever produced. The plates, by a variety of artists and engravers, are outstandingly coloured, and are heightened with gold, silver, and bronze to produce the metallic sheen of fish scales" (Nissen). From the distinguished library of the Duchesse de Berry, daughter of the future King Francis I of the Two Sicilies and his first wife Maria Clementina of Austria. In 1816 she married Charles Ferdinand d'Artois, Duc de Berry, the heir to the French throne. Only the year before his uncle Louis XVII had been restored to the French throne, and on this death in 1824, the Duc's father became the last Bourbon monarch, as Charles X. tragically the Duc did not inherit the crown, but was assassinated at the Paris Opera in 1820. The Duc and Duchesse's only son, the Comte de Chambord, "the miracle baby" was born seven months after his father's murder and became the Legitimist Bourbon heir. During this period the Duchesse became patron to the world's greatest botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute. Not only did she support him with the purchase of his celebrated 170 watercolours of 'Roses' on vellum, but she also obtained for him the post of 'maitre de Dessin' at the Museum of Natural History in 1824, even becoming one of his students. (Nissen) Nissen ZBI 416; Wood p. 244. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

6 volumes. Folio (18 x 13 inches). 1008 fine hand-coloured plates, drawn and engraved by Franz Nicolaus Martinet under the supervision of Edme Louis d'Aubenton (EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN AND BRIGHT). Contemporary diced green morocco gilt, the spines in seven compartments with six raised bands, title "Oiseaux Enluminee" in the second, and plate count in the third, others decorated with fine gilt tools, all edges gilt (extremities scuffed). LARGE-PAPER ISSUE OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND MOST IMPORTANT LANDMARKS IN THE HISTORY OF ORNITHOLOGY. THIS COPY IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM, ISSUED WITHOUT TEXT. "ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL BIRD BOOKS FROM THE COLLECTOR'S POINT OF VIEW" (Fine Bird Books). In 1765 Daubenton the younger, at Buffon's instigation, commenced the publication of the plates. By 1780 or a little later 42 cahiers (with 1008 plates) had appeared, in no particular order, and without text. The intention was that the plates should illustrate the ornithological volumes of Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle générale et particulière" (1749-1804): this proved impossible because of the limited edition of the coloured plates. A new set of 262 black-and-white plates was prepared for the nine ornithological volumes of the "Natural History. The 35 non-ornithological plates feature 6 of Beetles, 21 of Butterflies and Moths, 3 of Toads and Lizards, 4 of Coral and 1 of Mantidae. Being supplementary, they are missing in many copies. Anker 76-77; Fine bird books p 69 (with 3 stars); Mengel 645; Nissen IVB 158; see Zimmer pages 104-106. Catalogued by Kate Hunter (L64F21H-I).

10 volumes, folio (18 1/2 x 13 1/4 in.; 464 x 343 mm). 973 fine hand-colored plates drawn and engraved by François Nicolaus Martinet under the supervision of Edme Daubenton, text within decorative borders. Contemporary half red straight-grained morocco (extremities scuffed, bookplates removed from the front paste-downs). Provenance: George M. Pflaumer. "Ranks still as one of the most important of all bird books from the collector's point of view" (Fine Bird Books). First edition, large paper issue, bound as often found without the 35 extra plates of animals, insects, and reptiles designed to illustrate ornithological volumes of Buffon's monumental "Histoire naturelle generale" (1749-1804). Buffon was appointed keeper of the "Jardin du Roi", later the "Jardin des Plantes", and the collection connected with it, the "Cabinet du Roi" in 1739. He augmented the collection of birds exponentially, increasing it to more than 800 species gathered from all four corners of the globe. In 1765 at Buffon's direction, Martinet began drawing and painting the collection, and engraved the plates under the supervision of Edme Daubenton. In1770 the first volume devoted to birds was published: "Its popularity was primarily assured by Buffon's great literary ability which allowed him to present even the most difficult topics in such sparkling style, in such a universally understandable form, and so fascinating a manner that, as was said, even ladies found amusement in reading about them.the special merit of the work is principally due to the fact that. it was the first to create interest in Nature and natural history in wide circles" (Anker). Buffon's "Oiseaux." was ultimately issued in four formats: the large and ordinary paper folio sets were issued with hand-colored plates by and after Francois Martinet. Quarto and twelve-mo issues were also produced, illustrated with a series of black and white plates drawn by de Seve. Anker 76; "Fine Bird Books" 83; McGill/Wood 267; Nissen IVB 158; Zimmer 104-106. couverture souple. - s.l.

