Large 8°, early plain green wrappers (faded). Some soiling on title page. In good to very good condition. Old blue-bordered paper tag on title page with shelfmark ("1358"). 37 pp., (1 l. errata). *** FIRST EDITION; a second appeared in the same year, with only 32 pages. In this pamphlet, part of the Eu e o Clero pamphlet war, the author politely disagrees with Herculano. Herculano responded with Solemnia verba, Cartas ao sr. A.L. Maggessi Tavares, 1850, and shortly thereafter Tavares replied to Herculano with Carta em resposta a outra do sr. A. herculano, que tem por titulo "Solemnia verba," 1850.In volume I of his Historia de Portugal, 1846, Alexandre Herculano called the Battle of Ourique a "pious fraud." Legend had it that D. Afonso saw an apparition of Christ at Ourique in 1139, and that year is traditionally used as the foundation date for the Portuguese monarchy. The clergy and the press attacked Herculano for lacking patriotism and piety. In Eu e o clero, 1850 (addressed to the cardinal-patriarch of Lisbon), Herculano denounced the fanaticism and ignorance of the Portuguese clergy. The controversy this set off continued for some years. Herculano's statements on the Battle of Ourique are today accepted as correct. The author (1806-1877), a native of in Extremoz (in the Alemtejo), was son of General Antonio Tavares Maggessi and himself a captain in the cavalry.*** On the author, see Innocêncio I, 190 (this work not listed); on Eu e o clero, see Innocêncio II, 243-6 (this is nº 10). Couverture souple. Etat : Bon. Edition originale. Références : Le Vay D : The History of Orthopaedics, p. 256-258 : "In 1826, he [Dupuytren] wrote at length on 'original' (i.e. congenital) dislocation of the hip. It was a triumph of clinical and pathological observation, at a time when there were no X-rays and when dislocation in children due to suppuration and in adults due to trauma was common."; Peltier LF : Orthopedics: a history and iconography, pp. 58-60 : "Guillaume Dupuytren was the first to give an extensive report of the pathological changes associated with congenital dislocation of the hip based upon multiple dissections. Dupuytren's report correlated the clinical condition closely with the pathology."; Shapiro F : Pediatric Orthopedic Deformities, pp. 162-163 : "One of the major early clinical descriptions of congenital dislocation of the hip was made by Dupuytren. He clearly defined the entity in terms recognizable today, discussed the possible underlying causes, distinguished it from other abnormalities of the hip, and commented on possible treatment methods. Up until that time it had not been widely recognized as a specific entity, and his work stands as an outstanding contribution to its understanding. He indicated that the disorder involved a transposition of the head of the femur from the acetabulum onto the external wing of the ilium, a transposition that one observed from birth and that appeared to be the result of a defect in the acetabulum, which was not as deep or as complete as normal, rather than being due to trauma or disease." ; Bick EM : Source book of orthopaedics, pp. 376-377 ; Howorth B : Development of present knowledge of congenital displacement of the hip, Clinical orthopaedics and related research, 1977, 125, 68-87. © S.A.S. 4°, much later plain beige wrappers. Very large elaborately decorated woodcut royal arms of Portugal on title page. Elegant eight-line woodcut initial on leaf A2 recto. Paper flaw in upper blank margin of title page. Some browning and spotting. In good condition. (14 ll.). A-C4, D2. *** Second edition? Does not correspond exactly to any of the five variants cited by Paiva. There are at least six editions (some may be different issues) with the same imprint and collation. Most sources do not distinguish between them. First published in 1642, there is an undated edition without place of printing or printer which may or may not take precedence, as well as three editions or issues of 1658, and one of 1672. It was published in Volume XI of Vieira's collected Sermoens, 1696. This sermon is considered one of Vieira's most eloquent and persuasive speeches; he exhorts his audience to follow Saint Anthony's example of piety, charity and courage. Vieira (1608-1697) is described by Boxer as "certainly the most remarkable man in the seventeenth-century Luso-Brazilian world" (A Great Luso-Brazilian Figure: Padre António Vieira, S.J., p. 4). Born in Lisbon, he moved to Bahia as a child and there became a Jesuit novice in 1623. By 1635, when he was ordained, he was already famous as a preacher, and when the Dutch withdrew from Brazil it was he who was chosen to preach the victory sermon. Vieira, a trusted advisor of D. João IV, was sent by him on diplomatic missions to France, Holland and Rome. Beginning in 1652 he spent nine years as a missionary in Maranhão, where he vehemently defended the rights of the Indians against the colonists who wanted to enslave them. As a result, the colonists managed to have him and all the other Jesuits in Pará and Maranhão deported in 1661. Back in Lisbon, his campaign for toleration of the New Christians (crypto-Jews) and his Sebastianist beliefs led to his trial by the Inquisition. He was found guilty, but the ascension of the future D. Pedro II as regent in 1668 led to his release. Vieira?s status as a diplomat and missionary would guarantee his letters a place in Portuguese history, but his style and content are also exceptional: his letters and state-papers are invaluable sources for the period, and his sermons are as readable today as they were in the seventeenth century. Pessoa dubbed him "O Imperador da lingua portuguesa" (quoted in Boxer, ibid., p. 3).