Livre
Hardcover. Etat : New. A beautifully produced monograph devoted to the paintings and drawings of John Altoon, a central figure in the Los Angeles art scene of the 1950s and 1960s. Haunting and erotic, Altoon's colorful paintings and intimate drawings capture a magical moment in postwar California, between the Beat Generation and the sexual and psychedelic revolution of the late sixties. His larger-than-life personality and enthusiasm energized the circle of artists associated with the Ferus Gallery, a nexus of L.A. avant-gardism that included such still influential figures as Ed Keinholtz, Robert Irwin, Ed Moses, Larry Bell, and Ed Ruscha. A boisterous, hard-living man, in love with the ladies, Altoon was plagued by bouts of depression alternating with episodes of mania that sometimes turned destructive. He died young, at the age of 43, from a massive heart attack, and his funeral is said to have included the largest number of Los Angeles artists ever to gather in one spot. This unique, oversized presentation includes reproduced sketchbooks; moving personal essays by major figures including poet Robert Creeley and pioneering West Coast curator Walter Hopps; photographs of Altoon in his Venice studio; a booklet of letters to Altoon; and over 50 works of art. BEAUTIFUL COPY!!!.

Livre Edition originale
Illustrated Boards. Etat : As New. First Edition. 224pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Kyle Lamar. With a biography, exhibition history and collections listing. Published to coincide with a 2014 retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, "The Astonishing Works of John Altoon" surveys the colorful paintings and virtuosic drawings of this larger-than-life personality exhibited at New York's Nyehaus in 2013. Altoon's art is intimate, haunting, and erotic - capturing a magical moment in California art between the Beat Generation and the sexual and psychedelic revolutions. The work is put in context through essays and remembrances from those who knew him best: the poet Robert Creeley; psychiatrist and fan Dr. Milton Wexler; pioneering West Coast curator Walter Hopps; and curator, gallerist, and critic Klaus Kertess. This lavishly produced original collection also features a juxtaposition of Altoon's lithographs with a selection of Creeley's poems that the longtime friends originally published as "About Women" in 1965, a facsimile of his Ed Kienholz-published memorial exhibition catalog, and posthumously addressed letters from friends. A brand new, pristine example of this exquisite document. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Artist Monograph.
