A Londres, s.é. [Cazin], 1780.

Edition originale
Hardcover. Etat : Near fine. First. First edition "du Régent." [Paris: Quilleau,] 1718. Octavo (6 3/8" x 3 15/16", 162mm x 99mm). [Full collation available.] With an engraved title-page and 29 plates (of 28), of which 13 are folding. Engraved by Benoît Audran after Philippe II d'Orléans. Bound in contemporary red morocco. On the boards, a triple gilt fillet border with gilt corner fleurons. On the spine, five raised bands with gilt fillets. In the panels, a gilt central acorn with scrollwork and fleurons within a double gilt fillet border. Title gilt to the second panel. Gilt strokes to the head- and tail-piece. Gilt fillet to the edges of the boards. Gilt inside dentelle. Marbled end-papers. Hinges strengthened at the head and tail. Some scuffs along the spine. Strips of soiling to the lower edges two pages (A1r and A8v). Otherwise a lovely copy, with the additional final engraving, called "Petits pieds" and titled "Conclusion du Roman". Black gilt leather bookplate of Henri Burton to the front paste-down. Circular ex-libris of Gustave Chancel to the verso of the first free end-paper. Longus (AD IIc), about whom nothing is known, wrote the most widely celebrated of the five surviving Greek novels: Daphnis and Chloe. It typifies the genre of the pastoral novel: the goatherd Daphnis and the shepherdess Chloe, both abandoned at birth, fall in love, undergo various trials separately and are reunited after being recognized by their parents. The translation of Jacques Amyot (1559), printed here, has since its publication been the standard version of the text. It is lyrical and poetic without being overblown. The impetus for the publication was not the 150-year-old translation but the involvement of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans and Regent for his cousin Louis XV from 1715-1723 (the period known as La Régence or Regency). Philippe was a passionate painter and engraver, and had painted a large cycle of illustrations from Daphnis and Chloe. He selected some of them (per his notes in a rather splendid copy described by Brunet) to be engraved and included with the work. The edition is consequently known as "l'édition du Régent." The final engraving -- showing the entwined feet of rutting lovers and consequently known as "Petits pieds" -- found in many but not all examples, was engraved by the Comte de Caylus (1728). Gustave Chancel (1822-1890) is best remembered for his pioneering work on the chemistry of wine, particularly the addition of sulfur as a preservative. He was rector of the Académie de Montpellier. His book-plate is dated to 1876. A laid-in auction description places the volume in a sale by Lardanchet of Lyon (11-12 December 1936, "d'un amateur lyonnais"). It was doubtless purchased by Henri Burton (1896-1968, "a Lyon native who amassed a collection with great taste and discretion over four decades") from whose Sotheby's New York's 11 June 2013 (lot 46) sale the volume was acquired. Brunet III.1157-1158; Cohen-De Ricci 648-651; Ray, French 2.