*** Paiva, Padre António Vieira, 1608-1697: bibliografia 1077; see 1076 and 1078-40 for elaborate descriptions of the differences between the various editions or issues with the imprint Domingos Lopes Rosa, 1645. Hard Cover. Etat : Good. Its origins and character. 2 Volumes. Volume One: Texts, Volume Two: Plates. Harvard University Press. Cambridge. Massachusetts. 1953. De 31x24 cm. com xiii, 573, [xxviii], xxiv, 334 págs. Encadernação do editor em tela. Ilustrado a p/b em extratexto sob papael couchê no primeiro volume. Segundo volume profusmente ilustrado a p/b sob papel couchê. 31x24 cm. xiii, 573, [xxviii], xxiv, 334 pp. Publisher"s binding in canvas. Illustrated in b/w hors-texte in coated paper in the first volume. Second volume profusely illustrated in b/w in coated paper. 1st Edition. The work draws a historical perspective of the so-called 'Flemish Gothic' from the influence of the Franco-Flemish illumination of the 14th century to the so-called 'International Gothic' of the early 15th century and the importance of independent masters, sculpture and panel painting, the importance of regional schools generally linked to political power and the more or less patronising tendencies of those in power at the time. While not claiming to be a 'dictionary' of Dutch painters, it is devoted in particular only to the works of Hubert and/or Jan van Eyck and Roger van der Weyden. The 'Flemish Gothic' refers to a group of painters, also called 'Flemish primitives', who worked mainly in the 15th and early 16th centuries, at the time of the so-called Northern Renaissance, in cities such as Tournai, Bruges, Ghent and Brussels, in today?s Belgium (areas then dominated by the Duchy of Burgundy and the House of Habsburg). The phase of the 'Flemish primitives' coincided with the height of the Low Countries" influence in northern Europe. As a result, many works were commissioned from northern workshops and sold throughout Europe. Many works were destroyed during the Calvinist iconoclasm on the 16th and 17th centuries. The authorship of others is still a matter of debate until today. This style embodied both the heyday of the Middle Ages and the transition to the Renaissance. It is characterised by the meticulous depiction of nature and complex iconography and symbolism in religious scenes or small portraits. Another innovation of the Flemish painters was the use of oil paint to replace tempera, thus creating a new tradition in painting. Language: Português / Portuguese Location/localizacao: M-1-A-14.

Soft Cover. Etat : Good. Lito Oficina Artistas Reunidos. Porto. Junta Nacional do Vinho. Lisboa. 1959. 102.5x75.5 cm. with 1 sheet of 98x68.5 cm mounted on canvas, held at the head and foot by brown wooden baguettes. Illustrated in colour depicting Portugal mainland and Madeira in green, with people dressed in traditional costumes from each region, traditional boats used to transport wine, motifs relating to wine-growing and to each region, such as clusters of grapes, vineyards, traditional ceramics and architectural monuments. Map of wine regions in Portugal, framed by the title in the various languages, with the word Portugal in red and the other words in green. In the upper left corner it has the coat of arms of Portugal and in the lower right corner a compass rose with a cluster of grapes in the centre. The map identifies the wine regions of Green Wine, Port Wine, Dão, Bucelas, Colares, Carcavelos, Setúbal, and Madeira, as well as some of the most important wine producing locations, such as Bairrada and Terra de Lafões. Copy with light superficial wear on the outer margins and with the title «Wine Regions» handwritten on the back. Very rare. There are no copies catalogued in Porbase, which only registers previous editions, from 1958, in different formats. Beautiful thematic map intended for advertising on international markets. Of great interest to studies on the efforts made during the Estado Novo period to organise and optimise the production and marketing of Portuguese wines. This effort was particularly visible in the creation of dozens of cooperative wineries that still exist today and are a key element of this sector of the national economy. Mário Costa (1902 - 1975) was a lithographer, painter, watercolourist and illustrator specialising in historical themes, who had a richly coloured figurative style. Besides paintings and watercolours for posters, calendars, and books, he illustrated children"s publications such as: O Senhor Doutor, Rim-Tim-Tim, Pim-Pam-Pum, Tic-Tac, O Mosquito, and Faísca. He also drew hundreds of advertisements for Vacuum Oil (later Mobil), between 1937 and 1960. The JNV - Junta Nacional do Vinho (National Wine Board), created by Decree-Law nº. 27 977, of 19 August 1937, succeeded the FVSCP - Federação dos Vinicultores do Centro e Sul de Portugal (Federation of Central and Southern Portuguese Winegrowers), (1933-1937). The main attributions of the JNV were briefly defined as the economic defence of small-scale winegrowing, the regularisation of wine prices, and the improvement of quality. On the issue of regulating wine prices, its action focused on obtaining the average annual price resulting from the balance between supply and outle.

