An about very good copy in black cloth boards with some faint evidence of moisture to the rear board and the vintage former owner signature of New York City gallerist to the front free endpaper and in a fair only dust jacket that is largely split at the spine and with some large chips, tears and stains to the verso as well. First edition; small 4to (215 x 174 mm, 8½ x 6¾ in); black and white photographs printed in halftone, foxing to preliminary pages and edges; black cloth-covered boards, spine and upper side stamped in white, black-and-white photo-illustrated dust-jacket, text in grey and white, worn and price-clipped, errata slip tipped in; [xiv], 178pp. Walker Evans produced this remarkable series of clandestine portraits of passengers on the New York City subway between 1938 and 1941. He caught his subjects off guard by strapping a 35mm Contax camera to his chest, with the lens protruding out between two buttons of his overcoat. He operated the shutter with a cable running down the length of his sleeve. He was initially accompanied by fellow photographer Helen Levitt, who acted as both companion and distractor when the need arose. Boards in Pictorial Jacket. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. First Edition. xii + 178pp, 89 b&w illustrations. Published in 1966, this hardbound monograph collected in book form for the first time Walker Evans' poignant black and white portraits of New York City subway riders taken during the thirties and forties. An otherwise internally bright, most handsome example of the uncommon Houghton Mifflin Company and Riverside Press first hardcover edition (cited on page 253 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 218-219 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 31 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 104-109 of Horacio Fernandez' "New York in Photobooks") showing some minor staining and the name of a previous owner in ink on the front pastedown. The embossed white lettering on the front board and spine is still strong and crisp, while the black covers show a few trivial traces of water droplets in raking light along with a minor scratch on the rear board. Its fragile dust jacket is present, though noticeably creased, chipped, and torn - with some paper loss. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Photography Monograph.