His work, Memoires pour servir a l'Histore des Plantes, which was intended to form the introductory volume to this series, appeared in 1675 and contained thirty-nine plates by Robert. In it Dodart lamented the fact that none of the engravings could be in colour, but at least, he assured the reader, all the illustrations in the new series would be drawn directly from life, the artist making every effort to present the plants in their actual dimensions" (Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi An Oak Spring Flora p 168). "Putting to one side his regular activity of flower painting on vellum in order to concentrate on this project, Robert managed to produce an enormous number of engravings [but at the time of his death the work was incomplete] . Hardcover. Etat : Very good. First. First folio edition. Amsterdam: J.F. Bernard, 1730. Folio (20 1/8"x 13 15/16", 337mm x 511mm). [Full collation available.] With 184 hand-colored engraved plates on 94 leaves (4 with a single plate, 90 with two), numbered (single plates indicated with an asterisk): [1*] (general title-page), 1.I, 2.I, II-L*, 1.LI, 2.LI, LII-C*, CI-CLXIX CLXXI CLXXIII-CLXXXIV*. Bound in contemporary half speckled calf over speckled boards (re-backed, with the original back-strip laid down). On the spine, five raised bands. Title gilt to the second panel. Re-backed, with the original back-strip laid down. Scuffed generally and worn at the edges, with some skinning. End-papers creased, with the front end-papers laid in loose. The odd spot of foxing, but internally quite a good copy. Minor worming to the lower margin from the half-title (Ï 1) through D2. Pigment oxidation to the verso of most plates. Bookplate of Bob Luza to the front free end-paper. Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) came from a distinguished Swiss-German family; her father was Matthäus Merian and her grandfather Johann Theodor de Bry. In 1685, Merian moved with her two daughters and her mother into a Labadist community at Waltha Castle. She was so inspired by the Wunderkammer of Cornelis van Sommelsdijck, who had been governor of Surinam (Dutch Guiana or Suriname), at the castle, that she sailed for South America with her younger daughter Dorothea. There she studied, drew and collected specimens for nearly two years, focusing intently on the metamorphoses of insects there. Indeed, metamorphic insects were the principle subject of her lifelong study and publication, even before her time in Surinam; the first edition of the first part of the present work (with only European insects) was published in German in Nuremberg in 1679 as Der Raupen. It was issued in Dutch 1713-1714 as Der Rupsen. with the addition of a second part. Merian suffered a stroke in 1715 but completed the work with its third part, aided by her daughter Dorothea Maria Graff and incorporating additional material from Surinam sent by her elder daughter Johanna Helena Herolt, which was published in 1718 (after Merian's death) as the Erucarum ortus in three parts, with 150 plates in total. The work was translated into French by Jean Marret in 1730 as Histoire des insectes de l'Europe -- it now being necessary to distinguish Merian's European work from her South American. That 1730 edition was published in folio (with the same small plates, usually 2 or 4 to a page) with, according to Nissen, a total of 186 plates, including "18 nouvelles planches, dessinées par la même dame" and also in Dutch -- as the present item. Nissen disregards that two numbers, CLXX and CLXXII, are not independent plates, bringing the total plate-count to 184 (as Landwehr confirms). Four of those plates are title-wreaths (the first part-title being used as a general title, then pll. 1.LI, CI and CLXXI as the remaining three). The numbers are a little difficult to square; the fourth part, whose plates are rather larger -- ca. 203mm x 146mm -- than those of the original three parts -- ca. 154mm x 121mm, adds 31 plates (title + 30) and not 18. Bob Luza (1893-1980) was a Jewish physician in Amsterdam who amassed a large library, notably emblem books and other illustrated material. His large library was disbursed in a two-day sale by van Gendt in 1981. Cf. Hunt 483; Landwehr, Dutch Books 136 (46 leaves of plates, viz. 4 plates per leaf); Nissen, BBI 1342.

