Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. First Edition; First Printing. xv, 241; 203 plates pages; Publisher's black cloth, beveled edges to the covers, red label on spine, lettered in gilt, terra cotto endpapers. Red pictorial dust jacket, lettered in white. A fine copy, in a fine dust jacket. Clean and unworn; this copy has no slipcase. First edition of the first part of the Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard -- handsomely printed and bound in Belgium on coated paper. Antwerp's Jesuit Church, renamed Carolus Borromeuskerk after rebuilding in the eighteenth century, was formerly known for 39 ceiling pieces by Rubens that were lost in a fire when the church was struck by lightning on July 18, 1718. The pair of alterpieces from 1618 and the thirty-nine ceiling paintings which Rubens painted in 1620-1621 for the newly-built Jesuit Church constituted the most extensive commission he had received up to that time. While they were destroyed in the 1718 fire, many of Rubens s remarkable grisaille sketches and his final oil sketches for the canvas paintings have survived. An important part of this detailed work of scholarship is the critical catalogue of the surviving sketches by Rubens. A heavy and large volume, which will require extra shipping charges for either priority or international destinations.
