Half-Leather. Etat : Very Good-. First Edition. Plates and portraits all present. Spine edges and bands rubbed. The biggest defect is the splitting of the spine hinges to the bottom 6" leaving the spine sticking out. There is also a 1" tear at top of rear spine hinge. Wear to all extremities with some bumps to edges with a particularly heavy bump a third of the way up on the fore edge of the rear board. Rubbing at places to the marbled boards and also to the corner pieces. Fore and bottom edges of text block untrimmed. Internally the hinges are petty solid although the bottom of each board is a bit shaky because of the loss of support from the spine where the leather has separated. Small stain at top of inner front hinge, armorial bookplates on both fixed end papers (the rear one upside down for some reason) and a small stain at top of title page that carries on for a few leaves (to the preface) but it is all pretty minor (see images). All the significant problems are on the binding and could be repaired quite easily. I've left it as it is because some people have their own preferences with repairs but I can get it done if you want the book repaired, POA. A very heavy book that will incur extra postage. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel. N.B. Postage to the USA will often be quite a bit less than the quote on ABE.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. Oversized hardcover. Heavy boards, with blue cloth and blindstamped decorations. Golden pegasus on the front cover, gold lettering on the spine. Spine is faded a shade darker than the boards. Some tattering to crown and foot of spine, corners bumped. Dark maroon endpapers, cracked at the gutter, but boards still firmly attached by thick cords. Bookplate on inside front cover with Balloonist image and the name Charles W. Berry and his London address. After the front endpaper, there are 5 separate clippings from booksellers catalogues (from the 1920s and 1930s) advertising copies of this book. Title page printed in black and red. Dated 1864. Full page engraved frontispiece. The first two page have some repair work to the tattered edges. Xxiii + 530 pages. Frontismatter includes list of subscribers. A history of flight, from mythology through various lighter-than-air airships (but I see no mention of fixed-wing or motorized flight). Illustrated with photozinographs (dozens and dozens of them). Photozinographs were a short lived form of reproducing images in which a photographic negative was applied to a sheet of zinc (rather than lithographic stone) to make a plate from which to print. It was quickly supplanted by better methods. All the plates in this volume are dated 1864 at the bottom. Some mild foxing throughout. Quite heavy. This is an oversized book, so additional shipping will be needed for international or priority shipping, and perhaps even for media shipping in the US. Please email with questions or to request photos. If there is a photo beside this listing, please note that it was placed there by ABE without our permission and is likely what they call a stock photo (whatever that is). This volume is part of a large collection of Aviation and Ballooning books, a catalogue of which is available upon request. Most of the volumes have a small pencil notation on the first blank page - the letters KB and a number. Many have Evelyn Kendall s signature as well.

THE COPY GIVEN BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS MOTHER, THE DEDICATEE OF THE BOOK, WITH HIS PERSONAL THOUGHTS ABOUT WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, PUFFERY AND CHARITY NOTED IN THE PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION AS WELL AS A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS OF THE CREATION AND PRODUCTION OF THE BOOK. Hatton Turnor's work covers and offers a vast survey of aeronautics and the literature available up until the time of the publication of his own work. The author gives a fine preface to the work in which he notes that his is the first great English publication devoted to the panorama of aeronautics. Chapters included are devoted to a study of the development of aeronautics from ancient times to the present, to the ascents made from 1800 until 1864, to the subject of balloons used during war time, to aerostats, to the physical experience of ballooning in calm and storm, to a caricature of the science itself, and to a survey and consideration of the future of aeronautics. The work is superbly illustrated throughout including the chromolithograph and original photograph at the front and the 40 additional full-page plates produced on heavy stock.
