Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. 1st Edition. 1960. First American Edition, 258pp. Extremities lightly worn, else VG in G, lightly rubbed dj. Paraphrased from the dj: Even as a boy, Thomas Sterling dreamed of following Stanley's way into the Africa of legend, mystery, danger and challenge. In the late 1950's his dream was realized when he traced Stanley's journeys of the 1870's. This book presents two vivid pictures of Africa: as it was in Stanley's time and as it was when the author made his journey into central Africa.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Charles Goslin; (illustrateur). First Edition. 258 pp. Decorated black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; red endpapers; red upper edge; frontis map. Light wear at the corners of the dustjacket with a few small nicks around the edges and some minor rubbing; previous owner's name on the front flap; price clipped. Dustjacket by Charles Goslin. The author traces Henry Morton Stanley's route through darkest Central Africa as he searched for Dr. David Livingstone, weaving the tale of the land as it was in 1871 compared to the land as it was in 1960. Sir Henry Morton Stanley - knighted in 1899 - was born in Wales in 1841. His mother was 18 years old when he was born. He never knew his father, who died shortly after his birth. And his mother abandoned him while he was still a baby. He was raised in workhouse for the poor where he was supposedly raped by the headmaster. As soon as possible, he got out of Britain and headed for the States where, eventually, he became a freelance journalist. It was as a journalist that he searched for Dr. David Livingstone and, upon finding him, uttered his famous line, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." Size: 8vo. Book.