  • 4°, disbound, text block edges rouges, presumably from an early binding. Very large elaborately decorated woodcut royal arms of Portugal on title page. Seven-line rather crude woodcut initial on leaf A2 recto. Light browning. Small marginal wormtrails on a few leaves. Short marginal repair on D1. In good condition. Old ink manuscript foliation ("42-55") in upper outer corner of each leaf recto. (14 ll.). A-C4, D2. *** Second edition? Variant "D". There are at least six editions (some may be different issues) with the same imprint and collation, five of which are cited by Paiva. Most sources do not distinguish between them. First published in 1642, there is an undated edition without place of printing or printer which may or may not take precedence, as well as three editions or issues of 1658, and one of 1672. It was published in Volume XI of Vieira's collected Sermoens, 1696. 3).*** Paiva, Padre António Vieira, 1608-1697: bibliografia 1079; see 1076-8 and 1040 for elaborate descriptions of the differences between the various editions with the imprint Domingos Lopes Rosa, 1645. It includes many scores of the hymns, antiphons, and psalms sang during that solemn occasion. This is a very important source for the history of music in Portugal, for the history of this religious event that is celebrated until today; and for the history of the Order of St. Francis. Pamphlet. 1st Edition. Original black printed portfolio, 8vo. Portfolio of seven large folding maps on on 4 sheets of heavy paper (3 are double sided, 1 is singled sided). Primarily black and white with some color. Text in Polish. Title translates to, "Nazi camps in Poland 1939 - 1945. An Encyclopaedic Reference Book: Maps." Collection of 7 maps, each 84 cm x 60 cm (33 x 24 inches), produced by Jan Laskowski at the Main Commission for the Investigation of Nazi Crimes in Poland. The maps comprise Volume II of the work; Volume I is a heavily illustrated 676-page book of the same title, which we offer separately. The Seven maps (all present) are: - Map 1 [Single Sided]: Hitlerowskie obozy na ziemiach polskich w latach 1939 - 1945. ["Nazi camps in Poland in the years 1939 - 1945"]. Showing: concentration and extermination camps, sub-camps of concentration camps, extermination centers, POW camps, more important sub-camps, working divisions, commandos and temporary POW camps, penal labor camps, major labor camps, prisons, transit camps & ghettos. - Map 2A: Getta na ziemiach polskich w okresie okupacji hitlerowskiej w latach 1939 - 1945 ["Ghettos in Poland during the Nazi occupation in 1939 - 1945"]. - Map 2B: Hitlerowskie obozy przejsciowe na ziemiach polskich w latach 1939 - 1945 ["Nazi transit camps in Poland in 1939-1945"]. - Map 3A: Hitlerowskie wiezienia i areszty na ziemiach polskich w latach 1939 - 1945 ["Nazi prisons and arrests in Poland in 1939 - 1945"]. - Map 3B: Hitlerowskie obozy pracy na ziemiach polskich w latach 1939 - 1945 ["Nazi labor camps in Poland in the years 1939 - 1945"]. - Map 4A: Hitlerowskie obozy jenieckie na ziemiach polskich w latach 1939 - 1945 ["Nazi POW camps in Poland in 1939 - 1945"]. - Map 4B: Hitlerowskie obozy koncentracyjne i osrodki zaglady na ziemiach polskich w latach 1939 - 1945 ["Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers in Poland in 1939 - 1945"]. Maps 2A & 2B have been described as a "Terrifying pair of maps showing the locations of German POW and internment camps in Poland during World War II, highlighting the widespread locations of these establishments. In some parts of the map, the information becomes so dense that three inset maps are shown. This map was designed by Jan Laskowski and printed in 1979 as part of a work on the Nazi extermination machine produced by PWN Warsaw, a state-owned research-focused publishing house in Poland. The map on the front is particularly interesting for its depiction of symbols used to classify internees in German camps. The uppermost of these depictions shows the combinations that can be made for different types of prisoners of different levels of importance. The armbands that would have been worn by these prisoners is shown, as well as the prison uniforms. Other details are also shown. The map lists hundreds of sites run by Nazi operators throughout the country. These include concentration camps, death camps, transitional camps, and ghettos. The map is divided according to Poland's voivodeships, with a key in the lower left. Names of cities too long to spell are also provided in the lower left. This map was produced during a point in Poland's history during which it was actively revisiting the period during the Second World War. Leading social scientists devoted their time to trying to gather all the living as well as the recorded history of