Magnificent monumental work and splendid presentation copy with arms of Louis XV on covers, glorifying the reign of Louis XIV, King of France. The plates were engraved by various engravers i.a. Bonnard, Van Schuppen, Bauduins, etc., after paintings by Van der Meulen (Brussels 1632-Paris 1690), particularly known for his scenes of military campaigns and conquests; he also created designs for prints and cartoons for tapestries of the Gobelins manufactury. He followed the King in all his travels and military campaigns and his paintings helped to build the propagandistic image of the French king as the "Roi Soleil". Printed on strong paper in strong and neat impressions, the plates were, on initiative of Colbert, Minister of Finance under the Rule of Louis XIV, integrated in the series "Cabinet du Roi", often used as royal presents. Present are besides a full page magnificent portrait of the King engraved by Van Schuppen after N. de Largillière, large folding double or triple very animated plates printed on 2 leaves depicting royal travels, hunts or military actions with views of cities, castles or neighbourhood of i.a. In January 1716, while in seclusion for the birth - then tragic death - of her second natural child, the twenty-year-old widowed dedicatee, Marie-Louise-Élisabeth d'Orléans, Duchess of Berry (1696-1719), received from the talented and fashionable painter J.-B. Oudry this ingenious suite of picture riddles of love, seduction and morality(!). He created and designed the forty playful prints based on prose and verse solutions of his own composition to amuse and distract the young duchess and her intimates at so difficult a time. Then much in vogue at the French royal court headed by Philippe II Duke d'Orléans, Regent of France and Marie-Louise-Élisabeth's father, rebuses combine elements of emblems, heraldry, cryptography, mnemonics, hieroglyphs and personal pictorial marks of ownership. The present rebus set incorporates individual letters, syllables and, on occasion, entire words into the image series in a nod to logogriphs. A few rhymes are topical, i.a., the Regent's rule (no. 2), the Persian ambassador's visit to Paris (no. 4) and the Queen of England (no. 11). One is literary, built around Corneille, Racine, Molière, Boileau and Descartes (no. 19), and others are just silly, featuring cats eating beef spleen (no. 10), the contradictory effects of wine (no. 28) and nonsense rhymes (no. 38). Nearly all the remainder concern romance, its rewards, pains and pitfalls. Oudry offered this oblong album for sale at his house, though apparently most copies were distributed by the duchess as the picture puzzles were "in-jokes of a particular social group" (Barber). I have traced the following examples - 1) BnF Dépt. des estampes Db 23 (1) (leaves cut out and mounted on folio leaves in a later album with other Oudry cuts; 40 plates only), 2) BnF Dépt. des estampes KH MAT-5 (leaves cut out and mounted on folio leaves in a later album with other games; number of plates not known), 3) BnF 8-H-28477 (later calf-backed drab boards, lacking plates 2-3 and the final leaf of solutions; not colored; La Vallière-Paulmy ex.), 4) Destailleur-Rothschild (Waddesdon Manor; lacking the four solution leaves; colored), 5) Morgand (without the dedication and solution leaves - ?the present example; colored), 6) that offered here. In good condition (some hand soiling, a few ink spots), Madame de Prime and Riberac in early manuscript, bookplate of the Belgian collector Fernand J. Nyssen (1893-1964). Hardcover. Etat : Very good. First. LARGE-PAPER COPY, UNTRIMMED. First edition. Paris: chez l'Auteur, 1781. Folio (19 1/4" x 11 15/16", 494mm x 304mm): [chi]1. 1 leaf, pp. [2] (2pp. explanation of plates). With 101 engraved plates: an engraved title and 100 engraved botanical plates with hand-color. Bound in contemporary brown marbled boards, (re-)backed with cream paper. On the spine, author and title ink manuscript to a paper label. All edges of the text-block untrimmed. Re-backed, with some rubbing to the covers and wear at the extremities. Spine-label chipped at the front hinge. Front free end-paper, plate list and rear free end-paper foxed. Plates quite fresh, albeit some tanned or foxed at the very peripheries. An earlier description (of this volume?) taped to the front paste-down. An almost-unsophisticated example, tall and clean. Pierre Joseph Buc'hoz (his father wrote "Bughaut;" 1731-1807) shifted course