Fazal Ahmad Khan (19102009) was a renowned Pakistani archaeologist who served as a Director General of the Department of Archaeology & Museums (DOAM) from 1958 to 1970. He was a student of esteemed archaeologist Mortimer Wheeler. Khan received his early education in Punjab, followed by MA degrees in History and Geography from Aligarh Muslim University in 1935 and 1938, respectively. Khan joined the Archaeological Survey of India as a Field Scholar for Exploration and Excavation in October 1938. The Government of Pakistan awarded him a scholarship to pursue higher education in England in 1951, where he completed his Ph.D. in a record time of two years and four months under the supervision of Max Mallowan and V. Gordon Childe at the Institute of Archaeology, University of London. Khan was appointed Superintendent of the Exploration and Excavation Branch, conducting archaeological excavations at the Arab archaeological site of Banbhore in Sindh and the Buddhist archaeological site of Mainmati in East Pakistan. In April 1958, he became Director of the Department of Archaeology, Pakistan, serving until his retirement in 1970. In 1959, as Director of the Department of Archaeology, he wrote the 'Note on a New National Museum of Pakistan' which outlined a plan for the reorganization of the National Museum of Pakistan in Karachi. In recent past there have been discoveries both prehistoric and historic in Pakistan. Although the results of these archaeological finds are known to the scholars and experts, yet the public interest has, probably for want of proper presentation, remained mainly indifferent. This volume presents a panoramic view of Pakistan's fascinating past, dealing mainly with the prehistoric, protohistoric, Buddhist and the Hindu periods in a readable form. It places before the reader a brief but a clear vision of historic continuity for more than five thousand years and traces human activity as far back as half-a-million years. The saga of olden civilizations has been skillfully narrated and illustrated to provide a dimension for visual comprehension. Here the cultural, social and artistic movements of one of the most ancient civilizations are woven together in the broad framework of history. An important feature of the book is the new interpretation of the origin and development of the Gandhara art deviating completely from the traditional point of view. First Published [stated]. Presumed first printing.