the events of the Holocaust and related atrocities before this information vanished. Leading these efforts, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, was the Glówna Komisja Scigania Zbrodni przeciwko Narodowi Polskiemu, known as the Chief Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation. They were active in publishing maps both for domestic educational purposes and for international remembrance and diplomatic efforts regarding the Holocaust. Jan Laskowski was a leading cartographer who produced a number of maps in this field. These maps were produced as part of a series of maps that purported to combine to form an atlas of all of Hitler's crimes in Poland. Many of the large wall maps produced during this period could only show a fraction of the crimes, or only the atrocities committed in one region. Thus, a series of maps was needed to show all the points necessary, which this present work contributes to. Polish Reinterpretations of the Holocaust: Studying the effects of German occupation in Poland is a delicate subject. While it is certain that Poland suffered at least as badly as any other European nation during the Second World War, reinterpretations of the Holocaust in the country have also been used to satisfy nationalistic tendencies. It has become evident to Western observers in the last several years that there is a strong nationalist movement in Poland that seeks to place blame for the Holocaust solely on the shoulders of non-Polish actors, a movement originally fostered under Soviet rule. This movement has gone so far as to limit freedom of speech, criminalizing (with a three-year sentence) the suggestion that Poland or its citizens (in any form) participated in the murders committed by Nazis. As such, the term â Polish concentration camps' has been deemed unacceptable, with the government-approved term being â concentration camps on Polish territory.' All lines of evidence show that this map [2A & 2B] was produced using the most accurate and impartial historical sources. The language on the map is simple, naming only â Hitler's Atrocities,' and there is no evidence of a clear anti-German bias. However, it is impossible to separate this map, one of the most important productions of the remembrance movement during this period, from the social situation in which it was produced. Maps like these can easily be converted into propaganda instruments, and today's Polish leaders, most of whom grew up during Soviet occupation, will have formed their understanding of the Holocaust through maps like these. Soviet Censorship: While the content of the map ap.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. In original case that can be opened with tabs from the sides and top. Foolscap 8vo. (19 x 11 cm). In Chinese and English. [1, 55] p., 1 p. text, 55 p. of colour plates with their descriptive texts on verso. A fine and complete copy. The first and only edition of attractive collection of colour plates and scarce visual ephemera, documenting all minorities and ethnic elements of Socialist China. The album includes 55 men and women who appear happy and healthy, depicted in photos wearing local clothes and hats specific to their regions, all housed in one portfolio. Published by the ?Promote Nationalities College Research Department? in the capital of Socialist China, the album begins with a foreword outlining the theory that all people of various nationalities in the country are more closely united around the Party Central Committee headed by Hua Guofeng (1921-2008). Hua served as Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party and Premier of the People's Republic of China. These ethnic groups are depicted in 55 color photographic plates, each accompanied by bilingual text in Chinese and English on the versos detailing the locations where each group lives in the country and their populations. The groups include the Olunchun, Tajik, Khalkhas, Uighur, Pumi, Kazakh, Kaoshan, Uzbek, Tulung, Tu, Achang, Lopa, Penglung, Yao, Yi, Chiang, Lisu, Tuchia, Ching, Sala, Hani, Tartar, Li, Tai, Tunghsiang, Lahu, Nu, Russian, Owenke, Mongolian, Mulao, Pulang, Paoan, Kelao, Yuku, Korean, She, Chuang, Hoche, Maonan, Monba, Jinuo, Nahsi, Chingpo, Puyi, Wa, Manchu, Miao, Shui, Hui, Tahur, Tung, Pai, Sino, and Tibetan. This attractive and very scarce album, with a distinguished provenance, originates from the collection of Swedish diplomat and Turkologist Gunnar Valfrid Jarring (1907-2002). At the advent of the Republic of China in 1911, the minority issue assumed its real dimension. Founder Sun Yat Sen, aware of the fragility of the new nation-state and disregarding statistical evidence, tried to minimize the influence of the minorities, and emphasized, in his writings and