from Classics to law and finally to medicine, with a particular interest in botany. His great stepping-stone was the appointment in 1759 as personal doctor to StanisÅ aw LeszczyÅ ski, twice King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania and, after the marriage of his daughter Marie LeszczyÅ ska to Louis XV -- queen consort for over 40 years -- Duke of Lorraine. With that lofty title he was free to publish widely, including a fourteen-volume Histoire naturelle de la France. As botanical demonstrator at the royal medical college at Nancy, he was exposed not only to plant specimens native to Europe but also to those brough in from abroad. The unique manuscript in the library of the Emperor of China is probably a fabrication, but the plates of the present work -- its only letterpress is the list at the end -- are most certainly in the Chinese style. Blunt claims that the "early plates were actually painted in China," though it is not clear with what authority. It is curious that Buc'hoz frames an essentially decorative work as a collection of medical plants, especially when 60 (nos. 11-71) of the plates were first published in the generalist Centurie de Planches. begun in 1775. The Wreck of the Metta Catharina, Garbett G. & Skelton I. 1987 et The International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Blackwell, Oxford 2010, vol. 39, no2, pp. 235-257 [23 pages (article)]). Very nice set. Complet set of the best editions. "Now, this book has quite an amazing story : In 1786, the Die Frau Metta Catherina brigantine left St. Petersbourg with a cargo of hemp and leather. The latter was no ordinary leather, but Russia leather its typical crosshatched grain, tanned with willow bark and curried with birch oil what the New York Times magazine calls a top-of-the-line luxury. This leather was renown for its unique perfume, its resistance to water and, as it seems, for being insect-repellent. Captain Twedt who was the skipper of the Die Frau Metta Catherina back in 1786, was aiming to Genoa. But he never went beyond Plymouth Sound. Torn from her anchorage by a sudden storm, the Metta Catherina eventually sank to a depth of about 100 feet. The vessel and cargo entirely lost, read a contemporary article; crew saved. The cargo, including rolls of Russia leather, quietly remained underwater for the following 187 years, until some members of a local diving club discovered the ship. Brought to the surface, the rolls of leather proved to be somehow well preserved. Mr. Brown, who happened to commercialize them, stated : ''The hides on the outer edges of the rolls, as well as others that were disturbed as the vessel sank, had all deteriorated badly. The inner hides in most of the rolls were in a remarkable state of preservation, protecte.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. 216 SPLENDID HAND-COLOURED C18TH ENGRAVING OF FISHES. BLOCH, Marcus Elieser. FIRST FRENCH EDITION. Folio (leaves ca. 46x28; binding ca. 47.5x29.5). Parts 1-6 bound in 3 volumes, half-title and title to each part, with elaborate engraved vignette illustrating fishing scenes to each title by D. Berger after F.C.W. Rosenberg. Complete with 216 fine hand-coloured engraved plates, occasionally heightened with gold, silver and bronze pigments to reproduce the shiny reflective scales of fish. In clean condition, crisp and with good margins. Bound in contemporary full Russia with Greek key gilt border decoration to outer edges; skilfully rebacked, gilt decorated spines. Marbled endpapers. An excellent copy. Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723-1799) was a German doctor and naturalist. This is a remarkable copy of the first six parts of his masterpiece on ichthyologie (the science of fishes), which Brunet defined the most beautiful that we have about that part of natural history . First published the same year in German in a quarto edition, this much larger and finer second edition of Bloch s work was translated into French by J.