First American Edition. Quarto. 224pp., The author gives insight into the difficulties faced by warship designers in an age of rapid technological change, and sets out the valid strategic and technical reasons that lay behind such seemingly reactionary policies as the fitting of sails in cruising ironclads, and the Navy's retention of muzzle-loading guns well into the 1880s. Illustrated with photographic images and reproductions of building plans. Bound in maroon cloth, spine lettering gilt. A fine copy in fine pictorial dust jacket.

Hard cover dust wrapper, wide quarto, 224pp, b&w illustrations/plans/diagrams. Light wear to edges of dw/boards, previous owner details top right of front fep; a very good copy. Looks at British capital warship design and development during the period seen as its Dark Ages - embodied by technological conservatism and an apparent lack of any design policy, producing a confusing mix of ship types with amrmament and machinery being outmoded before ships were completed. This book refutes that Dark Ages view, revealing the full range of strategic, logistic and administrative factors which influenced warship development. Further argues that warship design and development during this period sowed the seeds of the modern battleship.