speeches, the demographic supremacy of the Hans. In contrast, the communist regime from its inception in 1949 fully recognized (including religion as a criterion) ethnic minorities. Today, there are 55 minority groups in China, totaling 120 million inhabitants, almost 10% of the population. ?The People?s Republic of China is an integral multi-national socialist country. Apart from the Han nationality, there are more than fifty minority nationalities in China. This album is published in order to give readers a general idea about Chinese minorities. The population of these minorities amonts [sic. amounts] to six percent of the total China?s population, but the areas they inhabit cover fifty to sixty percent of country. They all respectively have a long history and glorious revolutionary traditions. They all have made important contributions to the creation of the Chinese culture, to the construction of the border areas and to the defence of our motherland. After liberation, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, we have abolished the system of national oppression, realized equality and unity among the nationalities and instituted autonomy of the minority areas. As a result, five autonomous regions, twenty-five autonomous prefectures and sixty-nine autonomous counties have been established one after another. The contingent of minority cadres has been growing in strength. Great achievements in economic construction and culture development have been brought about in the minority regions. After the downfall of the ?Gang of Four?, the people of various nationalities are more closely united around the Party Central Committee headed by Comrade Hua Kuofeng and are striving to build our motherland into a strong socialist country with modernizing agriculture, industry, national defence and science and technology.? (Foreword). As of April 2024, only four copies in OCLC world.

In 8º Dim.: 19x13.5 cm. [xii], 396 pps. Binding: Contemporary flexible parchment. Handwritten title on spine and clasps on the lower board. Natural foxing due to the paper which was used. Ownership stamp on title page and ownership signature at the bottom of the title page: ?Ferrão? The first unnumbered pages include: Dedication to His Magesty King Afonso VI, To the Reader, Licences from 1655 to 1658, poems praising the author, which are already included in the first edition, and errata. Second edition. Valuable classic work of the Portuguese literature and an important source for the history of the Portuguese conquests in the Far East, first published in 1634. It was translated into English in 1970. This second edition is the most important of three published until now, since it reflects the last version of the text changed by the author. The poem, which in the first edition had 1250 octaves, in this second edition has 1339, and also includes changes in many verses and the summaries in verse in each ?canto? Knowlton, translator of the English version of this work and a scholar of Portuguese literature and history, published in 1992 a study where he shows that the author has enhanced the baroque characteristics of the poem with these changes. The intent of the author, when publishing this second edition, was to encourage King Afonso VI to retake Malaca, which had been occupied by the Dutch since 1641. Also, according to Knowlton, the author had access to information about the Malaca conquest in 1511, not available from any other source, through memorabilia from his ancestors, who took part in the conquest, kept by his family. Malaca has, till today, a mythical aura (one of the great feats of Afonso de Albuquerque) and a strong connection to Portugal, although it has been occupied by the Dutch and the English. It has a community of Portuguese descendants, with their own language based on ancient Portuguese and with a strong connection to Portugal. Ref.: Edgar C. Knowlton, JR. The First two editions of Malaca Conquistada. Lisboa. 1992 Barbosa Machado 2, 250. H. M. Brackeridge, um afamado escritor, autor do Views of Louisiana (Pittsburgh, 1814), Journal of a Voyage up the River Missouri (Baltimore, 1816), e History of the late war between the U.S. and Great Britain (Baltimore, 1817, com edições posteriores, e uma tradução francesa, de 1820), foi escolhido como secretário da missão. Humboldt afirma que este livro contém extraordinária quantidade de informação, sendo repleto de pontos de vista filosóficos.' 