First edition, first impression, in a well-preserved example of the dust jacket, and with a contemporary publisher's advertisement slip loosely inserted. During this period, the book trade viewed jackets as functional pieces of ephemera to be discarded at the point of purchase by customers and booksellers alike. "Collectors before about 1925. often expressed their disdain for the jacket by failing to insist on its presence of by neglecting to preserve it when present" (Tanselle, p. 4). Therefore, when jackets survive, they are often in poor condition. This jacket exemplifies the most typical early 20th-century design, plain and elegant, with advertisements on the front flap and rear panel. "It was this abyss of separation between the English and the Indians which became fertile ground for post-colonial studies when they emerged in the 1970s: was Forster imposing on the Indians the limitations and prejudices of his English imagination, or was he a pioneer in recognizing an independent Indian identity, whether that of the Westernizing Aziz or of the eternal rhythms of the Hindu masses?" (ODNB). Forster began writing the book in 1913, upon his return from his first visit to India (1912-3). Publication was delayed due to the war and in the following years he went on a second trip to the country (working as the private secretary to the Maharajah of Dewas senior) and continued to rework the novel, which eventually appeared in print on 6 June 1924. "Up to the last moment [Forster] had been assailed by doubts and despairs about his novel, but its reception removed all his fears. The book suited the moment, and friends and reviewers alike called it a masterpiece and his finest achievement" (Furbank, p. 123). Kirkpatrick A10a. Philip Nicholas Furbank, E. M. Forster: A Life, 1978; G. Thomas Tanselle, Book-Jackets. Their History, Forms, and Use, 2011. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. With dust jacket. Cloth bright, a little shelfwear at spine ends, small damp stain to lower outer corner of front free endpaper, faint foxing to edges, else clean; jacket spine panel toned, a few nicks and shallow chips at edges, couple of short closed tears discreetly repaired on verso, light vertical crease to front flap, without price as issued: a near-fine copy in the rare jacket, notably well preserved.

Cloth. Etat : Fine. None (illustrateur). First edition. An exceptional first edition of this canonical work of colonial era fiction, presented in an excellent example of the original unclipped dust wrapper. The first edition, first impression, with no further impressions stated. Kirkpatrick A10a. In the scarce original unclipped dust wrapper. Without price, as issued. Dust wrapper has benefited from sympathetic restoration. Due to the functional nature of dust wrappers of the period, survivals of this sought after wrap are scarce, particularly in such presentable condition. With three pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear, including an advertisement for 'A Room With A View'. Based on Forster's experiences in India, A Passage to India explores the racial tensions and prejudices between the Indians and the British during the colonial era. The work sits alongside 'Heart of Darkness' by Joseph Conrad and 'Kim' by Rudyard Kipling as a seminal text in colonial literature. An impressive first edition of one of the greatest works of 20th century literature. In the publisher's cloth binding in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally in excellent condition. Dust wrapper has benefited from restoration, notably to the front of the wrap and joints. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Marginal age toning due to paper used. Fine. book.

First printing. First edition, in the rare original dust jacket, of this acclaimed book set in British colonial India during the rise of the Indian independence movement - often numbered among the greatest novels of the 20th century. A PASSAGE TO INDIA was the product of Forster's longstanding interest in India, intensified by his close friendship with Syed Ross Masood, vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh, and grounded in his own travels through India in 1912 and his 1921 position as private secretary to the Maharajah of Dewas (both later described in THE HILL OF DEVI). The most successful of Forster's novels, it inspired a 1960 Forster-approved play by Santha Rama Rau as well as the 1984 film by David Lean, and was awarded both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Prix Femina Vie Heureuse. A major work on many a collector's list, it is especially sought in the original dust jacket. 7.5'' x 5''. Original red cloth, spine and front board lettered in black. In original (7/6 net) typographic dust jacket. Publisher's ads at rear. 325, [3] pages. Jacket with a few chips to spine ends and corners, fairly toned especially at spine, a few short closed tears and one longer closed tear to front fold. Book a trifle dusty with spine somewhat darkened, leaves toned. Hinges firm. Very good plus in very good minus jacket.

Signed trade editions are exceptionally scarce. "A Passage to India is set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement in the 1920s. It was selected as one of the 100 great works of 20th century English literature by the Modern Library and won the 1924 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. Time magazine included the novel in its "All Time 100 Novels" list.[3] The novel is based on Forster's experiences in India, deriving the title from Walt Whitman's 1870 poem "Passage to India" in Leaves of Grass. It was the basis for the 1984 film directed by David Lean, starring Peggy Ashcroft,

Among the greatest novels of the twentieth century, E. M. Forster s sweeping tale of prejudice and racial tension is set in colonial India at the turn of the century. Forster (1879 1970) was an English fiction writer, essayist, biographer, and travel writer whose most popular novels include A Room with a View, Howards End, and A Passage to India. Before his death in 1970 he was nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature twenty times in fifteen separate years. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 325 pages.

London: Edward Arnold & Co., 1924. 8vo.; publisher's dark red finely-ribbed cloth lettered in black to spine and upper cover, plain edges; pp. [iv], [5]-325 + [iii], publisher's adverts.; rubbed at corners and along spine; sporadic foxing, moreso to the prelims, a little to the outer edge; a very good copy, lacking the very scarce dust jacket. First edition of Forster's famous novel, one of 5000 copies. A Passage to India deals with the complex themes set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement during the 1920s. Despite being controversial on release due to its depictions of relationships between coloniser and colonised, the book went on to win the 1924 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, and in modern days holds an important place in discussions of orientalist and postcolonial literature. Time magazine included the novel in its "All Time 100 Novels" list.