-C. Laveaux. Nissen described it as the finest illustrated work on fishes ever produced. The plates, by a variety of artists and engravers, are outstandingly coloured, and are heightened with gold, silver, and bronze to produce the metallic sheen of fish scales. The engravings were based on drawings from the author's own collection, which included around 1500 items. His was among the most extensive collections of illustrations devoted to ichthyologie in private hands at the time. The second 6 parts (7-12) of this monumental set in 12 parts containing a total of 432 plates were finished in 1797. Although some copies sold in the book trade and copies in public institutions may show a frontispiece portrait of the author, the present copy is nevertheless complete, since it was issued during the first impression. In fact, we have reason to believe that the portrait was added only in the second impression of these first six parts. Furthermore, this work can be considered complete as it is, because on the title-page of the sixth part, published in 1788, is written sixth and last part . 20 parts in 2 volumes, folio. (18 5/16 x 12 1/2 inches). Twenty engraved titles printed in red, yellow, blue or black, and twenty engraved lists of the plates. 200 plates (zoological [54], ornithological [26], botanical [60], and mineralogical [60]), each present in two states (black-and-white and beautifully hand coloured), for a total of 400 plates. Contemporary red morocco gilt in the style of Derome, spines with raised bands in eight compartments, inner dentelles, gilt edges, blue endpapers, First edition, among the finest natural history encyclopaedias of the eighteenth century. "This collection of altogether 400 plates (200 coloured) was published in 20 decades, and contains figures of the rarest and most remarkable, and most interesting phenomena of the three kingdoms of nature, each part being devoted to one of them" (Anker). Considered the principal work of Buc'hoz, the magnificent plates were designed and engraved by the leading artists and engravers of the 18th century. They include Jean Baptise Desmoulins, Jac de Favanne, and Guil. De Favanne; Claude Mathieu Fessard, who engraved the plates for many books of Buchoz, C. Baquoy, Dupin fils, J. Mesnil, I. Robert, F. Lucas, Jac. Julliet. Of special interest are the drawings of Chinese plants executed by native artists. Many of these plants are signed "Peint a la Chine", and much of Buchoz's other work also has a distinctly oriental flavor. Pierre Joseph Buc'hoz (1731-1807) born in Metz, was appointed physician in ordinary to Stanislaus, King of Poland, but his driving interest was in natural history. Over the course of his career he published over 300 volumes, in addition to a great number of papers and dissertations. Among his accomplishments were the identification of many new plants which Louis XV ordered to be cultivated in the Jardin du Trianon. With an article on Birds of Paradise by Forster. Some Account of London 1793. The History of the Parishes of Whiteford and Holywell 1796. The Literary Life of the late Thomas Pennant, Esq. by Himself 1793. Thomas Pennant (1726-1798) made good use of his pen as a natural historian, topographer, antiquary, and scientist. He oversaw every aspect of the publication of his work, even personally selecting illustrators. His powers of observation as a naturalist were used to equal effect as a traveller and he is regarded as the greatest Welsh travel writer of the eighteenth century. Johnson proclaimed him, "the best traveller I ever read; he observes more things than anyone else does" (Oxford DNB, 2007). Besides his Tours, he published widely on natural history subjects from all over the world, gathering information from a number of primary sources which, as a highly respected member of the London scientific community, he was well placed to do. The sheer scope of his endeavour is truly remarkable, he touched directly on Australia and New Zealand. His Genera of Birds, a systematic listing of ninety-five species according to the Linnaean system of classification, lists two birds as dwelling in New Holland. Pennant was an associate and friend of Joseph Banks, with Banks giving Pennant the Australian birds that were in his collection. Joseph Banks brought back on Cook's first voyage a Rainbow Lorikeet, the first live bird from the east coast of Australia to be seen in England. This bird was the possession of Pennant and drawn from life by Pennant's man servant Moses Griffiths. He is recognised as the "leading zoologist and antiquary of his time" (Whittell 1954, p. 581). In 1790 Latham named 'Psittacus pennant' in his honour. BINDING: L. Staggemeier and Samuel Welcher were succesful German emigre binders based in London and most active between 1799 and 1810. The quality of their work ranks them amongst the best binders of their time and they are represented in many leading book collections.

