Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. 292 pages. This is an attractive copy of de Beauvoir's first novel, in a dust jacket that is quite satisfactory. Publisher's binding sturdy and fresh, minor bumping to head and foot of spine; contents fine. The unclipped dust jacket ($3.00) is rubbed at its edges, with a one-half inch open tear to its front panel and a one-inch open tear and sunning at its rear panel, but is otherwise sound. A short cancellation (probably by the publisher) follows the name "Jean Paul Sartre" at the rear panel of the dust jacket. 420 grams.

Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. A splendid 1st US Edition of this WW II classic from the French Existentialist. " Beauvoir began writing The Blood of Others in 1941, and it was 'essentially finished' by May 1943. Beauvoir wrote it in the Caf? de Flore in Paris, arriving at 8am each morning, because the caf? was heated while the hotel in which she lived was not. Beauvoir used some of her own experiences for the novel. H?l?ne's fleeing from Paris as the Germans advanced is based on Beauvoir's own actions - in June 1940 she travelled with friends by car to Laval and then by coach to Angers. Blomart's reaction to the death of the baby son of his family's maid (chapter 1) is based on Beauvoir's own experience of the same as a young woman. "The story of Madeleine volunteering to help in the Spanish civil War and injuring her foot by spilling hot water over it is based on a similar event that occurred to writer Simone Weil. According to another source, much of H?l?ne's behaviour is based on that of Nathalie Sorokine, a pupil and friend of Beauvoir's and to whom The Blood of Others is dedicated." Orange cloth. Square tight binding. Clean interior, save for a small previous bookseller price in ink to top of front endpaper. Dust jacket with mild rubbing, light soiling and edge wear. Former small bookseller price in ink at top of front-inner flap. Presents handsomely in archival mylar.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Fair. 1st Edition. The First English-language edition of de Beauvoir's celebrated existential novel of the French Resistance, written between 1941-43 and originally published by Gallimard in 1945, three year before this English translation. 8vo. 228pp. Red cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine. The tip of one corner knocked, and with several tiny slivers of fading to the cloth at the upper margins. Free endpapers spotted and lightly toned. A very good copy in the Victor Reinganum designed surrealist dust wrapper, which is non-price-clipped but somewhat nicked, chipped, torn and edgeworn. Uncommon, and much more so with the dust wrapper albeit this is perhaps not the nicest example.
