Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. First edition. First edition, first printing. A signed copy in the exceedingly rare first state. One of only six advance copies incorrectly bound by the publisher in decorated paper over boards rather than decorated cloth; production was immediately stopped and publication was delayed. The publisher recalled two of the six copies, but the other four apparently circulated before they were recalled. The paper covered boards appear to use the same or very similar paper that was eventually used in the dustwrapper. Additionally this is an association copy, signed by Edward Gorey on the title page and inscribed to Andreas [Brown], longtime owner of the Gotham Book Mart. The Gotham Book Mart was a famous Manhattan bookstore and cultural landmark which was credited for promoting and building the success and career of the Gorey. The store became the commercial flagship of Gorey's works, selling his books, calendars, greeting cards, T-shirts, and other products. It published 15 of Gorey's books and the store gallery hosted exhibitions of his illustrations, as well as public signings by the author. Brown was named as one of the coexecutors of Gorey's estate, after he died in 2000. Near Fine with light toning to spine, light wear to corners, several small cup rings to bottom of front cover, light soiling to bottom textblock edge. In a Near Fine likely supplied (no cup rings) dust jacket. Housed in a custom cloth chemise case. A scarce item and a stopper for collectors of Gorey's oeuvre, not mentioned in the bibliography of his works by Henry Toleando.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. First edition. Fine in pictorial papercovered boards, without dustwrapper. One of six advance copies misbound by the publisher in decorated paper over boards (instead of decorated cloth); production was immediately stopped and publication was delayed. The publisher recalled two of the copies, the other four apparently circulated before they were recalled. The papercovered boards appear to use the same or very similar paper that was eventually used in the dustwrapper. This copy with a 1983 Gotham Book Mart catalogue description laid-in describing the misbinding, and a Gorey-illustrated, Gotham Book Mart bookmark. This issue not noted in *Toledano.* Rare.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. The 1972 signed/limited edition, #32 OF 50 COPIES SIGNED BY EDWARD GOREY at the limitation. This edition calls for "an original ink and water colour drawing by the author", which this copy lacks. Still though, very scarce as such and a lovely copy to boot. Tight and Near Fine in its laminate boards. And in a crisp, price-intact, Near Fine dustjacket, with a tiny chip at the rear panel's top-edge and a miniscule closed tear to the front panel's lower-edge. Quarto, internally immaculate, with no writing or markings of any kind. Also includes a sturdy, VG example (light soiling to the title label and along the rear panel) of the publisher's printed slipcase, which has clearly protected the book and dustjacket very well.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good+. Etat de la jaquette : Poor. First Edition. Dustjacket has blotches and edgewear and a closed tear to lower edge of front panel. It isn't particularly attractive - see image, but it also is covered with a clear, vinyl sleeve. Slight musty smell from storage. ; Signed by the author on the title page to Condor Rogers, noted journalist and editor at the New York Times. "These fifteen titles, published between 1953 and 1965, feature stories told in cross-hatched pictures and (mostly) rhyming couplets, generously spaced in this hardcover book. In this collection the panels of these books are rearranged to fill both sides of a much larger spread, which gives the stories a slightly different feel."
