Etat : Near Fine. First Edition. An advance uncorrected proof of the first edition. Bound in publisher's drab printed wraps, with review slip (formerly stapled to front cover) laid in. Foxing mostly to front wrap and textblock edge. Small pencil notation to first blank, with light pencil markings on corresponding pages. Bottom corners lightly bumped. An extremely scarce format of Plath's second second published book of poetry and one of her best-known works. It was published posthumously under the meddling watch of her widow Ted Hughes, who rearranged the order of the poems and replaced twelve Sylvia had selected with ones written slightly later.

First edition. Original red cloth with gilt titles in dustwrapper. Presentation copy, from the author's husband and editor. Inscribed on the front endpaper for his uncle Thomas Farrar, "To Tom - Sorry about the cover-stains - it's drip from the thatch, not careless coffee. Ted". A near fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper. Both book and dustwrapper are fresh and clean, aside from the thatch drip Hughes mentions in the inscription. This chiefly effects the spine and lower panel of the dustwrapper and the bottom edge of text block. A family presentation copy of one of the most significant collections of post war poetry. The poems were written in the last months of Plath's life, but not published until two years after her death, collected and edited by the her husband Ted Hughes.

Etat : Near fine. First edition. Uncorrected proof of Sylvia Plath's iconic second book of poetry, published two years after her death - a dark and personal collection. ARIEL - largely penned during a sharp uptick in productivity after her separation from Ted Hughes - crystalizes Plath's struggles with mental illness, depression, and abuse. Her vivid use of imagery heightens the confessional nature of the poems, sometimes twisting into the surreal and horrific. "ARIEL is not easy poetry to criticize. It is not much like any other poetry. It is her," noted the POETRY BOOK SOCIETY, who named it their Spring Choice of that year. A very uncommon format of one of the defining volumes of 20th century verse. 8.5'' x 5.25''. Original publisher's beige printed wrappers. 86 pages. Minor toning to extremities. Faint soil here and there. Some production creasing to spine. Else clean and sound.

One of the most significant collections of post war poetry, written in the last months of the author's life and edited by Plath's husband, Ted Hughes. First edition, first impression, of the author's first posthumous poetry collection, her second overall, published two years after her suicide. Plath believed her Ariel poems to be the best she had produced and accurately predicted to her mother that "they will make my name" (Letters, p. 468). The collection was edited by Ted Hughes, who slightly altered Plath's ordering of the poems, omitted 13 pieces, and added another ten. According to Frieda Hughes, her father "wished to give the book a broader perspective in order to make it more acceptable to readers, rather than alienate them" (Ariel: The Restored Edition, 2007, p. xvi). While Ted Hughes's decisions have been the subject of criticism, he was successful in creating out of Ariel Plath's most enduring poetry book, the one which first gained her significant literary recognition and precipitated her rise to fame among scholars and cult followers alike. Tabor A5a. Sylvia Plath, Letters Home: Correspondence, 1950-1963, 1975. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Ownership inscription on front free endpaper. A little edge rubbing, else fresh; sharp jacket with hint of sunning to spine, unclipped: a near-fine copy in fine jacket.

First edition, first impression, the poet Gavin Ewart's copy, with his ownership inscription on the front free endpaper. This is Plath's first posthumous poetry collection, her second overall, published two years after her death. Ewart (1916-1995), a Cambridge alumni like Plath, contributed to Grigson's New Verse at the age of 17 and, after an early blaze, served in the Second World War, and fell silent for over 20 years. He rejoined the literary circuit in 1964, one year prior to the publication Ariel, and it was "partly through the inspiration of meeting some younger fellow poets. that Ewart began to write again, and with new vigour" (Thwaite). Within the next quarter-century, Ewart published "over a dozen substantial new books of poetry, along with many small pamphlets, and was editor of half a dozen anthologies" (ibid.) Tabor A5a. Sylvia Plath, Letters Home: Correspondence, 1950-1963, 1975; Anthony Thwaite, "Obituary: Gavin Ewart", The Independent, 24 Oct. 1995. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. A bright, square copy, a few marks to spine, tiny crease to outer margin of first 13 pages, else fine, in the fresh jacket, spine panel sunned with a few nicks and creases to ends, tips lightly rubbed, else sharp.
