No Binding. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. First English language edition. Loose sheets housed in a clamshell cardboard box of black and orange with titles to front. Sheets are fine; in a fine box designed by Janet Halverson. A vintage copy of an unusual, experimental book by French writer Marc Saporta (1923-2009). Consists of 150 loose pages that the reader is encouraged to arrange and read in any way they choose. Each page has a self-contained narrative. What makes this even more interesting is that this actually works. As Saporta himself explained, "the time and order of events control a man's life more than the nature of these events." Very scarce, especially in this superior condition. 150 loose pages, (4-7/8" by 7-3/4") each.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Innovative novel-in-a-box with 152 unbound, unnumbered pages intended to be read in non-linear order ("the reader is requested to shuffle them like a deck of cards") laid into a tricolor-printed paper-covered box designed by Janet Halverson, who at the time also designed the cover of Jack Kerouc's 1962 novel Big Sur. Influenced by abstract expressionist painting, William Burrough's "Naked Lunch", and musical work by John Cage, "Composition No. 1" anticipated subsequent experiments in open form writing. As reviewer David Dietrich put it in 2011 "In so many ways, Composition No. 1 was published ahead of its time: the book raises all the questions we ask ourselves today about user-centric, non-linear screen driven ways of reading." First English language edition, first printing, translated from the original French by edition of 1962 by Richard Howard and published by Simon and Schuster in 1963. 8vo; with original orange band around the loose text block. Mild foxing to fore edge, otherwise clean and bright leaves with only light creasing to title page. Intact box; some de-lamination occurring, particularly along spine. Soiling and chipping to box with faint damp staining. Slightly raised top edge. All pages accounted for.
Unbound. Etat : As New. None (illustrateur). First edition. The first Visual edition of this novel influenced by abstract impressionist painting, an unbound novel housed in its original box and protected in the publisher's shrink wrap. An innovative novel published in unbound leaves homes in its original clamshell box, intended to be rear in any order. The first Visual edition reissued from the 1963 first edition, still in its protective shrink wrap.A publication ahead of its time, it comprises an interconnected collection of stories following a group of Parisians during the Second World War German occupation. The way the book is thought of challenges both our notions of what a book is and the way we read it, dealing with questions still relevant today, concerning user-centric, non-linear screen driven ways of reading. Pinted with much attention to design, with unnumbered leaves and a digitally-generated art work to the rear of each leaf. Unbound as issued, in the original publisher's clamshell box. Lovely, protected in the unopened, original publisher's shrink wrap. As New. book.