2 volumes of 22x14.5 cm. xviii, [ii], 331, 40 and [iv], 317 p. Contemporary full calf binding, with gilt iron tools and labels on the spines, beautiful marbled endpapers and red sprinkled edges. Boards with walnut root decoration. Copy in excellent condition with luxury binding. Borba de Moraes only describes the Baltimore edition published in the same year. During the years of this trip there was an ongoing the conflict between Portugal and Argentina for the possession of the current territory of Uruguay, a conflict that aroused the interest of North America whose presidents, since independence, began to defend a political thesis that would tend, in the medium term, to declare that North America did not admit interference from European powers throughout America, and subsequently led to the formulation of the Monroe Doctrine, on the 2nd December 1823, creating the foundations of American isolationism and the profound influence of North America throughout the American continent. In 1816, King João VI continuing Portugal s actions to extend the borders of Brazil to the Rio da Prata, had sent to the south the "Division of Royal Volunteers" commanded by General Carlos Frederico Lécor, who managed to take Maldonado and occupy Montevideo in 1817. In the years 1817 and 1818 the Portuguese were confronted with attacks by guerrillas who they could only win in 1820, at the Battle of Taquarembó, on January 22 of that year, and which led to the annexation of the territory by the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil. In 1828, with Brazil already independent of Portugal, and after a war with Argentina, the disputed territory would become independent from Argentina, with the new country - Uruguay, held by the cities and fortresses built by the Portuguese, such as the Colony of the Sacrament. Even today the naturals of this "colony" have the right to Portuguese citizenship. Henry Marie Brackenridge (May 11, 1786 ? January 18, 1871) was an American writer, lawyer, judge, superintendent, and congressman from the state of Pennsylvania. Borba de Morais vol 1, 117. 'In order to obtain reliable information on the political and economic situation of the provinces of the Rio da Prata, the U.S. government decided to send a commission to investigate the matter. H.M. Edition originale. /// A VERY SCARCE, MONUMENTAL and "PRODIGIOUS' WORK" ON NEUROANATOMY (which is "still relevant today" /// Comme l'indiqua Brissaud, "le but de cet ouvrage est essentiellement pratique.

4°, late twentieth-century or early twenty-first-century antique sheep, unsigned but certainly by Império da Conceição Graça, spine richly gilt with raised bands in five compartments, crimson leather lettering piece in second compartment from head with short editor-title lettered gilt, covers with triple gilt ruled borders, text block edges rouged. Title page in red and black, woodcut vignette on *ii, woodcut ornaments scattered throughout. Some browning and foxing, as usual. Overall in very good condition. Long penciled note by the late Portuguese antiquarian bookseller and collector António Tavares de Carvalho on front pastedown. (40 ll.), 363 pp. [p. 191 misnumbered 165]. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of "a Brazilian literary classic" (Borba de Moraes II, 760). According to Wilson Martins, "Os Jubilos da America . estão literariamente na ponta inicial de um arco cuja ponta final será O Uraguai - ambas as obras ligadas à história do nosso estabelecimento territorial e à fisionomia geográfica do Brasil" (História da inteligência brasileira I, 364). As Borba points out (Período colonial, p. 323), it is not only the individual contributors that make this an interesting volume. Jubilos is also the only publication of a Brazilian academy of this period in which we can see how the academy was founded and how it functioned, by reading the dedication, prologue, the letters to Sequeira e Sá, and the program. The work represents, too, a group effort by intellectuals characteristic of their era. Innocêncio believed that almost the entire edition of Jubilos had been sent to Brazil. Borba comments, "Today very few copies exist. Copies in good condition are rare."This volume was mostly the work of the members of the Academia dos Selectos, founded in Rio de Janeiro. The Academia met only once, on 30 January 1752, to offer congratulations to the Brazilian governor, Gomes Freire de Andrada, on his appointment as head of the Portuguese commission to establish the frontier with Spain in southern Brazil. These pieces in Latin, Portuguese and Spanish include the work of more than thirty Brazilian authors (at least nine of them natives of Brazil), most of whom did not publish works elsewhere. Even the editor admitted that the quality of the works was uneven: "Reconheço que nas obras que produzco a nossa Academia, reluz mas o affectuoso que o Poetico." However, they are invaluable for the study of Brazilian prose and verse of this period, and also important as one of the few published products of the eighteenth-century Brazilian academies. The volume is