Handsomely bound in finely woven white linen spine stamped brightly in gold; and in gray paper-covered boards. A near fine copy, crisp and tight, virtually unread. In a complete, near fine, crisp dust jacket with the price of $19.95 at the top of the inside front flap. The front panel features a photo of Jean Paul & Simone. A collectible copy, signed and dated with an inscription by D.D. Ryan to herself. This copy has been ostensibly inscribed in black flair ink by artist Victor Hugo: " Dorinda with warm inspiration, Love Victor 87" across the front endpaper to the late D.D. Ryan of Harper's Bazaar Fashion Fame. However, the inscription is actually written in D.D. Rya's own hand. Didi had a penchant for inscribing books given to her by such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Stephen Sondheim and others to herself as if they were presentations "from them," as in this case. D.D. Ryan (Dorinda Dixon Ryan), was a fashion designer at Harper's Bazaar where she worked with Diana Vreeland and Richard Avedon. Included in Dorinda's circle of friends were: Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Hilary Knight, Kay Thompson, and many others. D.D. was married to John Barry Ryan, III, and the couple is mentioned in Frewin's book "The Late Mrs. Dorothy Parker" on p.305 in a paragraph listing a gathering "of social notables." Simone de Beauvoir s account of the last ten years of Jean-Paul Sartre s life provides a focus for understanding one of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century. But the book, consisting of both a year-by-year account of Sartre s last decade and a conversation between him and de Beauvoir about his life and work, is more than just a philosophical examination. It is also a personal dialogue of astonishing frankness that illuminates one of the most famous and complex relationships of the twentieth century. Stated "First American Edition"at the bottom of the copyright page.
