Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : New. In his work on rings of operators in Hilbert space, John von Neumann discovered a new mathematical structure that resembled the lattice system Ln. In characterizing its properties, von Neumann founded the field of continuous geometry. This book, based on von Neumann's lecture notes, begins with the development of the axioms of continuous geometry, dimension theory, and--for the irreducible case--the function D(a). The properties of regular rings are then discussed, and a variety of results are presented for lattices that are continuous geometries, for which irreducibility is not assumed. For students and researchers interested in ring theory or projective geometries, this book is required reading.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very good. First edition. This copy, the scarce Oxford Press imprint in green oxford cloth, and very good, unclipped orange jacket, barely sunned on the spine. A handsome collector's copy. Von Neumann was generally regarded as the foremost mathematician of his time[2] and said to be "the last representative of the great mathematicians". Von Neumann founded the field of continuous geometry.[75] It followed his path-breaking work on rings of operators. In mathematics, continuous geometry is a substitute of complex projective geometry. kHe was a pioneer of the application of operator theory to quantum mechanics in the development of functional analysis, and a key figure in the development of game theory and the concepts of cellular automata, the universal constructor and the digital computer.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition of these notes capturing von Neumann's thought as he developed his major contributions to lattice theory: his concepts of a "continuous geometry" and a "regular ring". Von Neumann, a founding member of the Institute for Advanced Study, delivered these lectures in the spring of 1936: they were recorded by Dr L. Roy Wilcox (1912-1999), who had just obtained his doctorate in mathematics from Chicago. Von Neumann regarded Wilcox's notes highly enough to make efforts to publish them: his other work intervened but they did eventually appear, posthumously, in the Continuous Geometry volume of 1960. Quarto (276 x 216 mm). Together, 76 mimeographed leaves, extensive formulae in the text. Original yellow quarter buckram, light grey stiff paper covers. Light bumping, faint sunning to spine, contents crisp and fresh: a very good copy indeed.

Seidenberg wrote his thesis, Valuation Ideals in Rings of Polynomials in Two Variables, under the direction of leading algebraic geometers and mathematician Oskar Zariski. Very Good. Tape at spine ends is worn and fraying, some corner wear, spotting to bottom textblock edge. Seidenberg has made several mathematical notations in pencil and noted errors in the text. Consists of notes taken by L. Roy Wilcox on lectures given by the famous polymath John von Neumann during 1935-36. There was a later volume of notes from 1936-37.