dedicated to Gomes Freire's brother, José Antonio Freire de Andrada, who funded the publication of Jubilos (see preliminary leaves 2-14). Sequeira e Sá, who wrote the dedication, also composed the prologue to the reader, in which he explains how the Academia was formed (preliminary leaves 15-28). Eight leaves of poems dedicated to Sequeira e Sá follow (preliminary leaves 29-36), all written by natives of Brazil who were studying or teaching at Coimbra; none of these authors had any other works published (see Borba, Período colonial, pp. 319-20 for a list of these authors). The last four preliminary leaves include the index of contributors and the licenses. On pp. 1-46 of the text proper are Sequeira e Sá's letter to the members of the Academia and the replies he received. These replies are especially informative, because each is preceded by a paragraph in italics that states the writer's occupation and literary accomplishments. Next (pp. 47-57) is the program of the Academia, listing the subjects from which the contributors are to choose their themes. Finally, on pp. 59-336, are the poems themselves. Aside from the signed works, this section includes unsigned poems by groups of Jesuits (pp. 133-73), Benedictines (pp. 175-84), Franciscans (pp. 185-88) and Carmelites (pp. 189-91). A final section, which Borba suggests was added as an afterthought (see Período colonial, p. 321), contains more poems in honor of Sequeira e Sá and some poems on subjects unrelated to Gomes Freire. The contributors to the volume came from various walks of life. Antonio Nunes de Sequeira and Francisco de Faria were both clergymen. Nunes de Sequeira was born at S. Sebastião (Rio de Janeiro) in 1701, and entered the Church after studying law. Known for his composition of poetry and music, he also served as a choirmaster. His only known surviving works are those printed in this volume: a "Romance Lyrico" (pp. 207-09), three sonnets (pp. 210-12), an epigram (p. 213), and a long "Romance" (pp. 339-42). (See Sacramento Blake I, 272).Francisco de Faria, president of the Academia dos Selectos, contributed two letters (pp. 7-8), an "Oração panegyrico" (pp. 59-88), and a sonnet (p. 130). Faria, born in 1708 at Goiana (Pernambuco), taught at Bahia, but in 1760 was exiled to Lisbon and Rome (see Leite VIII, 216 and Sacramento Blake II, 438-39). His only other published work is the famous Conclusiones metaphysicas de ente reali ., Rio de Janeiro, 1747, one of the only three works printed by Antonio Isidoro da Fonseca at the first printing press established in Brazil. (See Borba I, 303).The Jesuit Simão Pereira de Sá, a native of Rio de Janeiro (b. 1701), was Procurador da Coroa e Fazenda for Rio de Janeiro and also a historian. His history of Colonia do Sacramento had received the licenses for publication when Jubilos appeared (see p. 21), but for some reason was not printed until Capistrano de Abreu published part of it in 1900 (see Borba, Período colonial p. 322). The other works by Pereira de Sá mentioned in the Jubilos were apparently unpublished during the author's lifetime; his only appearance in print was with the two sonnets, the "Romance heroico" and two poems to Sequeira e Sá in Jubilos, pp. 285-90 and 343-46. (See Sacramento Blake VII, 234-35).Antonio Cordeiro da Silva, born at Rio de Janeiro early in the eighteenth century, studied at Coimbra and pursued a military career. By 1752 he was cap.

The controversy between Erasmus and Luther. Erasmus had published a tract 'De libero arbitrio' (On Free Will) in 1524 and Luther published his riposte 'De Servo Arbitrio' (On the bondage of the Will) in 1525. In early 1526, Erasmus replied to this work with the first part of his two-volume 'Hyperaspistes' (The Shield-bearer). In September 1527 the second part of 'Hyperaspistes' appeared, continuing the exegetical controversy with Luther. Erasmus "'now deliberately buttressed his position even more strongly with references to the church fathers. He particularly attacked Luther's allegedly exaggerated position - derived from Paul - that the law brings only the knowledge of sin and thus is not really intended to be fulfilled. While Luther had decided in favor of the Pauline position, Erasmus had smoothed out the controversial points in the biblical tradition with his combination of grace and free will." Brecht, Martin Luther. Shaping and Defining the Reformation. The confrontation between Erasmus and Luther is a duel of major importance for Europe in the first half of the 16th century, because they are two visions of man, of history and of faith which confront each other. This work of the controversy by Erasmus did not had the popular success of that of Luther; it is rare today. Very nice typography of Froben. Very good copy. - -.
