Hardcover. Etat : g. Third edition. Small folio. VII, [1], 1011, [5]pp. Full dark brown-stamped morocco with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Dentelles. All edges gilt. Silk textured endpapers. Engraved half title. Frontispiece portrait of Moses protected with a tissue guard. This work marks a major milestone in scripture translation as it is the first complete translation of the Bible by a Jew. Indeed, in the early 19th century, most American Jews couldn't read the Bible because they were not literate in Hebrew and an adequate English translation didn't exist. Isaac Leeser's "The Twenty-Four Books of the Holy Scriptures," first published in 1854, attempted to fill this need. Soon after its publication, this work became the standard for American Jews not conversant in Hebrew as well as an important contribution to Jewish American culture. Leeser spent 17 years on this landmark translation, relying almost exclusively on Jewish scholarship. This rare third edition is a large-size illustrated version that was sold door-to-door. It contains 9 tissue-guarded steel engravings from celebrated paintings, including: Philippe de Champagne's "Moses Presenting the Tablets of the Law" (Frontispiece); J. Clark's "Hagar and Ishmael"; Dobson's "Happy Days of Job" and 13 photomechanical reproductions of illustrations by Gustave Doré. Includes four blank leaves for the recording the rite of holy matrimony, marriages, births, and deaths at rear. Some age wear on binding with edges rubbed and front cover stained. Front board starting. Back board darkened and slightly scratched. Offsetting along edges of endpapers. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+ to very good condition.

"In the 1870s, The Doré Bible was perhaps the most treasured (and expensive) book in the world" (Malan, 81). Certainly, it proved a milestone in Doré's career. Doré's illustrations for the Bible (first published in French in 1866) were a great success, and in 1867 Doré had a major exhibition of his work in London which led to the founding of Doré Gallery in Bond Street, London. Doré's "Bible was enthusiastically sponsored by one of the greatest French publishers of illustrated books of the day, Mame of Tours Its original reception was truly remarkable A second edition of the Bible was called for almost at once Editions appeared in almost every European country One of the first off the mark was an English edition from Cassell, Petter and Galpin, 1867. This caused an even greater sensation than the French edition, and the demand among collectors for any and everything by Doré was clamorous" (Muir, 224). (Herbert, 1977).

A tipped-in slip at the front of the first volume reads "The Doré Bible / Edition De Luxe / Special Issue of 485 Copies of which / this is No. 260 / Waverly Book Co. Ltd., Vulcan House, Ludgate Hill, London." The Doré Bible was first published in France at the end of 1865 (dated 1866). Cassell first announced the Doré Bible in November of 1865, and they also announced an English 'parts' edition on January 1, 1866, the first part of which appeared in March of that year. The parts issue wasn't completed until 1870 but such was the demand that in December of 1867 the full text went on sale in both London and New York (dated 1868). These were issued with the imprint Cassell, Petter & Galpin. This present version, with Melbourne added to the imprint Cassell and Company, could not have been issued until at least 1886. With its earlier brethren, this is the only version of the Doré Bible to contain all 238 plates. In all, the Doré Bible was published in at least 234 languages, including Esperanto. It ran to hundreds of editions and was one of the most popular books on the 19th century. See Malan, Gustave Doré, Adrift on Dreams of Splendor (1995), pp. 81-91, and 239-41, who makes no mention of this Edition De Luxe limited to 485 copies. No mention of this limited deluxe edition in OCLC either.

Light rubbing to binding with some minor losses of leather, corners bruised, contents clean save for the odd occasional spot, generally a very good set. "Ouvrage capital et remarquable par son illustration: Doré était dans toute la maîtrise de son art" (Carteret). One of the great monuments of French illustrated book production in the 19th century. Doré's illustrations are renowned. Celebrated for their composition and finesse, they metamorphosed in larger format into dioramas and even are seen as having influenced early cinema, such as Cecil B. de Mille's Samson and Dalila. They required a large team - the leaf of 'Noms des coopérateurs' at end of vol. 2 names 27 engravers - to produce the wood-engravings from his original drawings. The text is presented in double column, the letterpress separated by central elaborate woodcut columns by H. Giacomelli. (Carteret III, 89-90.).

(in Carteret). The illustrations are by Gustave Dorà [1832 - 1883], a largely self-taught prodigy who began illustrating professionally at age 16. At the time of his death in 1883, Dorà was the most widely published illustrator in history. His most famous works include illustrations for John Milton's Paradise Lost, Dante's Inferno, and Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven. But Dorà 's Bible illustrations were, and still are, his most popular. Even art critics of the day responded positively. One such critic said, 'Dorà has illustrated the Holy Bible, and the drawings are some of the most wonderful that have ever been executed by any artist, in any age.' The commercial success of this Bible was followed by the opening of the Dorà Gallery in London, which remained open for the rest of his life. Dorà 's popular success with the Bible, along with other well-loved works, solidified his singular legacy in the history of Western art." - Museum of the Bible. Not in Darlow and Moule.
