Etat : Fair. 400 pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. Pages are clean and bright with a firm binding. Endpapers and page edges are lightly tanned and foxed. Boards have been moderately rub worn. Noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed Spine ends are crushed, with noticeable splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

There is light foxing to endpapers. Very Good condition. There are 208 pages, with nearly 200 illustrations. There is a coloured frontispiece protected with tissue guard together with six other full page coloured illustrations. There are thirteen Maps and Plans and a small attached printed piece of paper stating -'This book was supplied by John King & Son of 12 Albert Street, Manchester, being specially prepared for subscription, this Edition is not obtainable through the general Booksellers'.

It was originally issued as a Special Edition for subscribers and not sold in bookstores. This three volumes were part of an original 6 volume set: each volume was issued in two bound parts or "sections." These three volumes are all bound in the original green publisher's cloth covers with gilt spine lettering and decorations. All edges are gilt. Note: this set does not contain section 1 for the 3 volumes. There are many plates and illustrations, both in black & white and color, that accompany the text. This edition specially was prepared for subscribers; no date is evident in any of these volumes, but apparantly about 1904. Light foxing to end papers, but no foxing to internal pages. Front inner hinge of volume 3 partially cracked. This is a nice clean, tight and unmarked set with no interior or exterior markings, no owner names and no bookplates; just a little minor shelf wear. Pagination: v. I, 209 - 416 pp.; v. II 211- 409 pp.; v. III , 127 - 404 pp. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall.
