Martineau wrote her autobiography in 1855 and according to the British Library catalogue, Volumes I-II were printed at Windermere in 1857. Volume III comprises Chapman's Memorials. The work includes sketches of leading contemporary political and literary figures including Lord Brougham, Malthus, Babbage, Darwin, Carlyle, Coleridge, Godwin, and Owen, as well as chapters relating to Martineau's visit to America, 1834-36. "Harriet Martineau is famous chiefly as a popularizer of economics. In [her works] she attempted to embody in stories and fables the leading doctrines of Malthus and Ricardo. In 1834 [she] went for a two years' visit to America, where she incurred great unpopularity by her open support of abolitionism. Her opposition to slavery led her to question the laissez faire assumptions upon which her economics had been based, and in [her autobiography] she gave expression to utopian views regarding the prospects of social reconstruction."
