Endpapers renewed, (19th-century). , This is a compilation of various articles from issues of ?The Gentlemen?s Magazine? since its inception in 1731.With the floral bookplate of Augustine Birrell on the paste-down front endpapers. Birrell was the Chief Secretary for Ireland between 1907 and 1916, an English-born politician, barrister, academic and author. He successfully split the Royal University of Ireland into two separate universities in 1907?the National University of Ireland and Queen?s University Belfast?which allowed the Protestant and Catholic churches to have separate spheres. However, the biggest political enterprise of his tenure was the Home Rule bill, in which he defended the right of the Irish to rule all of Ireland, opposing the partitioning of Northern Ireland.