Hardcover. Etat : Very good. First. AN UNRECORDED IMPRINT OF MERIAN'S EUROPEAN INSECTS -- PURCHASED BY THE COUNTESS OF HADDINGTON IN 1795. Paris: Huquier[, ca. 1730-1745.] Quarto (10 ¾" x 8 7/16", 273mm x 214mm): with 187 engraved plates, including four part-titles (1.I, 1.LI, CI and an unnumbered plate following CLI) and 180 natural-historical plates; all plates numbered: 1.I, 2.I, II-L, 1.LI, 2.LI, LII-CLI, [1], CLII-CLXIX CLXXIII-CLXXXIV. Bound in contemporary speckled vellum. On the spine, five raised bands. Title and author gilt to calf in the second panel. All edges of the text-block glazed red. Front board splayed, with the paste-downs coming up at the fore. Fore-corners rubbed. A very little foxing and soiling throughout, heavy on four leaves (pll. XXIV, XXV, CIX and CXXXVI). Graphite doodles to the lower margin of pl. LXVII. Despite the gap in numeration, all plates are present (see below). Ownership inscription to the recto of the front paste-down: "The Gift of Sophia Countess/ of Haddington to the Library/ at/ Tynninghame/ 1795". Price note ("£4=2"), seemingly in the same hand, to the first part-title page. The first edition of the first part of the present work (with only European insects) was published in German in Nuremberg in 1679 as "Der Raupen. . ." It was issued in Dutch 1713-1714 as "Der Rupsen. . ." with the addition of a second part. Merian suffered a stroke in 1715 but completed the work with its third part, aided by her daughter Dorothea Maria Graff and incorporating additional material from Surinam sent by her elder daughter Johanna Helena Herolt, which was published in 1718 (after Merian's death) as the "Erucarum ortus" in three parts, with 150 plates in total. The work was translated into French by Jean Marret in 1730 as "Histoire des insectes de l'Europe." That 1730 edition (Nissen 1342) was published in folio (with the same small plates, usually 2 or 4 to a page) with a total of 186 plates, including "18 nouvelles planches, dessinées par la même dame" and also in German -- as De Europische Insecten -- with the same numeration as in the present work, viz. I-CLXXXIV with pl. I and LI doubled. The numeration of the plates of the 1730 edition skips nos. CLXX and CLXXII, and pl. CLXXI is, bizarrely, the fourth-part title, some twenty plates into the fourth part (those plates being considerably larger -- ca. 203mm x 146mm -- than those of the original three parts -- ca. 154mm x 121mm). Thus, the present item's unnumbered plate after CLI corresponds to CLXXI in the 1730 edition, and, there being neither CLXX nor CLXXII in the that edition, the present item skips, quite naturally, from CLXIX to CLXXIII without any loss of plates. Gabriel Huquier (1695-1772) probably purchased the original 150 plates of Merian's in Amsterdam, sometime in the 1730's, as well as, perhaps, the "18 nouvelles planches" or preparatory drawings for them. Indeed, Huquier's son Jacques-Gabriel published the Recueil [sic] de plantes des Indes ca. 1745 (Hunt 524), suggesting that the elder publisher was already stepping back. No record exists in OCLC of a Huquier edition of Merian's plants and insects of Europe, nor is there any auction record; thus the present item may well be unique, or one of a handful of runs of the plates made by the elder Huquier, perhaps as a teaching-tool for his son. Sophia, Countess of Haddington (née Hope, 1759-1813) was the third daughter of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun and married Charles Hamilton, 8th Earl of Haddington in 1779. Not in Blunt, Hunt, Nissen et al.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Amsterdam, Les Frères Châtelain, puis l'Honoré & Châtelain, 1708-1720. 7 volumes folio (440x280mm), contemporary calf, spines gilt, red edges. Nice condition. Volume 1 second edition, volumes 2-7 first edition. Printed titles in red and black with engraved vignettes, and 283 plates (many large folding) including 100 maps, also views, natural history subjects, elaborate genealogical tables, 4 printed tables in volume 7. Sabin (America), 29141; Koeman II, pp. 33-38 A nice example of this encyclopaedic historical atlas. This atlas was intended for the general public, fascinated in the early eighteenth century by the recently conquered colonies and the new discoveries. Distant countries, such as the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, Mongolia, China, Japan, Indonesia, etc., take an important place in this work. Other sections deal with the history of the european countries, genealogy and heraldry. Volume 6 relates mostly to the Americas and contains a fine dark copy (bound in two large sheets, joined) of the Carte très curieuse de la Mer du Sud, depicting the history of discovery in the western hemisphere from the time of Columbus to the French explorations in North America in the late seventeenth century. In addition to the maps, many of which are based on Guillaume de l'Isle, the plates are after the best travel accounts of the period, such as those of Dapper, Chardin, de Bruyn, Le Hay and other. The atlas was published by L'Honoré & Châtelain in seven volumes in various editions from 1705 to 1739. It was compiled by Mr. C*** (anon.) with 'Dissertations', i.e. compositions of text, maps, plates and chronological and genealogical tables by Mr. Gueudeville, except volume VII where this task was taken over by H.P. Limiers. In each volume, the maps, plates and tables are numbered consecutively. In this set, the volumes are dated 1: 1713; 2 & 3: 1708; 4: 1714; 5 & 6: 1719; 7: 1720.

- Waeber I, 38. Cohen/Ricci 1075. Brunet V, 1546.
